AIBU to think that black current juice is making her wet herself!

DD6 normally only drinks water and milk and has no daytime wetting issues.

Very occasionally she will go to a birthday party where squash is available. She has come home in the past having wet herself there or has wet herself after coming home.

This hasn’t happened in over a year but a few days ago she went to a friend’s birthday party (the friend is one of those unfortunate Christmas-Day births, so has her party on the Saturday afterwards). She OD’d on black current fruit shoots, had two accidents after getting home and wet the bed too.

She hasn’t had anything but water and milk since and hasn’t had any further problems.

Is there something in blackcurrent juice that causes this?

Not seeking advice as the clear advice is to avoid the stuff- which we do!

I’m just wondering if this is some ingredient in the squash that causes it?

I have no idea if it affects children this young - but I have had to give up aspartame and AceK due to bladder issues. They are known bladder irritants and if you are susceptible it can have a really bad effect. I'm not saying it is this but might be worth looking into? And many "full sugar" versions also have sweeteners added.

Is she , maybe, trying to hold it in because she doesn’t want to use the toilet while she’s at the party?
Or is she having too much fun and is forgetting to go to the toilet?

Skyejuly · 02/01/2020 13:14

My child saw a specialist and they said avoid blackcurrant if you have bladder issues as it can irritate.

Evilspiritgin · 02/01/2020 13:15

Orange barley water used to make me wet myself/ bed whenever I had it as a child, so I can see it happening with other juice

Thingsthatgo · 02/01/2020 13:15

Black currant is a diuretic. I don’t give it to my kids before bed.

Love51 · 02/01/2020 13:16

Avoiding blackcurrant is fairly standard enuresis clinic advice. I've no idea of the science behind it, but it is specifically blackcurrant ( not orange squash, apple juice, lemonade etc).

Stegasaurusmum · 02/01/2020 13:17

Dd wet the bed until recently, we were under the nurse to help it, she was 9 when it stopped, we were advised no dark drinks, at all if possible, certainly not before bed, so blackcurrant, tea, coke etc.
So yes, avoid it!
DD is fine now, probably only happens once every few months, if she's v tired.

ifancyagreencard · 02/01/2020 13:17

Blackcurrant was always an accident trigger for DS . . . . we didn't ban it (eg at parties) but stopped having at available at home.

altiara · 02/01/2020 13:19

Yes known problem with blackcurrent squash.

MrsWombat · 02/01/2020 13:21

It's certainly connected to bedwetting as it's one of the drinks kids are told to avoid.

Noodledoodledoo · 02/01/2020 13:22

Another one here with anecdotale evidence of increased toilet visits after a purple fruit shoot for both my children!

Useful22 · 02/01/2020 13:25

We have the same issue with my 3 year old after any fruit shoot, not just dark ones. Glad we aren't the only ones! No idea why fruit shoot, it's not sweetners as we have the fruit only ones. Other juices don't cause this issue.

HopefulFor2020 · 02/01/2020 13:26

Yep, bedwetting clinic told us to avoid blackcurrant anything as well as caffeine and fizzy drinks. Not that it's made much difference here! 9.5yrs old and still wet more nights than not

eveshopper · 02/01/2020 13:32

Yes!! Definitely the blackcurrant juice!

DearTeddyRobinson · 02/01/2020 13:35

Yes! If either of mine have ribena, fruit shoot etc, they are weeing so much more frequently. I really only noticed it when I potty trained DC1, the difference in the number of accidents when he just had water or milk was astonishing

nimski · 02/01/2020 13:37

Yes, my daughter has bladder issues and the specialists all advise against any juice with blackcurrant in.

HotPenguin · 02/01/2020 13:38

My son had wetting problems which seemed to be caused by artificial sweetener, we were told by doctor it can cause bladder spasms if you are sensitive to it

Beautiful3 · 02/01/2020 14:07

She's probably having so much fun at the party that she doesnt want to go to the toilet, so has an accident.

Cotswolds10 · 02/01/2020 14:12

Yep, as others have said, it’s a diuretic and is advised against for bed wetting etc so it could well have been her problem on that particular day.

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 02/01/2020 14:14

Go on the ERIC site for a list of bladder irritants

MintyMabel · 02/01/2020 14:28

Could also be that she drinks more of it than water. And as someone suggested, that she isn’t using the toilet at the party when she needs to.

BlackeyedSusan · 02/01/2020 14:29

Told by specialist not to have orange juice or blackcurrant squash.

CottonSock · 02/01/2020 14:30

I didn't know this!
Would have assumed they drunk more due to what was available
