AIBU to ask what you spent over the Christmas period?

Baileys4two · 03/01/2020 20:45

I've just sat down this evening to work out what I've spent over Christmas and New Year, so between 15th December and 3rd January.

Not sure if it's good or ridiculous/wasteful, so would appreciate opinions.

This is for all food and drink for that entire period, including:

1x free range Bronze Turkey, 5.46kg
1 x smoked gammon joint, 5.8kg
1 x unsmoked gammon joint, 5.2kg
1.1kg smoked salmon, some standard, some Extra Special brands.

●Christmas dinner with all the trimmings to cater for 6 (no child portions), including all drinks.
●Boxing Day full roast for 9, again with all the trimmings.
●All snacks, biscuits, chocolate, drinks, etc, for both those days.
● Get together for 7, including hot buffet, snacks, all drinks, and party game with 30 decent 'prizes'.
●Get together for 8, same as above.

Both get togethers lasted 7-8 hrs, so catered for enough party food, snacks, chocolates/biscuits and drink for the entire time.

This total also includes £22 on stamps, but not the cards as I bought them in January when they were cheap (probably about £8).

This also includes all presents for 2 teens (mine), my partner, my family and our friends/neighbours. Family and friends totalled 27 people, including 9 children, and 3 couples (counted as 1 person).

My total comes in at £940.14, and I probably still have enough food in to not need to do a food shop until sometime next week.

AIBU to ask what have others spent, and for how many, etc?

Thanks. Smile

Presents and food....approx €800
Presents for;
Two dc
Dh
My mum
My dad
Dniece
Dnephew
Food and treats for the week and Christmas dinner for 4.

midnightmisssuki · 03/01/2020 21:03

A bit more than that - 4 adults and 2 kids. We bought a lot of booze.

You managed to buy gifts for so many people with that budget?!

PooWillyBumBum · 03/01/2020 21:08

£600

Including:
A Christmas pub meal with family
Gifts for DD (11) - last year we paid for her school ski trip which was £2k alone!
Gifts for DH - new running shoes, bourbon, pants and socks
Gifts for me - DH got me a candle making kit(!?) and a new kindle
A painting for in laws
Gift voucher (£50 for local South Indian restaurant) for other set of parents
A book for our friend
Few “let’s catch up at Xmas” drinks out

Food for the day (nothing fancy, veggie sausage rolls, Lidl 15p veg, stuffing, à ready made pudding etc)

This year we got all our wine free with air miles collected through DH’s work. I’m pregnant so lots of it was gifted and still about 10 bottles left.

PooWillyBumBum · 03/01/2020 21:10

Meant to say DDs gifts were under £60 this year but she was thrilled with them all. If she wants something in particular next year we are likely to spend more but she wanted anime comics and Harry Potter PJs si that’s what she got!

BelleSausage · 03/01/2020 21:12

£600 all tightly budgeted before Dec- for the first time ever.

That’s all presents (big family), a drinks party, Boxing Day buffet for 8 and food for the week.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 03/01/2020 21:15

Our Christmas gifts - 500. That includes for me and dh and the kids, plus family.

Dds bday (a few days before christmas) 100

Turkey- 30
Bit of booze and nibbles for dh and I - 40

Works Christmas night out each for dh and I total - 100

So 770.

We don't entertain for others. And we don't celebrate NYE.

CakeandCustard28 · 03/01/2020 21:23

Christmas gifts roughly - £1,000 (but was brought over the course of a few months and includes everyone even me)
Dinner for 9 days of hosting with ILs and Xmas, boxing, New Year’s Day dinners - £400
I feel a bit sick after reading that. Blush Hopefully next December will be cheaper!

Ivebeentohellanditscalledikea · 03/01/2020 21:24

About £20 for presents and a few bits of food. We go to family for Christmas so don't have much food to buy.

Ivebeentohellanditscalledikea · 03/01/2020 21:24

£200 not £20

BF888 · 03/01/2020 21:27

Christmas food/nibbles- £350, there was no alcohol as we are none drinkers, and no Christmas meat as I wasn’t hosting and Don’t eat it. Did include general shop for the week.

Christmas gifts - £870, I don’t have kids but spend on my nieces, mum, brother and partner and friends.

