To be disappointed in my family

I'm a single mum and have had to work a solid week starting Christmas Eve. My eldest dd went to her boyfriends family, youngest dd went to her dad for the week and my son has split his time between here and his girlfriend.

On to where I'm peeved, I have 3 sisters, all of whom are happily married and have children with them full time. I'm always the one that phones them. I tried phoning my elder dsis a week ago, she didn't answer but messaged to ask if I was ok, I told her I wasn't doing great and she didn't call me back. Am I being ridiculous at my great age to be upset that none of them bothered over the holiday to call me or directly message me? Especially as at least one of them knows I was having a hard time?

The one I called is the one I'm closest too. Historically I've phoned them all at Christmas and at midnight on New Years. None of us live close to each other but they all knew I was alone. One of the ones who had a party has invited me in the past and I've travelled to her even though she's several hours away. She stayed with me for a visit in November. I don't think it's even emotional support I was hoping for, just a short phone call on either occasion. Just makes it seem that none of them give a shit about me at all

Why are you always expected to work over Christmas? Isn't there a rota?

EntropyRising · 02/01/2020 08:32

That's terribly shit and I'm sorry to hear this OP.

I would have definitely checked in/tried to get you over to mine or me to yours.

Yeah they sound a bit crap and self absorbed. I get the stress of Christmas as a single parent and the added stress of having to work over that period too. I was a single parent and a nurse for many years. Childcare is pretty much non existent over Christmas and New Year.
Sometimes family forget to actually behave like family unfortunately.
I hope you are ok.

My shifts are on a rota, I book leave every other year for Christmas 15 months in advance. I work in the emergency services so I knew I'd have to work it forever more

Ah. Apologies, I get it now.

Yes your family are unkind and thoughtless. Are you able to have a frank conversation?
