Help. Dog is acting like a toddler

Can’t sleep as my dog is hyper. Has been up all night and just keeps coming and trying to lick my head and my hands etc and if I don’t give her attention she’s pawing at me and whining and panting in my ear and driving me nuts. 4am and I haven’t slept a wink because of her. Love her to pieces so not kicking her out of the bed but how the hell do I calm her down??? Tried giving her a tight hug so she’s closed in which worked for about. 30 seconds but don’t know what else to do 😂

Could she be trying to tell you about something downstairs?

Brenna24 · 03/01/2020 04:14

Does she need a pee, is there a strange noise downstairs, could she be in pain/have a sore tummy?

Sparkle2020 · 03/01/2020 04:15

@afterschoolworry doubt it it’s been 4 hours since we came to bed. All I can think is there was a big house fire a few doors down last night and we had to evacuate the street for a few hours so I don’t know if that’s bothering her?

@Brenna24 could be sore tummy maybe? Had my mum over today and she tends to feed her a lot of human food when I’m not looking :/ she’s freaking me out a bit

I had to use crates when my dogs were younger as they wouldn't settle otherwise. Once they turned 18 months or so, they'd sleep anywhere, but letting then on the bed as youngsters would have meant no sleep for anyone . If your dog is still a pup/youngster, it won't understand that it's supposed to be settling down. After all, the fun human is right there, awake and available. Id rethink the sleeping arrangement as a kindness to you both. They really do fare better with clear boundaries IME

Sparkle2020 · 03/01/2020 04:20

@mummaofmytribe she’s 4 and has always slept on my bed. Usually is a great little sleeper

I would take her out for a wee and then try to settle again. When our puppy thinks it’s time to get up and it very much isn’t then turning my back to him usually works. Even if that means turning your back five times!

twinnywinny14 · 03/01/2020 04:22

Mine are up and down tonight too. They sleep in the kitchen but I can hear them moving around and crying and barking

Sparkle2020 · 03/01/2020 04:24

It’s so distracting isn’t it @twinnywinny14 luckily I’m off tomorrow so can just have a nap later but I’m really on edge lol

All I can think is that the fire next door was an arson so there’s police 24/7 with their headlights on and that might be frustrating her because she doesn’t like cars in the street? But I don’t know

New Year can be a disturbing time for dogs also if there have been fireworks, lots of strange voices late at night etc. Take her for a wee, and cross your fingers she'll conk out. Good luck

PentreBachCymraeg · 03/01/2020 04:38

Could it be a combination of the goings on in the street/NYE fireworks and she's on extra protective mode/anxious?

Sparkle2020 · 03/01/2020 04:50

Got her a drink of water and let her potter about for a bit and now she’s gone to sleep. Thank god 😂

My dog does this from tine to time. Usually a quick patrol of the house and garden settles him.
