Meat and potato pie recipe help

I asked my DGF what he wanted for his birthday and he wants me to make him meat and potato pie like my DGM used to make. I’m veggie and have no idea how to cook this. All I can tell you is what he told me. It had pastry on top, was made of shin beef and potatoes. It probably had onions but no other vegetables. My DGM was Irish and lived all her life in Lancashire so if you’re from those areas you might have a similar family recipe. She’s been dead for 30 years and I have only the vaguest memory of eating this as a child. Thanks if you can help!

If you try googling meat and potato pie loads of recipes come up.

FabTab · 01/01/2020 20:06

Thanks @Lockheart have done that - probably should have said but nothing seems to match the description DGF gave. Was hoping someone from Lancashire might recognise what I’d described and be able to help.

This is the sort of thing you are looking for. Whatever cut of beef you use, it needs to be simmered for hours until tender, or you could do it in a slow cooker. You'll probably not need as much pastry if he just wants it on top.

Ask him if he wants gravy in the pie, if not, you can probably just cook the meat in as little gravy as possible and just try to spoon the meat, potatoes and onions out of the cooking liquid.

Chop up the meat (cheap cut with a high fat content usually) into small pieces and slow cook in gravy. Dice the potatoes into pieces the same size and cook separately until just softened. Drain potatoes. I mix the meat and potatoes, other people layer them. I also add a little brown sauce and pepper to season. Put that in the pie dish and make rough puff pastry. Cover. Cook on a low heat until pastry is brown.

Hope that helps. Though it is a Yorkshire recipe rather than Lancashire.

i really want meat and potato pie now, with brown sauce!

Thanks everyone. If anyone else has a recipe I’ll show them all to DGF and get him to pick what sounds most similar.

Er yum, M&P pie is the easiest thing in the world to make (one of the few things I miss since going veggie).

It's only got 3 ingredients, fry them up then add water/stock and simmer for about 4 hours - stick on a pastry lid if you're being posh - job done!

Minced beef
Maris Pipers
White Onions

Lots of salt and pepper (Worcester sauce is also great for extra kick).

It shouldn't be too wet with gravy, more a solid mush.

Serve with picked red cabbage - that's the Lancashire way!

Skirt beef cooked long and slow makes a very tasty meat and gravy - as does shin of beef . I’d suggest you do the meat with onions and stick the day before as that makes a difference . Shortcrust pastry is the best for the top . You’re a heroine to be making this as yours a vegetarian x

Ye Gods!!
It's got to be shin of beef or skirt, gently simmered for hours or done in the slow cooker.
I agree about the red cabbage though.
I'm from Wigan, home of pies.

Oh goodness, DH was from Lancashire and I had to ask his DM for the recipe as he asked me to make it.
I used to fry stewing beef and onions and then add diced potatoes, and simmer gently in Oxo stock with salt and pepper until the potatoes were just done.
Tip into a pie dish and cover with shortcrust pastry. Bake in the oven till pastry is cooked.

FabTab · 01/01/2020 22:10

Thanks again. Spoke to DGF and apparently the meat was definitely not minced and was about the size of two jelly cubes.

And he always had to have pickled red cabbage with it, and also with Lancashire hotpot!
