I can't be the only one on MN who

doesn't already have 100s of 1000s in a pension pot
or a defined benefit pension awaiting me
or a stonking great property portfolio

Am I .....?

And if you have any of the above this isn't the thread for you Grin

I'm 40. I don't have a pension. On the up side, I have a chronic illness that will see me off before it's a problem.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 06/01/2020 17:27

I have, but only because as a teacher I was auto enrolled in it 20 plus years ago when I started.
If I'd gone into any other job I probably would have very little or nothing.

One of my sisters has just the state one and may have enough qualifying years. My other sister will not have enough qualifying years and will be relying on pension benefits instead unless she buys in extra years at some point.

DragonUdders · 06/01/2020 17:27

@ElefanteIntheroom - I'm sorry, I don't know about Housing Benefit.

PaprikaPringle · 06/01/2020 17:29

Welcome one and all!

I’m 36 and have £1,900 in my pension pot.

OldQueen1969 · 06/01/2020 17:30

Another feckless and dependent on a man idiot over here waves

I'm just about to turn 51, and despite many, many efforts have had all attempts at careers scuppered (mainly by caring responsibilities). I won't qualify for a state pension as I've not paid enough consistently in NI contributions - when I have been working (and I have worked damn hard when able) I have received letters from HMRC saying if I topped up at the end of various financial years to the tune of 2 or 3 hundred pounds it would count, but honestly, if I'd had that money at any point I wouldn't have been in that position IYSWIM.

Now I'm running a business, not able to draw a wage, about to ditch bricks and mortar for an online and events presence only, my DP supports me and I accept it's all my own fault for not being better organised. So I'll be in harness till I drop or the state introduces the concept of euthanasia for the non-productive. No capital assets, no hope of inheritance, but I keep on plodding - something must come up - adapt and survive and all that Smile

Fatfat · 06/01/2020 17:31

I’m 27 and got about £6k in there so not a lot, but trying to put as much away as possible (enough to get the 5% matched contribution from my employer) plus £300 per month into a stocks and shares ISA investment.

mindutopia · 06/01/2020 17:31

I was training pretty much til my mid 30s and none of my jobs before then offered a pension. I have no idea what’s in there now, but I’ve only paid into it for a few years. I have a good pension though and it will accumulate eventually.

But we do have a lot invested and will have quite a bit of property by the time we retire, I hope. We are mid-late 30s now. So I really haven’t given it much thought.

Chocolate1984 · 06/01/2020 17:33

I’m 40 and mine is £60,000. Only paid in for maybe 10 years. Not contributed since 2012. I’m hoping my husband dies first and I get his life insurance and pension.

Looobyloo · 06/01/2020 17:33

I'm 47 I have about £4000 in mine and £8000 in savings. I'm self employed so don't have any extra cash.

t scares the shit out of me if I think too much about it. Especially when some mumsnetters appear to have millions in theirs.

On the plus side I've travelled lots already so when I'm old and knackered I wont need a lot of money and will happily work till I'm 80.

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 06/01/2020 17:34

I can either afford to pay into a pension, to to try to help my children get an education which will enable them to work their way out of poverty. The kids win.

missanony · 06/01/2020 17:35

If anyone watches the marvelous mrs maisel on prime there’s a plan in the last series where they work out how much they’ve got and therefore when they have to die.

There are so many in the situation of renting a house, little or no pension, no ability to save etc that I can only see that working forever if you can or elderly poverty if you can’t as the future. Perhaps a return to 3 generation living where grandparents live in and are looked after by younger working children?

dreamingofmushrooms · 06/01/2020 17:35

I have sod all. Never earned enough to be able to put more than the absolute bare minimum in, and for 20 years I was either a sahm or self-employed earning a pittance and there was not enough money for essentials, let alone savings or a pension.

Still, look on the bright side, I have to work 7 more years before I'm allowed to retire so Yay!!! Plenty of time to make up the shortfall Confused

SunshineAngel · 06/01/2020 17:37

I'm 29 and have a grand total of £700. That should keep me fed and housed for what could potentially be 40 years of retirement if I beat all the odds..

Charlottejade89 · 06/01/2020 17:41

I'm almost 31 and I've got nothing, no pension, no property or savings

GoddessOfTransformativeWrath · 06/01/2020 17:42

Im 49 and i spent just shy of the 10 yrs in london required to qualify for a uk pension, then i returned to ireland. By the time i returned to work it was obviously impossible to qualify for the full irish state pension either. I looked into importing uk credits but being shy of the 10 years seems bad....

I never married my kids dad so no portion of his pension. No savings. No assets. No shares. No maintenance now either.

I am going to have to sell my house in dublin and but to some county where they would flog gays and unmarried mothers. 😭😭😭

GoddessOfTransformativeWrath · 06/01/2020 17:43

Im 95% joking btw. Roscomon is nice in winter!

Baaaahhhhh · 06/01/2020 17:44

I’m hoping my husband dies first and I get his life insurance and pension

Ha ha ha, me too!!! DH is worth a fortune dead Grin. Life insurances, pensions, and something like a 3x in death benefit from work, oh, and the mortgage gets paid off too.

However, even alive he will be keeping me, as I only have about £35k, which was the contracted out portion of my salary from the 80's onwards. I never put any other money in, and have been a SAHP for quite a few years. I do however have pretty much a full state pension entitlement because of years built up from child benefit. I think I only lose about £5 a week from the contracting out.

We only have one house, but worth quite a lot, so we will downsize at some point.

GoddessOfTransformativeWrath · 06/01/2020 17:45

👍🍷 ha ha

You gorra larf as Cilla said.

Soontobe60 · 06/01/2020 17:45

My DH has no private pension. I have a teachers pension I've just started getting, will get my state pension in 6 years and he will get his state pension in 12 years. He doesn't earn a lot, and we manage very well now in his income and my pension. We would be fine if he needed to retire earlier or go part time once I get my state pension, and that's probably what we'll do.

lynsey91 · 06/01/2020 17:45

I am almost 66 and will only have my state pension which I will start getting in April. I have been told i will get £889 a month. I didn't ever opt out of serps so will get a bit more than the basic pension.

DH still works and earns reasonable money thank goodness. He is only 62 so a while before he can retire but he also will only get the state pension.

whereishappyat · 06/01/2020 17:48

I'm 30 and haven't got a penny, I don't work and I won't be in a position to for another 4/5 years but could realistically be out of work for another 10. I don't get any benefits. I'm not sure what will be for me at pension age.

kirstinm · 06/01/2020 17:50

Pretty much nothing but also have a chronic illness which means I (almost certainly) won't reach retirement age.

TotallyWipedout · 06/01/2020 18:01

I used to have the potential for a great pension. Final salary. Decent career prospects and all that in the public sector

But life happened. Nothing I can do about it. I can't turn back the clock

@chomalungma wrote my post for me.

Lovemusic33 · 06/01/2020 18:03

37 and only just started paying in to a pension, I only work part time as I’m a full time carer to disabled dd, I pay a small amount into a pension each month which won’t amount to much when I reach retirement age Sad.
