To ask DH to sell 'his' car?

We have 3 cars.

A salary sacrifice car in my name, which is our main commuting car.

An ancient diesel which we use to go to the dump or for DH to go metal detecting (basically falling apart but still road worthy so useful for mucky jobs).

3rd one is an executive car (let's say), that we have had for 10 years. I want to sell it but DH refuses to entertain the idea. He says he bought it to be his retirement car, but we won't be retiring for at least another 10 years. The car is currently off the road, untaxed, un MOTd and the battery is in the garage. It's going green as its covered in leaves, algae, dirt etc. Its an aluminium body so isn't rusting but the parts under the bodywork will be.

In the spring we are due to have a new driveway laid so we will have to move the cars on to the road for around 4 weeks while the work is done I have 2 visitors permits so we can park 2 cars in the street, but there will be nowhere to park car 3.

In addition, in order to move a car out if we want the one furthest from the gate, we have to shuffle the cars around as we can only get one car out at a time. If we had 2 cars, we could move each one out independently of the other.

Can anyone out there explain to me why we should not get rid of car 3. No reason why it has to be his executive one (other than he never uses it, as he's either commuting on the train, or using one of the other 2 cars). Is there any reason at all why he is so insistent on keeping the exec car? I just need an objective reason for keeping all 3 cars, when we in reality only need 1 really.

Without an MOT you can only drive to a pre booked MOt appointment. So if it fails he cant just drive it home to sit on the drive again.

will you be able to sell it, or more likely to have to pay to have it towed away?

An XJ that he's keeping for his retirement that you've had for 10 years and he doesn't retire for another 10 years? It's at least a 10 year old XJ now, so worth what 5 grand? In another 10 years you'd have to pay someone to take it away.

Our neighbour has a 12 year old one and bought it for just about 4 grand.

If the exec is what I think it is (Jaguar XJ 350, 2003-2009) then I think you may have to spend £000s getting it back to where you'd need it to be.

Personally I'd sell it and I don't think YABU at all!

People used to say the same thing about my old Mini , which I admit I keep in good condition as I use it every day. But It's now worth more than DH boring Volvo tank thing ( optional turret ) . My big concern now is somebody taking it. I would urge your OH to get the Jaguar back on the road and start using it, they last longer if you do. Buy him Jag owners club membership for his birthday.

What? Surplus cars? 10 years of looking at 1 rot? No. YANBU at all.

ILoveJoeBrown · 09/01/2020 19:06

We have apparently had a visitor today. Someone knocked on the door - DS22 answered and they asked if the Jag was for sale as they had seen it several times and noticed it's dirty and not moving! Did DS22 take their contact details - NO - chump!

SELL IT! If they come back when I'm in, I'll take the money and be shot of it.... haven't actually told DH of the visit yet...

This thread is literally the story of my life, except we have four cars (including a tip run car!) and the exec car isn't all that exec (BMW 7 series) but DH loves it and can't bear to part with it!! I can relate to how you feel whole heartedly OP, I cringe every single time I pull on to the drive and see the other three cars sitting there taking up space on the drive 😖
