To wish she'd stick to the cheap fizz?

My mum is a bit of a nightmare...long story...so I don't know if I'm getting to the point where her breathing annoys me, but she freely admits she can't tell the difference between a good champagne and cheap plonk.

So AIBU to think that when the good stuff comes out, she should stick to the cheap stuff (of which there is plenty) and leave the good stuff for the rest of us to actually appreciate?

Or am I just a mardy arse because she's been here 3 weeks and is slowly driving me insane?

Most people can't tell the cheap from the expensive.

It would be very mean to expect your mum to drink the cheap stuff. I'm sure you may not be able to tell either if you did a blind taste test.

...just keep drinking the champage OP...

I hear you. I remember pointing out the chocolates my dear old DD was ‘allowed’. He would just stick his hand in and take anything. The horror at him going for the caramel cup when he would have been just as happy with any old brazil nut nonsense.

WhereYouLeftIt · 31/12/2019 19:15

February? She's inviting herself until FEBRUARY? Do you need a hand digging the patio up by any chance? Grin

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 31/12/2019 19:22

This is absolutely the last tine she's staying with me, but that's a thread for another day.

February? Swap the fizz for gin.

CoffeeCoinneseur · 31/12/2019 19:30

YANBU.

My mum and SIL got one glass of Laurent Perrier on Christmas Day, and after that they were topped up with Cava. They didn't notice.

Me, DH and other SIL stuck to the good stuff. I would definitely notice the difference, and don't even get me started on the vile muck that is Prosecco Grin

DogInATent · 31/12/2019 19:42

After the first two mouthfuls no one can tell the difference between the really good stuff and the decent stuff.

Champagne for greets and midnight toast, swap everyone onto the prosecco inbetween.

AJPTaylor · 31/12/2019 20:16

3 weeks?

Cornish2 · 31/12/2019 20:21

One day you'll all wish you could have 3 weeks with your mum.

gamerchick · 31/12/2019 20:34

No, I won't.

Elbeagle · 31/12/2019 20:35

No, I will never wish I could have anyone staying with me in my house for 3 weeks.

Where is she from that she’s staying so long? And talking of staying til Feb? Just tell her no and give her a date for leaving ie tomorrow!

DuckWillow · 31/12/2019 21:03

Fuck...now I have to treat myself to a bottle of champagne to see if I can tell the difference between that and Prosecco. ..which I also like,

amusedbush · 31/12/2019 21:09

Crikey, I can tolerate my mum for however long it takes to eat a meal and then I’m out of there! Shock

PestyMachtubernahme · 31/12/2019 21:24

Agree with aroundtheworld

Aldi do blanc de blanc for £5.50 and cava for £5.30. They may be second best to Mumm www.thewhiskyexchange.com/p/21046/mumm-de-cramant-blanc-de-blancs-nv-champagne but not by much.

However, if you wish to project that you are better than your DM, carry on

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 31/12/2019 21:28

@PestyMachtubernahme who's projecting anything? I don't think I'm better than anyone. But given that my mum genuinely cannot tell the difference between £150 Cristal (which my brother bought for us) and £3.50 Cava then surely the good stuff is wasted on her? She doesn't enjoy get any more enjoyment from it.

My take is that most people can't tell the good stuff from the cheap stuff, including me sometimes.

Re prosecco Vs champagne, champagne just had that branding because it is grown in a certain part of France, that does not actually make it any better.

thenightsky · 31/12/2019 21:40

You've got cava for £3.50? Where? I love cava, but the cheapest own brand I've found is £5.45.

alwaysonadiet1 · 31/12/2019 23:27

Cornish2 best wishes to you Thanks

CurlyMango · 01/01/2020 11:07

Absolutely Cava for those that don’t tell.

shoofly · 01/01/2020 11:30

I'm grieving for my Mum, she died over a year ago but the family home was only sold at the end of November so it's a bit raw. I miss her to bits, but honestly if she'd been I my house for 3 weeks over Christmas one of us would've been done for murder. If you can top her up with the cheaper stuff without it being obvious or hurtful would. I think most of us can't tell the difference when we've had a few
