To wonder why I am always freezing?

SAMX19 · 07/01/2020 13:04

I’ve always felt the cold but it seems to be getting worse. It’s got to the point now where I’m anxious about going to other peoples houses because I can’t cope with the temperature. Luckily I live in a particularly warm house. It’s mid terrace and has amazing insulation but even still, I can be cold, even with having jumpers on, sheepskin slippers and being under a blanket.

It is starting to really frustrate me. I find anything under around 22 degrees pretty unbearable. At night I wear jogging bottoms and a jumper to bed as well as thermal socks and I sometimes still wake up cold.

It’s starting to become such a problem for me. I mean, it’s rude to keep your jacket on when visiting friends but no matter how much I wrap up, I just find other peoples houses uncomfortably cold.

I just don’t understand why I’m always so cold in temperatures that everyone else seem to find perfectly fine.

Any chance you could be anemic?

Cocolapew · 07/01/2020 13:05

Thyroid?
Low iron?

Housechaos · 07/01/2020 13:07

I was like this with very very low iron. I needed a blood transfusion in the end, left it far too long until really poorly.

BeatriceTheBeast · 07/01/2020 13:07

My mum was like this and she was a bit malnourished, low iron and low blood sugar quite a lot.

alwaysmovingforwards · 07/01/2020 13:13

Do you do any exercise?
I find going for a run and getting the heart beating / blood pumping makes me feel warmer for the whole day afterwards.
On the days I don't exercise I feel the cold much more, right to my bones.
Might be worth a try.

WhatHaveIFound · 07/01/2020 13:13

My DD is like that when she had low iron levels.

alwaysmovingforwards · 07/01/2020 13:13

Or it could be low blood pressure.

SAMX19 · 07/01/2020 13:13

I was aenemic in pregnancy a few years ago so I suppose there is a chance I could be again. I wonder if I should book an appointment with my GP and have some blood tests done.

It’s honestly awful Sad

Definitely get checked out. I am a 'cold' person and will be wearing a jumper when everyone else is in t-shirts. I almost always have some kind of scarf on as I find if the air is on my neck I feel even colder.

But there have been times when I have been like you and it was anaemia.
I also think I have thyroid problems but the NHS levels to trigger proper investigation are rubbish and so I keep suffering because my GP won't investigate my symptoms - he just fobs me off with it being 'one of those things'.

cheeseandpineapple · 07/01/2020 13:18

Could be poor circulation, get yourself checked out but exercise should help no matter what. There are apps where you can do a short work out at home and don’t need anything except maybe a chair or step for some of the exercises. It really warms you up. Also would recommend an electric blanket for your bed (can be life changing) so you get into a warm bed and don’t need to warm yourself up as that can make it hard to sleep.

Proseccopeach · 07/01/2020 13:20

Do you eat enough? I know when I'm following my diet as I feel colder and pee more.

TheNoodlesIncident · 07/01/2020 13:20

Reynaud's Syndrome?

Tbh I'm like this too OP. My blood flow seems quite sluggish (it actually stopped in my arm when I was donating blood years ago) and when the air temperature is low - like you say, about 21 degrees for me - it stops getting to my hands and feet effectively. My fingers shrivel and turn pale and wrinkled. My bones ache, especially the ones near the surface like wrists and elbows. My feet are stone cold inside slippers and thick fluffy socks.

It's fine when I'm exercising, but as soon as I stop it all starts slowing down again. I used to race around in my lunch hour and arrive back at work warm and sweaty, but after a few minutes at my workstation I was cold and shivering again. It is not nice.

I am not anaemic or underweight. It's just my blood shuts down at 21 degrees. I LIVE for our summer holiday when I can go to Greece or similar and luxuriate in >30 degrees. It's such a relief to be comfortable and the pain just disappears.

BigButtons · 07/01/2020 13:21

I'm always cold. I don't have iron problems but I suspect I have circulation problems. It is becoming an increasing issue as I get older. I remember my dad being the same.
I would go to the GP and checked out.

inwood · 07/01/2020 13:23

I was going to suggest raynauds too.

