AIBU?

To expect people to drive in the correct lane on the motorway?

Drove back from Yorkshire today - 250 miles, most of it on the M1.

Couldn't believe how many people seem incapable of driving in the correct lane - often there was a virtually empty inside lane, then the traffic was all stacked up in the outer two lanes.

What's that all about? Is it because there's a lorry about a mile and a half ahead that you might have to pass in a couple of minutes, so they just sit in the middle lane instead to save having to actually steer the car?

Or is there an invisible force field surrounding the inside lane that only certain cars can break through?

Grr, bloody idiot drivers.

And don't get me started on how many knobheads still use their mobiles whilst driving...

Sorry, but I repeat, box junctions are no longer prescribed - old ones still in existence are not enforced. Can't join you with that one

Will assist with castration for signalling offences though.

In the same vein didn't you know that the zig-zags outside schools are so you know where to park your car so you can get as close as possible?

LL - didn't you know that BMWs aren't fitted with indicators??

WRONG Sidge. School Zigzag markings are specifically for owners of BMWs, Mercedes and 4x4s to park close to the school gates. They don't apply to other vehicles

You could have parked on the zig-zags LL

winestein - what about the ruddy great KEEP CLEAR thingies - are they figments of our imagination too?

And re. yellow boxes - are we just allowed to hang around randomly in the middle of juncions when we want to turn right now?

Genuine (if slightly inebriated) questions.

Winestein - not strictly true. They do apply to all vehicles but as BMWs, Mercs and 4x4s nip in without indicating no-one else can get near

PW - Keep clear markings don't have a Traffic Regulation Order attached to them so they are not enforceable. They are more advice, along the lines of the Highway Code.

As for yellow box markings, they are no longer used. Old ones are not really enforced - they never really were which is why they are no longer prescribed. If you are turning right, you have a right to be in it. But you can't wait behind a right turner as I understand it (without trawling through the Signs archives anyway)

Ha ha Sidge

Doodle, off the top of my head they were not included in the 2002 regulations. It's possible that the road they are on is not highway if it was part of a supermarket development, and they can do what they like if it's not highway.

(Although I am now wondering whether they are in the regs but can't be supported by Orders. Must check tomorrow when I have had less wine )

Well, I'll eat my hat and my words

Yellow box markings are still there and associated with Orders. No one I work with uses them any more, but that must be a local thing.

Oh, winestein

(deflates balloon)

You were my go-to woman for traffic regs. Who will I direct my insanely arcane questions to now?

Report
winestein · 27/08/2007 23:18

seemingly you can Doodle

You won't find a self respecting Police Officer enforcing it though, so you may have to vent alongside people who get mad about Parent and Toddler spaces

Nope.
Am consulatant in all things Traffic and Safety. But not yellow boxes. I just take wild guesses where they are concerned

(Wonky - on the other thread you used some big words what confused me....you did mean the pharse should be "none of us ARE idiots" and not "none of us IS idiots" didn't you?)

(Jeremy - sort of. Just meant that the most up-to-date advice I have from the people with big foreheads at the OUP is that either can be used. And also, fick is someone who likes to correct other people without actually being correct herself. That's what it says on the OUP website, anyway.)
