I want a job that will pay 35-40k (leaving teaching)

I'm a teacher, thinking about leaving the profession. I've got a 1st class education degree, and I've been teaching for a few years. Ive enjoyed it so far, but I fancy a change now.

Ideally I want a job that will lead to a 35-40k salary in the first 10 years. I've taught since graduation, so don't really have any ideas what I would like to do other than teach. I would like a job that matches or exceeds my teaching salary. Any suggestions about what I could work as? I'd rather not retrain, but wouldn't be totally adverse to a master's conversion course for the right industry/role.

It's "averse to", btw, not "adverse". Best to have the correct word usage in future applications. There is a whole world of opportunity out there for you, so good luck in your next adventure.

My mum earned good money as a medical rep.

gluetack · 06/01/2020 17:57

@Soontobe60 you need to be a very advanced Excel user and able to generate graphs etc so fair enough that's maths but my husband didn't do any maths classes at uni. He's in financial audit now and it still doesn't involve any maths really.

natwebb79 · 06/01/2020 17:57

I've come out of teaching and retrained to be a careers professional. After a year of working on 2 fixed-term projects I now manage an employability skills award at my local uni. Will be back on £40,000 within 5 years. Good luck!

Disfordarkchocolate · 06/01/2020 18:04

Ofsted?

Amrapaali · 06/01/2020 18:05

Technical Author.
Look up the job descriptions on job sites. Unique roles that pay well but not so niche that you have to retrain completely...

inwood · 06/01/2020 18:06

Bid writer

Move into advisory work for the LEA? As an SEN officer without QTS I was on £34k.

Mintjulia · 06/01/2020 18:11

You could do a Certificate of Marketing while working as a teacher and then transfer. With good English and PPE, marketing for one of the professions, maybe an accounting firm or a public sector agency, would be a reasonable jump.

MrsWeatherwax · 06/01/2020 18:21

A number of friends and family have escaped from teaching recently. Do you enjoy/are you good at the plate spinning, organisation, planning and team work side of things? An immediate move into Project coordinator type role(22k-30k) whilst doing Prince 2/Agile qualifications would lead to Project Manager roles paying your target salary very quickly and skills would be super transferable across lots of different sectors.

Musmerian · 06/01/2020 18:22

@Newgirls - publishing is not only notoriously badly paid but also very competitive with people looking to get a foot in the door. I suspect an education degree may be a disadvantage (ironically).

Ronia · 06/01/2020 18:27

You want to stay in education? Any experience mentoring or at SLT level? Could apply somewhere like Teach First to train others to be teachers?

Modestandatinybitsexy · 06/01/2020 18:27

Do you have an exam board near you? A lot of teachers get hired to be subject specialists for writing papers, or marking papers. An exam board would probably look kindly on your teaching experience too.
Also a lot of universities have exam departments with similar jobs.

NicLondon1 · 06/01/2020 18:30

You could teach at a private school, or look to become a Head teacher.
Otherwise, how about a Copywriter in Advertising? Fantastically well paid! But long hours and pressure to come up with ideas. I think you need a one year Diploma.
I'm not sure that Publishing or Journalism is that well paid, but very rewarding... Marketing can be very well paid in the private sector.

Serin · 06/01/2020 18:32

Social work
Educational officer with a charity or museum etc.
Author/playwright.
Comedian.
Driving instructor
Adult/special needs "foster carer".
Private tutor.
Cat carer (mine charges £15 per visit and it takes her 10 mins to feed and water our kitty).

TitsInAbsentia · 06/01/2020 18:33

Depends where you live as to what's available but I suspect the civil service would snap you up.

kateandme · 06/01/2020 18:33

publishing.book editing.

kateandme · 06/01/2020 18:42

school inspector.
would you want to travel to different country to teach?

Mum2threekdz · 06/01/2020 18:43

Look at becoming a Chartered Secretary- very high salaries once you get some solid experience

MadameButterfingers · 06/01/2020 18:45

You will struggle to get into a Tech Author role as you have no technical background. You would need a working knowledge of something like software engineering or programming. You could do a conversions Master's degree but it is a bit risky as you still wouldn't have much experience. I would be reluctant to recruit someone with no tech background unless it was for a junior role.

You have skills that are transferable - public speaking is a strong skill to have.
I'd look at training or look at how to get into design of interactive learning.

It might be worth looking at which skills you have that are transferable, what skills you like using, what sort of environment you would like to work in.

Project management might be an option. As might be events coordinating.

Consultancy/training would be my initial thought because you can stand in front of a room of people and speak.

pinkstripeycat · 06/01/2020 18:46

Driving instructor £54k 37hr week

TomCruises · 06/01/2020 18:47

Sales/business development can be very lucrative- I’m in the Tech sector (security software) and the money is good.

I do have a degree in business, but many of my colleagues don’t.

AraGrand · 06/01/2020 18:48

Do you have any outside interests?

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 06/01/2020 18:50

Educational psychologist?

Masters in psychology then further training but could exceed current salary within 10 years.

elmosducks · 06/01/2020 18:59

I heard robbing a bank can pay well.

Apparently accomodation can also offered?