2020BetterBeBetter · 07/01/2020 13:24

Definitely get some blood tests.

I have always felt the cold and I do now have several auto immune conditions so do wonder whether my childhood chills was an early sign. 🤷🏻‍♀️

ThisIsAllaMooPoint · 07/01/2020 13:24

I’m the same and I get so embarrassed by it. Even 22 is a bit chilly for me which is temperature in my house now. I’m wearing a long t shirt plus a thick fleece. I’m in thermals from about September to May. No health issues it’s just how I have always been. When it gets to 28 Celsius people start talking about it being a heatwave but for me that’s quite pleasant!

TheNoodlesIncident · 07/01/2020 13:25

I should say this isn't a new thing for me, I've been this way since I was about 14-15. The only time I didn't feel the cold was when I was pregnant; I put that down to the fact that you make about 33% more blood when you're pregnant. It was amazing to walk about outside in the UK in just a T shirt on top!

If this is a new thing for you, it may well be something like anaemia so worth checking out.

megletthesecond · 07/01/2020 13:40

I'm always cold. Been tested for everything over the years and I'm as fit as a fiddle. I've accepted it's just because I'm thin and have low blood pressure.
I do layer up in others peoples houses though. To me they feel sub-zero.

dottiedodah · 07/01/2020 13:47

Do you wear Thermals at all? M and S have a lovely range of pretty thermal tops long sleeve and flowery/Sparkly ,also their thermal socks are great .look and feel like normal socks but really warm! I found these make a real difference to me .They also have plain cream or black leggings /vests as well .Bloody Hell I sound like an advert for them dont I!.At home can you wear a hat indoors or to bed ? "Nightcaps "available on Amazon £6.55 .Wee Willie Winkie style! When visiting friends maybe just take a nice wooley jumper. Cardi ? My DH says that apparently lots of thin layers are best for keeping warmth in .Also expensive but my Cousin who feels the cold swears by ,are Cashmere cardigans /jumpers bit of an investment at about £50 /£60 but can sometimes pick up for less on E Bay .

candycane222 · 07/01/2020 13:48

Definitely worth getting checked out. Also might be made worse if you have a small appeite or are dieting.

Hopefully you can find a way to improve things but I do swear by long underwear (long sleeves on top, and long bottoms/thermal tights: silk is great if you can afford it as it is warm but very light and slippy, so comfortable. A scarf also seems to make a disproportionate difference compared to the amount of body they actually cover, definitely recommend wearing a lightweight scarf indoors.

MashedSpud · 07/01/2020 13:50

Are you underweight?

candycane222 · 07/01/2020 13:52

Oh and noodles I can also get very shivery after exercise unless I shower. I have mild raynauds too (just the odd dead finger in cold water Grin

FudgeBrownie2019 · 07/01/2020 13:58

Have your thyroid, iron and B6 levels checked if you possibly can. I have a thyroid condition called Hashimotos and I'm cold all of the time regardless of the weather. It's lovely in summer; I could sit on the equator line and not sweat much. Winter is harder, so I keep the house at 20 degrees, always wear socks, layers and take slippers with me when visiting friends, and Turtle Doves fingerless gloves are a godsend.

SAMX19 · 07/01/2020 13:59

I’m slim but not underweight. I think my BMI is around 20 or 21.

I’ve booked a GP appointment which is 2 weeks away but never mind.

I always wear woolly jumpers/cardigans when visiting friends but it just doesn’t help enough 👎🏻 I will definitely take a look at the M&S thermal range and have maybe buy a couple of scarves etc.

I do struggle a bit with fatigue so I’m thinking anaemia could be quite likely.

Hope the GP can do something for you op. I definitely think it's a good idea to get seen, as it might be easily fixed.

Sorry, if this is a rude question, but do you drink a lot of alcohol? My mum was actually a healthy weight, even a bit chubby at times, and malnourished at the same time, as she was an alcoholic, so all her calories came from alcohol. DEFINITELY NOT saying you are, but just that you can be malnourished as well as a healthy weight if a lot of your calories come from alcohol.
