AIBU to hate being the killjoy?

New senior manager is trying to improve our work environment on a non-existent staff-welfare budget. One of the things she has done is to put reed diffusers in most rooms. Nice, subtle, light fragrances.

I'm allergic to many fragrance chemicals.

Not a life-threatening anaphylactic allergy, but still unpleasant, long-lasting consequences for me. It's possible that the fragrances do not contain my specific allergens, though that's also very unlikely. There's no knowing when, or even if, I'll react.

I'd prefer if the diffusers weren't there at all. But most of the staff really appreciate all the little touches, and like the diffusers.

AIBU to hate being a killjoy about this? What can I do? Is there anything that doesn't involve fragrances that I can offer as an alternative?

Well as you are uncertain about your allergies, you can't really complain.

Lol yes YABU

What kind of workplace is it, I have worked in many office environments and people would complain if somebody sprayed perfume / deodorant / strong cleaning spray so can't imagine this would go down well in most offices.

I would hate that smell - surely you don't have to be allergic to it to complain about it?

Strongmummy · 07/01/2020 21:15

So are you affected by them or not? If no, then yabu. If yes, then have a quiet word and suggest some fragrances you’re not affected by

Purpleartichoke · 07/01/2020 21:15

I’d have to insist they be removed, but I have a documented fragrance allergy and Must avoid all fragrance. It might’ve different if manufacturers were required to list specific ingredients, but since they don’t, a blanket fragrance ban it must be.

Can you email the company that makes the diffusers to see what they contain - if they contain allergens then do ask for them to be removed, or a compromise, one room without.

Dilbertian · 07/01/2020 21:19

Purpleartichoke, exactly.

Doh! I just realised that I posted this in AIBU instead of in Allergies

If you are allergic I’m sure they will accept it and remove them
