To have taken the dressing off already?

Had implant removed on 2nd Jan. Was told to keep dressing on for 5 days and the bandage over the top for 2 days. I took the top bandage off yesterday, cause it was driving me mad with the itching.

I've removed the dressing now as well as my god I couldn't stand how itchy it was.

It should be fine right? As long as I keep it clean?

I don't remember even having a proper dressing when I had my last one out - I think a plaster should be fine, although if the skin around it is damaged, you might just want to let it air for a bit. So long as it's not showing signs of infection and isn't getting repeatedly knocked, then I wouldn't worry about it (and I totally sympathise re itchy dressings - WAY worse than the original injury a lot of the time!).

IAmNotLego · 04/01/2020 19:07

I always take dressings off easily due to the itching. The glue doesn't really agree with me. I've never had any issues.

I'd make sure you keep the area dry. (Don't submerge in the bath etc

imfeelinit · 04/01/2020 19:09

It'll be fine. When I got mines out I was sent away from the nurse with a dressing and bandage on and the instructions to remove after 24hrs. The bandage was to help with any bruising.

BananaChocolateLump · 04/01/2020 19:10

I don't understand not getting it wet? As long as I dry it properly surely its fine? Is a gremlin gonna hop out of it if I do?! Grin

I just had a plaster on mine. I just made sure I dried it properly after a shower and put a fresh plaster on.

RachelEllenR · 04/01/2020 22:00

Mine really itched too, I removed it and bought new ones so I could put it on at a slightly different angle.

Mumof1andacat · 04/01/2020 22:04

I took the dressing off after a couple of days but I learnt the hard way once and took the bandage off too early and bruised really bad

Retroflex · 05/01/2020 01:48

@BananaChocolateLump the "not getting it wet" thing has nothing to do with Gremlins like in the movie, but it increases the chances of getting infected with bacteria which could lead to a whole host of problems, not to mention you probably have steri strips over the incision, which need to remain in place.

BananaChocolateLump · 05/01/2020 09:12

I have taken the steri strips off as well. It is my arm. I am more than capable of taking care of a wound so it does not get infected. I am 30 years old, bad enough I was spoken to like an immature little child when they took it out.

If it does get wet, I'll dry it!! FGS my arms not gonna drop off is it.

Given your update the bacteria are sure to stay away from you.

Retroflex · 05/01/2020 15:51

Given that you've ignored all the advice that you were given by the medical professional already, I'm not surprised that you were "spoken to like an immature little child when they took it out" Hmm

Soontobe60 · 05/01/2020 16:00

I was 60 years old when I didn't follow the surgeon's advice and removed the dressing on my wound where I had a skin cancer removed under local anaesthetic as the dressing was itching like mad. I covered it whilst I showered, dried it thoroughly and yet still managed to end up with an infected wound that then had to be operated on under a ga leaving me with a much bigger scar, and not insignificant pain for several weeks.
I thought I knew better. As do you, OP
Chances are you'll have no issues, but you were given instructions for a good reason, not so that whoever gave you those instructions could treat you like a little girl 🤷🏼‍♀️

RhymingRabbit3 · 05/01/2020 16:26

Why did you ask, you clearly already know best.

I'm pretty sure mine was only closed with steri strips when I had mine removed, no dressing. But I wouldn't have removed the steri strips as it will take longer to heal.

BananaChocolateLump · 06/01/2020 07:54

Because I've had a bloody allergic reaction and figured there would be other ways of looking after the wound!

I'm sorry if I've come across as a knows better but that is not the case. If it does get infected then there are ways of sorting that as well.
