AIBU re: shorthand relatives names?

I just tried to read a thread with a fairly complex family dynamic. I don't mind the occasional DD or DH but when it gets to DSD and DexHS and all that nonsense i just have to give up.

I'm a bloke, I don't understand anything beyond 2nd degree relations nevermind having to translate them first.

Gosh you poor soul.

How taxing on your man-brain. Do you often find really simple concepts beyond you?

DramaAlpaca · 31/12/2019 19:01

Do a search for MN acronyms, there's a list somewhere on the site.

You'll pick them up eventually if you hang around on here long enough. The one that amused me most was 'DFish'. DDog and DCat get used a lot, but DFish was a new one.

Twospaniels · 31/12/2019 19:07

I feel the same as you TBH, and I’m female.

Also when people talk about friends A, B and C. If you don’t want to use real names just use other names like Jane, Karen and Clare or whatever.

MeetmeinParis · 31/12/2019 19:08

I hear you!

Sparklyring · 31/12/2019 19:09

Snap!

22Giraffes · 31/12/2019 19:24

You make a valid point but you will get shot down because you're a man

JigsawsAreInPieces · 31/12/2019 19:26

A man? On Mumsnet? 😱

Poor wee bairn. It's all going to be your fault before very long! Wink

missmouse101 · 31/12/2019 19:30

They drive me mental. I never use them, but write son or whatever instead.

ManiacalLapwing · 31/12/2019 19:33

DS is Dear Son.
DSis should be used for Dear Sister as DS is taken, okay.
I find it most confusing when DS is used for both.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 31/12/2019 19:36

I get confused where there are multiple DSILs and DBILs. Oh and of course all the DNs.

UnitedRoad · 31/12/2019 19:37

I don’t use them either. People use df for dear friend or dear father. Also I’ve seen stbexdh, which took me ages to decipher. Why on earth would they be dear anything if they’re nearly your ex?

Just out of interest do people say dear daughter in real life? I can think of lots of words to call mine, but never dear (apart from meaning expensive).

It’s all a bit twee for me.

andyjusthangingaround · 31/12/2019 19:40

@FixTheBone feel your pain OP...especially when some posters drip feed and the post is full with typos so you have no chance or get the picture just from the post... 😔😳

pemberleypearl · 31/12/2019 19:44

I agree. Too confusing!

ManiacalLapwing · 31/12/2019 19:47

If there is any ambiguity then spell it out. Alternatively, spell it out followed by the acronym in brackets the first time you use it in a post.

alibongo5 · 31/12/2019 19:56

I've never understood why it should be easier to write DS rather than son, for instance. I have always hated them. It's not as though we're limited in terms of character numbers.

SeagullOnTheWind · 31/12/2019 20:02

WTAF is DexHS

I hate the D prefix full stop but I use DD because those are what I have and it doesn't seem to stand for owt else. Ditto DC, because it seems to have one meaning. DP or OH. Mum, dad, MIL (not married but I've never seen a well known acronym for when you're not married). Pretty sure these are all I have ever and will ever use.

You have my sympathy. Yes, there's a list somewhere of what they all mean but sometimes people really do seem to take the absolute piss when they write.

FOTTFSOFTFOASM · 31/12/2019 20:04

Are you always this controlling, OP?

That aside, I completely agree with you. Life is far too short for all this crap. And I am female.

PeachCupcake · 31/12/2019 20:07

I hate them. I can’t get my head around them and I usually quit the thread

Newmetoday · 31/12/2019 20:09

Fucking hell. The man haters are out in force tonight

FOTTFSOFTFOASM · 31/12/2019 21:56

Should I have said "lighthearted" to the first bit of my previous post? I hope not, and that it was clear anyway, @Newmetoday

FixTheBone · 31/12/2019 22:17

I'm not that controlling, but at the end of a hard week I was trying to read a post that sounded interesting, but ended up like a technical paper.

And yes, a man on Mumsnet, mainly because dadsnet had about 4 users last time I checked.

DexHS is one I made up - dear ex husband's son/sister/secretary/solicitor.....

Glad to see the votes evened out and I'm not the only one puzzled by it though!
