To ask neighbours to take their flag down

I live in a small estate. The garden that backs on to mine has a fort type thing in a tree, the kids made it in the summer with a big flag on it, I think it is a paw patrol one so I assume they are young. I don't want to upset them.

In the summer there were no issues but we now have winter weather so the wind has picked up. On bad nights it sets off my security light which can wake me up but normally always wakes the dog who seems to think somebody's in the garden.

I know it's my issue (the light/dog) but they haven't been out playing there since August. Wibu to ask them to take the flag down during windier months?

I would rather not unplug the light as last year somebody down the road was burgled.

Adjust or change the sensor, most of these sensors are cheap poor quality and go off easily. Thinking about it I don't think the flag would do it? Or trees etc would?

There is normally a compromise - they may be happy to take the flag down in the winter, it probably getting ruined anyway. But if your light sensor is too sensitive and it is a cat/rat etc setting it off then you will have to accept any complaints they may have about your light being a pain and deal with that as reasonably as you expect them to deal with their flag

Just ask them! They have probably forgotten it's even there as long as your nice about it it won't be awkward 😁

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 06/01/2020 12:37

So you wish to make sure any potential burglars can see what they're doing?

StreetwiseHercules · 06/01/2020 12:40

Now I’ve read everything. “Hello neighbour, your children’s paw patrol flag is setting off our security light, could you please remove on winter months? You may re-fly the Paw Patrol coat of arms upon the Spring Equinox.”

Insane.

UVF flag- don't ask
Paw Patrol- ask

I'd have another go at angling the motion detector in a more sensible direction first, then if that doesn't work, go and have a chat with them.

nowaypose · 06/01/2020 12:55

Well they’re not using it atm anyway so just politely ask them to take it down temporarily until the weather picks up.

ThanosSavedMe · 06/01/2020 15:20

@MrsExpo but the council are not aware of it, it would be the op alerting them, no one else. Op hasn’t complained about the treehouse only that the flag may be causing an issue with the light. Much better to try angling the sensor or ask the neighbours nicely if they could remove the flag over the winter than check with the council if the treehouse has planning permission

The PIR lights don't seem too expensive, I think motion sensor has been phased out in favour of these now. When we were in B&Q last week they were all PIR or the mains operated ones.

Lunafortheloveogod · 06/01/2020 15:45

Just ask if they can tie it down or take it down for the winter? I don’t think they’ll bite.. if they do I suppose you know they’re more into paw patrol than the kids.

Don’t destroy it or go round like a woman possessed after a couple of gins or go into planning permission n fuckin flag height.
