To ask how much you pay for electricity?

Hello!

Sorry for posting here, but new to Mumsnet and not sure which other section to put this in.

Just after some insight into energy prices/providers. I used to pay about £55/month for my electricity with Scottish Power. I used USwitch about 6 months ago which said that I could get my energy for £40/mo with Bulb. I switched. Now Bulb has written to me to say that my account is in debit and I should be paying £75/mo for my energy use.

Has anyone else experienced this? Obviously I will be switching again, but don't want to end up getting another low quote that nearly doubles 6 months later! AIBU to ask: who is your supplier and how much do you pay a month? And was this in line with what you were originally quoted upfront? Just wondering what is a "normal" amount to expect to pay.

Thanks in advance for any insights :-)

@coiner I was on mat leave at the time so every penny helped! I also put it in Martin Lewis site and I searched twitter looking for people that were asking questions about switching to them and @ them directly!

Totally worth it. Grin

If you only have electricity, all suppliers and comparison sites are bad at estimating. Make sure you send regular meter readings and don't panic if the estimate goes up now. On the Bulb site you can reset the monthly amount to the level you think it should be and in the summer it will even out.

I have electricity only and am with Bulb precisely because it's easier for me to control. I don't end up running into huge credit or debit because I am better at estimating my usage than their systems (which seem to all work on a 6 month average).

@47Inliverpool1 i'm with british gas

bridgetreilly · 05/01/2020 18:17

Also, if anyone is thinking of switching energy suppliers to Bulb, feel free to use my link! I'll get £50 off my bill and so will you: www.bulb.me/rosalind8636

Three bed semi, I have has an electric. My electric is on a dd of £17 a week. I think it’s a little high but I think we do probably use a lot of electric as have three kids who are home educated so home more than most. We don’t use the tumble dryer, maybe only once a fortnight or so.

I'm on a fixed tariff with EDF which is about to end. Pay £90 a month for both...no idea how its split. Heard good things about Bulb and Octopus so might consider either of them.

As previous poster said I also use Martin Lewis' energy club and I find it invaluable. It notes customer service as well as cost - I'm not the type to go with a rubbish/risky company to save £50 a year!

GallusAlice79 · 05/01/2020 18:22

Should have said, £90 for a 4 bed detached in Scotland.

Copperleaves · 05/01/2020 18:24

Bulb sounds like a pyramid scheme

JaceLancs · 05/01/2020 18:26

I pay £90 gas and electricity total (3 bed semi)
Just leaving npower as my fixed rate ended 31 Dec, and found I’m over £300 in credit - hoping to get it back soon to cover the long January month

mencken · 05/01/2020 18:28

as mentioned way upthread, it is all about unit price and standing charge. OP, if you tell us what those are and what comparison sites tell you it will help. And you'll be one of the first on these threads ever to do so....

Pumpkinpie1 · 05/01/2020 20:43

I’ve just changed to octopus energy and knocked. £70 a month off my gas and electricity bill. Now we are on a fixed tariff for a year
Also knocked over £40 a month off our virgin media bill by making a phone call
Daft as it sounds that’s over a £100 a month towards a holiday Smile

dementedpixie · 05/01/2020 20:48

I've just switched to Octopus today too and the tariff details are cheaper than what EDF (my current supplier) was offering after my fixed rate ends. I got a referral code from a friend on fb which gives £50 to me and also to her when my account is up and running

Daftodil · 05/01/2020 20:49

My unit rate with bulb is 12.94p/kWh. Standing charge is 19.47p/day. No idea what it was with previous supplier as I (rather foolishly) didn't look at that when I switched - just trusted USwitch.

Are these good/bad figures? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Is it economy 7, do you have storage heaters? Your usage is important too. How much is that?

bionicnemonic · 05/01/2020 21:23

I was with the co-op, it was £45 per month for gas and electricity. Tarring ended and would have been increased so I shopped around and Bulb came up as the best at £60. Within a few months guess what? £75. Few months more and they now say it should be £85. Not impressed. Plus offered a friend the introduction offer and he looked into it and it was more for him than going direct, so look out for that as well

Freddiefox · 05/01/2020 22:51

I pay 14.01p per unit
And 17.91p per day standing charge.

I’m with octopus and have found them expensive but in a fixed rate and they were cheapest at the time.

Arnoldthecat · 05/01/2020 23:00

Certainly,,i pay a standing charge of £4.50 per thirty days and £0.028250 pence per kwh and 5% vat on top of all that

coiner · 07/01/2020 18:56

Welp, if anyone wants my Bulb referral for a £50 credit, it's here: www.bulb.me/rhydiane3924

I'd be grateful if it's used just once! They took my bill from £85 to £47 a month for a 3 bed semi that uses LOTS of technology and appliances.

cptartapp · 07/01/2020 19:00

I've been with Bulb for over twelve months. They've only ever reduced our monthly bills. £47 per month and still in credit, 4 bed semi. Two adults, two teens.

bridgetreilly · 07/01/2020 19:20

My Bulb tariff is 20.44p per day standing charge and 13.64p per kWh. That's the Vari-fair tariff. I don't have a smart meter or solar panels, so that's the only option open to me with them.

bridgetreilly · 07/01/2020 19:32

Oh, and those prices include VAT.

Bunnyfuller · 07/01/2020 19:36

£46 a month, family of 4 (2 teenage girls with the usual device addictions). We aren’t connected to gas so Oil central heating.

Bunnyfuller · 07/01/2020 19:36

With Bulb!

I'm with Scottish power OP unit is 12.2p standing charge 19.74p , I don't see how bulb would be cheaper based on your tariff... I submit readings every month to make sure my DD stays accurate and change fixed tariff every year, usually end up staying with SP but using uSwitch get a better tariff than they can offer direct (I've of their customer service people told me to do it years ago), I also use Quidco and get £30-£50 cash back each time I switch too.
