AIBU to just leave a job?

I have never just walked out of a job before, but my current role has become intolerable and is actually making a current medical condition worse (I don't need a dr to tell me this - its previously diagnosed as stress related acid reflux). I have been offered a job in a completely different field, much better conditions but they want me to start in a week. I would love this new job!

I have only been at my current job for 2 months and I am on a 6 month probationary period. It's a fixed term contract until 31st August 2020. My contract is confusing me but I think it's because I'm stressing about it; it states: "if for any reason this contract is terminated in advance of that, employer or employee must give a minimum of 1 weeks notice. If this contract is for a period in excess of 3 months, your notice period will be determined by your length of service."

Why do I feel like I am trying to understand a foreign language???

Is it terribly unreasonable to just give a week? I have brought my issues up with them, but they don't do anything or say "it's part of the job" and leave it at that. I don't want to end up having to take months off again with the acid reflux.

I would tell your employer that you are leaving, and start your new job in a week. Your current employer would rather you leave with minimal notice than having an employee on sick leave indefinitely.

I wish I'd trusted my gut instinct after a week about how stressful the job was. Six years in and it's even harder.

I've worked for 25 years in various roles with nowhere near this level of stress and I knew it from the first week but kept hanging on in the hope things would improve, so grab that new job!

Thank you - what you say makes sense. I feel a bit sh*tty just giving a week - and I don't want bad references later on - but seeing as it's only 2 months I may be able to omit it from future CV's (which I hopefully wont need!). Xx

Just go, there's clearly room for you to only give a week's notice and as you say, no need to include on your cv. Ain't no job worth dying for, in the words of Ice T.

God love Ice T! He spoke much wisdom!

The danger is though, do you need a reference from this job for your new one? I have some couple on month old staff and if they left me now with 1 weeks notice, I'd be furious.

Ilikewinter · 07/01/2020 19:50

As you've been there for less than 3 months you only need to give a weeks notice. Between 3-6 months you need to give longer, but the bit of the contract you've posted doesnt state how much.

Give a week as required and move onto your new job...good luck!

Isleepinahedgefund · 07/01/2020 20:50

Yes give a week and move on to the fab sounding new job. Good luck, hope the new role goes well!

Useful22 · 07/01/2020 21:02

They could give you a weeks notice, whats the difference. It's their contract terms not yours. They aren't allowed to give personal references, it would have to be factual.

myfuckingfreezer · 07/01/2020 22:35

They aren't allowed to give personal references, it would have to be factual.

That's not true, I give personal references all the time. It's also a myth that you can't give bad references. You can as long as they're accurate. I've given a bad reference and refused to give one.

OP I wasn't saying that before about references to scare you but it's a serious consideration. Your contract seems ambiguous give the line about length of service. Suggest you have a chat with your line manager and explain you're unhappy and that you'd like to go, and can they clarify your notice situation.
