Recycling.. Aibu

I went to our local, rural, recycling centre today as the Pyrex plate in my microwave has broken and I was hoping to pick up another one instead of ordering one off amazon. There were plenty of clean new looking appliances - I even had a look in a couple of fridges as I could do with a new shelf for mine. People have used the recycling centre for years like this, leaving unwanted stuff boxed up for others to take if they want! I was told by the man in charge they have a policy of 'strictly no scavenging' and nothing was allowed to leave the recycling centre as it is all under contract and if I were to take a Pyrex plate out of a microwave then they would be breaking the contract Hmm. This seems like complete madness to me in this day and age, what do you think?

YANBU
speak to your local councillor
this may indeed be the policy but it's a mad one and needs questioning

Isn't this standard..? You can't take anything away from recycling centres round these parts. The council sell any good stuff.

BarbaraofSeville · 08/01/2020 11:52

That's mad. I don't think pyrex is recyclable anyway. I'd probably email the recycling centre manager/council and remind them that it's reduce, reuse and then recycle, so you were doing the right thing by looking to reuse a plate from an unwanted microwave, rather than buying a new one.

I never thought of trying to do this. I've lived with a broken shelf in my freezer for years, because a ham fisted friend broke a little plastic clip years ago and I didn't want to pay something stupid like £8 for a new one.

It seemed like a lot of money at the time, but if I'd known that the bloody fridge won't ever die it was going to last this long, I would have splashed out.

If you mean waste management centre, as in council run tips, then that's always been the case where I am.

zasknbg · 08/01/2020 11:54

I have put YABU because most of these places are 100% strict with the no scavenging policies.

It does seem a shame and it is madness. Most council places like this are run by private companies and they will have won the contract on price. They have a set of rules and enforce them all. Unsure what they were going to do with the old appliances they wouldn't let you touch. Perhaps it's hygiene. Maybe someone used the microwave to heat rats up to feed to a snake or for medical purposes and the centre don't want to be sued. Who knows.

I think it has turned into a 'waste management centre' Sad. It really seems crazy when we are all supposed to be reusing as much as possible. If my microwave plate couldn't survive the washing up in my kitchen then I don't see the ones there surviving a trip to wherever they take them to!!

It's when you read/hear stories like this, you find yourself wondering what all the fuss about the environment is ? After all, it can't be that bad if there's scope for this sort of thing.

When the powers that be act like it's serious. So will I.
