To be seriously concerned at DH health

DH is asleep next to me. He's not snoring but I can hear him breathing.

Every few minutes his breathing goes quiet and then starts again. It's like he's literally stopping breathing!

This is so scary Sad

My husband had this and turned out to have severe sleep apnoea where you stop breathing. He had sleep studies and now uses a cpap machine at night and is under a respiratory consultant. He felt so tired before diagnosis and was also stopping breathing. It's changed his life being diagnosed

isitjustmine · 02/01/2020 00:21

@iwantomountchrispratt Bloody hell its frightening. I've mentioned it briefly before but he didn't take me seriously! Definitely going to get on to him tomorrow about it.

Was just going to say he needs to be checked for sleep apnea.

isitjustmine · 02/01/2020 00:22

He can be a terrible snorer too. He's not snored for a while but his breathing while sleeping is loud at the moment and the pauses in breathing are very noticeable.

Does he seem like he's struggling for his breath during his sleep at times too? That's another sign of apnoea

isitjustmine · 02/01/2020 00:26

@Danni12 Nope not really! It's the pauses and how loud it can be that concerns me

I would agree, sounds like sleep apnoea. Would definitely recommend a trip to the GP. Sorry to ask a personal question, but is your DH overweight? This can make it worse, so if he is one remedy can be losing weight.

Gingernaut · 02/01/2020 00:29

Record him and play it back.

He needs to see a doctor for a referral to a sleep clinic.

Is he overweight?

isitjustmine · 02/01/2020 00:30

He has packed more weight on in the last 12 months or so yes.

Didn't think of recording him, that's a good idea!

Hubby was a dreadful snorer also. I bet anything he has sleep apnoea

iwantomountchrispratt · 02/01/2020 00:34

Without the machine I can hear him stopping breathing and then gasping after a couple of seconds he also felt very tired after a full night before diagnosis. Also be aware that it's reportable to DVLA his machine uses our WiFi to send the data to Phillips who analyse it and send it to the Hospital. They can see if he has been using his machine, if he hasn't they can report to DVLA

Emmelina · 02/01/2020 00:48

I agree with others, record it.
Then DH might concede a medical opinion is necessary, and it’s also evidence of what’s happening for the GP too!

managedmis · 02/01/2020 00:50

The weight will make a difference.

Does he sometimes wake up really suddenly?

Gingernaut · 02/01/2020 11:46

How is he in the mornings?

As a PP has said, sleep apnoea is reportable to the DVLA, as it can cause exhaustion blackouts/loss of consciousness during the day.

AllergicToAMop · 02/01/2020 12:03

I had similar since I was a child. Everyone thought I stopped breathing but it just went shallow for a bit so people didn't register it. Watch his chest when this happens. Used to freak my boyfriends out with it. Many times I was woken up by the person next to me because "OMG you stopped breathing"😂