Christmas outfits/get togethers - £420

Business expense of of Christmas cards & gifts & courier for some of my clients - just under £300

Oliversmumsarmy · 03/01/2020 21:28

Probably around £400 on presents, £140 on food and drink. (Slowly working my way through the 25 bottles of Schloer Dp and Dd bought) and very little else

We have all been so ill we have loads of food left.
What we could we froze.

Still haven’t finished the dozen mince pies bought on the 18th

chugmonkey · 03/01/2020 21:28

We had a budget of £1k saved for a family of five ( kids 14, 12 + 9). That's all food, gifts for 11 people outside the household as well as us. Food lasted until new year and included party food for Christmas Eve for 8. We don't drink though so alcohol isn't a cost.

GreaterSpottedFemale · 03/01/2020 21:31

I haven't calculated... I don't wanna know!

It's a lot though. If I worked it out I know it would make me feel nauseous 🤢

Hahaha88 · 03/01/2020 21:32

Who cares? You spent what you could afford, I spent what I could, and so on. Would it make you feel poor if we all said we'd spent a minimum of £1000 on gifts alone? Or would it make you feel good for being on a tighter budget? I just don't get what the point of this thread is. And all that aside wtf knows exactly, to the penny, how much they spent on everything Christmas related as well as the exact weights of the meat joints they purchased?? Hmm

Halleli · 03/01/2020 21:32

£600.

Don’t celebrate Christmas, as we’re Jewish, but that includes Hanukkah gifts for the dc and nieces/nephews plus a massive Chinese order on 25th Dec for 18 people.

Morgan12 · 03/01/2020 21:34

£850 on gifts.

£100 on food.

£100 for our annual friends day out.

£150 on days out with the kids.

An uncalculated amount that I never want to know on Justeat 😂

Igottastartthinkingbee · 03/01/2020 21:35

Presents for everyone came to £600. We didn’t cater at Christmas but took contribution to family that probably came to about £50. Also catered on NYE for a few folks but that again was probably only about £50 as various people brought beers/snacks. However we did do a few Christmassy days out which would have come to something like £250. A lot when you tot it all up!

flowerycurtain · 03/01/2020 21:36

£1500.

£300 kids presents. Includes a musical instrument that was £200 of that.

£100 turkey
£30 Gammon
£300 other food (crisps, posh nuts, 1kg salmon, stuffing, veg, puddings etc?
£200 booze

£600 gifts on others. £100 to each set of parents. Then 3 nephews, 3 godchildren, 1 sister with no kids. God children got tickets to a play this year that was a lot more than I'd normally spend.

We had 12 for Xmas day and 8 for Boxing Day. I also have 3 turkey pies in the freezer and a lot of cheese left over!

Junie70 · 03/01/2020 21:37

Around £1500, £1k on presents and £500 on food/drink.

Have already done a £160 food shop since and fridge is empty........

YummyChipCurryDip · 03/01/2020 21:37

From 23rd to 27th food drink and presents for 5 people £200. All vegetarians and moderate drinkers. A few bottles of beer and a couple of wine. All adults.

DragonMamma · 03/01/2020 21:41

About £300 for each of the DC. Another £250 on my parents, £250 on DH (and probably the same for DH on me). £150 on ‘other’ presents for people. £40 on having my Christmas lights put up. £60 on a tree.

Then there was about £350-400 on food and booze.

That doesn’t include the Christmas parties and outfits, plus spends and taxis.

Confused
goodwinter · 03/01/2020 21:42

Maybe £150-200? Christmas dinner and snack food for me, my partner, my mum and 2 brothers. Presents for same (presents for mum were handmade).

Waxonwaxoff0 · 03/01/2020 21:45

Less than £400 in total. Spent around £300 on gifts and cards. I didn't host, spent Christmas at my mum's so just took round some bottles/chocolates/cheeses.

Earslaps · 03/01/2020 21:49

We save throughout the year for a Christmas budget of £1000. We spent nearly £800 on presents for everyone, then about £100 on alcohol. We went to MIL's for Christmas and I did all the cooking so she was happy to provide food. Friends here for New Year's Eve so we spent £30 on pizzas and snacks.

OverByYer · 03/01/2020 21:51

About £800 on presents
About £100 on food and drinks for Xmas eve party
£30 on pudding and wine for Xmas day ( Mum cooked)
