I've got an assignment due in on Monday and the wording isn't quite clear about one part. I checked the module guide and it isn't mentioned in there.

It's broken into parts and what we're expected to do for one part isn't stated so you have the work for parts a and c but not b if that makes sense.

Lecturer doesn't celebrate Christmas and said to email any time if we need help. I'm still waiting for a response but I can't finish the assignment. The other students are also stuck. I contacted him on Monday and I'm still waiting for a reply. Aibu?

Feeling slightly stressed!

Hes probably not working due to christmas break regardless of whether he celebrates or not

Bluntness100 · 04/01/2020 07:05

Unreasonable about what sorry?

Pipandmum · 04/01/2020 07:07

Have you tried again? Its the weekend so I would have tried earlier in the week. Doesn't have anything to do with whether he celebrates Christmas if he said he's available. Try and complete as much as you can - that's all you can do and if the rest of the class is stuck you won't be singled out.

QuestionableMouse · 04/01/2020 07:13

He literally said to contact him if we needed help.

TitianaTitsling · 04/01/2020 07:13

When were you given the assignment?

hazell42 · 04/01/2020 07:15

Well contact him again! Get other students to contact also

QuestionableMouse · 04/01/2020 07:30

Early December. I've been working on it for a few weeks but didn't realise until recently that there was a part B! (they're not labelled a b c on the actual assignment)

mousemousse · 04/01/2020 07:32

Yabu, term time doesn't start until Monday in most places, it's also the weekend. If you wanted help then you also left it quite late to ask, just a week before deadline and in the holidays, doesn't matter whether they celebrate Xmas or not, or if they said they'd respond to emails, plans change.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 04/01/2020 07:34

What time did you contact him on Monday? Because then it was NYE and NYD and he's probably had a shit ton of emails.

He may also have realised you've all had similar problems so may be compiling some materials for you.

AvaSnowdrop · 04/01/2020 07:37

Students forget that their lecturers are employees. He’s on holiday from work, I doubt he’s even checked his email. Him not celebrating Christmas has no bearing on his employment rights, it’s perfectly reasonable for him to be off work and not available.

Apolloanddaphne · 04/01/2020 07:37

Monday wasn't NYE. That was Tuesday. I I suspect he is on AL though. He may be away visiting family or just choosing not to answer work e mails. You are unlikely to get a response over the weekend. I think you need to complete it as best you can and you can maybe call him on Monday day morning? What time is it due in?

Hahaha88 · 04/01/2020 07:39

Yabu to leave it so late

coconuttelegraph · 04/01/2020 07:40

If it's not clear and no one else has had a reply either why are you stressing? When he gets back to you do the work, it doesn't sound like a problem but maybe there's some info you haven't posted.

mousemousse · 04/01/2020 07:40

If he has checked his emails he won't respond now anyway because it's too close to deadline. If you've done it right then it won't matter, if you've done it wrong you'll panic and be unable to rectify it in the time available so any response is useless now. Learn from this and read your assignment briefs at the beginning of the module next time!

GiveHerHellFromUs · 04/01/2020 07:40

@Apolloanddaphne yeah I meant after Monday came NYE hence why I asked what time she emailed on Monday Hmm

QuestionableMouse · 04/01/2020 07:48

@AvaSnowdrop

I actually haven't forgotten that and wouldn't have contacted him but he specifically said (and on more than one occasion) to get in touch if we needed help. It was around midday when I sent the email.

I know I'm pushing it with the deadline. Unfortunately I had tonsillitis in December then got slammed with shifts over the festive period so I'm doing my best.

@mousemousse

Sorry but I don't buy that. If its like the other tasks it's around 1000 words and I can quite easily do that before the deadline if I know what to do.

I have until 23:59 on Monday night.

Blahblahblahnanana · 04/01/2020 07:53

It’s usually 3 working days for lecturers to reply. I’d do what you can and submit the assignment with an extenuating circumstances form stating part of the instructions were missing.

mousemousse · 04/01/2020 08:00

Yes you may think you can do it, but can you do it well? And why should he give up annual leave to explain things that could have been discussed during term time?

If you have evidence for the tonsillitis from the gp then you could submit on Monday and perhaps ask for an extension based on concessions to submit a second version, but ultimately you should have left time for those type of contingencies.

BentleyBelly · 04/01/2020 08:05

Did you get an out of office reply? I work at a university and we went back to work on Thursday. He should have replied by now.

RedHelenB · 04/01/2020 08:07

Dds tutor has emailed her back twice with helpful links over the holiday for an assignment due in Monday. Obviously down to individual tutors but if they're on holiday I woukdnt expect an immediate response.

hidinginthenightgarden · 04/01/2020 08:07

YANBU
If he wasn't going to answer emails, he shouldn't have said he was contactable. He would have said "I'm not back in until X date so make sure you ask questions before xmas" or similar.

Newname1978 · 04/01/2020 08:09

When were you given the assignment? Maybe when he said you could contact him he meant until the hols... did he specifically say you can contact me over the holidays? I think he assumed you would know he meant during term time...

redcarbluecar · 04/01/2020 08:22

Whether or not he celebrates Christmas is irrelevant - he’s on holiday and isn’t obliged (perhaps not able) to check email. I think he could have been a bit more honest and said that he MIGHT be able to respond to emailed queries, but to make sure anything significant had been raised before the holidays.
How do you know there’s a part B if there are no instructions for it and no abc lettering in the instructions? Could you just do what you DO have instructions for?
Do the best you can with it anyway in time for the deadline. Good luck.

QuestionableMouse · 04/01/2020 08:24

I don't know why so many people are doubting me on this. He specifically said that we could contact him over the holidays if we needed help.

@mousemousse thanks for the helpful reply. I got the assignment, came down with tonsillitis that lasted over two weeks and was pretty bad/I was quite unwell then Christmas arrived. I have to work because I need the money so the only thing that would have helped is not getting tonsillitis which isn't really in my control... Doing my best in an imperfect situation. Hasn't helped that I've had family staying. 🤷🏻‍♀️

No out of office reply either.
