To pop over with a bag of haribo?

We live in a cul de sac, fairly quiet. We got a card from one of the other families in the street while we were away at Xmas. It was addressed to our house number as I've only spoken with the dad once when I collected a parcel. Anyways, we both have young DC and I'd like to say thanks for the card, HNY and we should have a cuppa or something sometime. I've bought a bag of haribo for their kids as I feel weird going over empty handed but I'm not sure I should've gotten something like adult chocolates or something. However I dont want to embarrass them by returning chocolates for a card. For all I know theyve sent the whole cul de sac a card but nonetheless, I still think it's a nice opportunity to extend a friendly hand and get to know our neighbours. I just dont know if Haribos were the right choice...?

YABU: Bloody hell! You really think theyll want to be friends when you've got their kids tanked up on sugar and additives?!

YANBU: Its fine! It's just something to say thanks and we both have kids - let's have a cup of tea together sometime

You could always swap the haribo for reduced sugar randoms instead if you didn't want to be so controversial but I adore haribo as do my kids.

Do it, it may come to nothing or you may have found a new friend. You have nothing to lose either way.

It's amazing how we have all become so paranoid we don't know if we should say hello to the neighbours! Of course go say hello. Take the haribo if you want but it's not necessary. No one's going to think you are crazy for introducing yourself!?

EatItWithYourHands · 03/01/2020 12:49

@Silverservice1011 lol! Yeah, it sounds mad! But it's not the saying hello so much but the haribos - like maybe they're super healthy low sugar "only carrot sticks for snacks" type people... (which I definitely am NOT!)

Take them. They will accept them either way. We don't eat gelatine but wouldn't be rude and say no thank you. I would re gift them to someone else but be very greatful that you thought and cared enough

Noideawhatusername · 03/01/2020 12:58

Yes bring the Haribos. That is a kind, friendly gesture.

Marriedtoapenguin · 03/01/2020 13:00

Anyone who takes the hump with haribos really isn't worth the effort. So take them.

EatItWithYourHands · 03/01/2020 13:25

Thanks all! I'll do it this weekend Grin

My only comment about haribo is they're not vegetarian as they contain gelatine so if they're vegetarian they won't be suitable. So sweets not containing gelatine might be a better idea.

But yes say hello to your neighbours - that's a very nice thing to do.

CripsSandwiches · 03/01/2020 13:47

I think it's a nice thing to do. It's nice to extend the offer of friendship then they can take it or leave it.

WhatAGreatDay · 03/01/2020 13:47

We're vegetarian so don't eat Haribos. We would probably accept them and then give them away to someone else.

They only put around a Christmas Card. It doesn't really require a particular" thank you" visit and a present.

NewNameGuy · 03/01/2020 13:48

I'll have the haribo if they get refused

MrsPnut · 03/01/2020 14:21

Jelly tots are vegetarian!

EatItWithYourHands · 03/01/2020 14:52

@WhatAGreatDay of course it doesnt! By no means am I suggesting xmas cards require a thank you visit and a present but it gives me a reason to knock on their door, introduce myself properly and do something (hopefully) nice in return Smile

Thanks for the comments re the veggie sweets! I'll see what I can do but I'm also mindful of leaving it too long before I pop over

I think it’s a lovely idea but would probably go without haribo or any kind of sweets.

StrawberrySquash · 03/01/2020 20:51

Jelly tots are vegetarian!
Oh, is that why the texture's gone all funny of late? I used to love the hard chewiness
