To not understand why they can't just make fireworks that don't BANG!

Just that really. Sitting here listening to the ridiculously LOUD banging, praying my 1 year old doesn't wake up and thinking about all the absolutely terrified animals up and down the country and thinking WHY DO THE SODDING THINGS HAVE TO BANG? Surely they could just make pretty patterns in the sky, maybe even some whooshing sounds, without the need for the flipping deafening bang?

Oh, and HAPPY NEW YEAR all Crown Grin I'm off to my bed...

You can get 'silent' fireworks which are far quieter and just as colourful. Our local wildlife park uses them at the end of their late summer night events.

No, Australia. Here if you want to see fireworks you have to travel to the city. And they are only held on formal occasions ie New Year's Eve, Australia Day, and at the local shows. No ordinary citizen is allowed to purchase or possess fireworks, it's only corporations and local authorities that can. The closest legal thing to fireworks here, is the traditional sparkler stick.

Aragog · 01/01/2020 16:40

Rural areas do not have New Year's Eve fireworks, only the cities do.

Lots of rural places still have fireworks on NYE! They might not have a large scale public show like the seen in some large =e cities, but many have smaller scale shows or even people buying their own for their own fields and gardens.

The rural place you live in may not have them, but it doesn't mean all rural places are the same!

FWIW I dont actually think the general public should be allowed to purchase fireworks, especially the large, and often loudest, ones. They should be for properly organised and licensed events only.

Cornettoninja · 01/01/2020 16:41

@sarahnade - well it would seem you’ve waded into a debate with no understanding of what people are talking about. I love a good organised firework display but in the UK private individuals buy their own and can let them off pretty much whenever they like.

Why don’t you go on google earth and look up an average sized UK town - note the size of the gardens and imagine bangers going off in random gardens intermittently through an evening until early morning.

Aragog · 01/01/2020 16:41

Ah, x posts. In the Uk we have no such restrictions on the purchase of fireworks and where the fireworks can be let off.

SarahNade · 01/01/2020 16:46

I honestly did not know anyone can buy fireworks in the UK. So I learned something today. It's shocking though that people can just go and buy explosives like fireworks, anyone could get hurt if done in a suburban or rural back yard.

Cornettoninja · 01/01/2020 16:51

Yup. Pretty much the only restrictions are around when they can be sold to the general public which I believe is October/November (for guy fawkes night - a celebration of the thwarting of a catholic terrorist if you want to get political) unless they have a special licence.

iklboo · 01/01/2020 17:21

@SarahNade - yep. Over here you can buy large fireworks in supermarkets. You used to be able to buy them from the corner shop & newsagents.

dognamedspot · 01/01/2020 17:51

My friend keeps her horses in a rural area. I got the call just after midnight yesterday. She had her horses in the stables, with the radio playing, the most nervous one lightly sedated... She was sat up there with them in case of problems... Then the house next door decided to loos chaos from their garden, with some of the rockets going over the yard. So the call was for me to rush down there to help with her year old horse that had been so terrified she'd fallen over in her stable and gashed her leg (we think with another hoof) all the way down her "thigh". We've been up half the night because ended up having to take her to the vet and leave her there. The bill will be at least £3k. Honestly, we were in tears.

Ohtherewearethen · 01/01/2020 18:09

What I find really wrong is that there is no opt-out for people and animals who hate the shitting things. You can stay at home to avoid crowds/festivities on NYE if you don't like all of that but even in your own home you cannot avoid the ridiculous noise made by fireworks. They were going off at ten to three this morning here and I live in a village! The sooner they are banned the better all round.

Intensicle · 01/01/2020 18:35

Your poor friend and her poor horse.

I’ve had to drug the dog again this evening. There have been fireworks going off from around 4pm.

breakfastpizza · 01/01/2020 18:44

YANBU. Also, why can't they sell weed that doesn't fucking reek??

Anniegetyourgun · 01/01/2020 18:55

And they frequently are.

dognamedspot · 02/01/2020 08:32

Update - there is a 50/50 chance that the baby horse will not get through this because the ligament has had to be repaired. The bill is now approaching £5k. The neighbours refuse to pay the excess. Once the insurance money runs out my friend will have to pay rehab costs etc (or the costs of having her put to sleep if it doesn't mend well) out of her own pocket. She bred this baby herself from a much loved mare who is no longer with us.
How anyone can justify these modern day loud fireworks being sold to the public to be used anywhere and any time they like is beyond me.

Hellokittymania · 02/01/2020 08:40

You are definitely, definitely, not being unreasonable. I can't stand fireworks because of the noise.

dog That is terrible. My yard has a six-month old foal who's just been weaned and the thought of anything like that happening to her is just awful... I'm praying for your friend and the horse.

HoppingPavlova · 02/01/2020 09:23

Yes, it is. Supposedly you can’t do that here, haven’t been able to do it for years. All fireworks displays must be licensed and with proper permits. It’s great as prior we would see all manner of injuries from them. Dickhead adults didn’t bother me so much but the kids with bits blown off, damaged eyes etc ......

Hasn’t gone away completely, as with everything there is always a black market for things not legal so there is still the odd dickhead here and there but you don’t see the injuries on the scale you did when anyone could buy them and set them off thank god.

Elphame · 02/01/2020 09:24

They've just got louder and louder over the years. They never used to be this bad. Our neighbour's display on NYE sounded like a war zone.

Luckily my dog is not scared of them.

Time to ban the things
