Yes, I saw that too!! How lovely of Lardlizard!!!

Winesalot

I’m so confused Grin you didn’t make that comment did you? I thought you only quoted it?

I do think you made an assumption regarding people’s opinions on this, for example regarding the fireworks cancelled near here - not a “small regional event” but a massive country show, which brings tourism over one day that pretty much supports the small market town in the off season. Economic impact has to be mitigated for sure, but it can be done.

Sorry, Winesalot - just saw your 'plop' post. Yes....Hmm

Penelope - just to clarify....yes, Smile, not you Smile

Downunderduchess · 01/01/2020 09:41

I’m in Sydney. Several areas around Sydney did cancel local fireworks. I do think they should have cancelled Sydney as well given the current situation. Though I don’t really care about them at any time, even less so at the moment. They did actually move the direction of some of the Sydney ones, to make sure they were only let off over water & stayed away from land. Everything is so dry here. And we do have a total fire ban so not sure why it’s ok to let off any fireworks, but money talks apparently & they generate tourism spending.

Winesalot · 01/01/2020 09:43

Jacques

I admitted that I added my thoughts to it for sure. I own it. And yes, economic impact is very important to consider and if your local area decided to cancel their show, that is a credit to them. I have always maintained that it was oversimplifying the situation to consider only one side of the argument.

But we will probably not agree, I have apologized for my snide addition to the comment. Shall we move on?

PenelopeFlintstone · 01/01/2020 09:44

I’m glad we don’t live there any more.
Cos no-one would ever say anything like this about Asian shopkeepers in the UK, right? Grin

Winesalot · 01/01/2020 09:45

No worries Penelope. I own up to adding to the ‘snide remark’ while not making it.

PenelopeFlintstone · 01/01/2020 09:46

Shall we move on?
Yeah, let's all be friends. I mean it! Smile
Let's hope for no more loss of life, loss of homes and wildlife, and most of all - lots and lots of rain!

Inliverpool1 · 01/01/2020 09:46

PenelopeFlintstone - I’ve never heard it so freely, openly, blantently said in the UK no
And utterly unchallenged - infact liked 😨

Winesalot · 01/01/2020 09:48

Penelope- Smile

RainbowSlide · 01/01/2020 09:49

Aussie mnetter here. I think it was in bad taste but the money was paid, the tourists had come, so it would have made a tangible difference to the bushfire response if it was cancelled. Other cities like wollongong cancelled theirs due to the fire danger.

PenelopeFlintstone · 01/01/2020 09:49

No worries Penelope. I own up to adding to the ‘snide remark’ while not making it.
It's so easy for threads to escalate. Don't worry, I got a flaming the other day on a thread about babies on planes Grin
I should've known better!!
Please don't add to it if you find it. It's embarrassing Grin Blush

JacquesHammer · 01/01/2020 09:49

But we will probably not agree, I have apologized for my snide addition to the comment. Shall we move on?

I’m still confused mainly because I don’t think you have anything to apologise for Grin

PenelopeFlintstone · 01/01/2020 09:51

And utterly unchallenged - infact liked 😨
It was challenged by someone in the very next comment, in the screenshot that you yourself posted.

differentnameforthis · 01/01/2020 09:53

@PenelopeFlintstone Then tell everyone to settle down, don't single out one post.

My comment was in reaction to someone saying that we shouldn't be celebrating right now. I just pointed out the many situations that could be used to stop any kind of celebration and asked that poster if they gave thought to any of them.

@midsummabreak funding redirected to support communities dealing with the devastating impact of the fires.

How? It had already been spent!

PenelopeFlintstone · 01/01/2020 09:55

I’ve never heard it so freely, openly, blantently said in the UK no
What?? Sure, sure.

WhatTheFronti · 01/01/2020 09:56

Why must every single discussion about/concerning Australia on mumsnet end up in slagging off or implying all most Aus are horrid racists....honestly thousands of people are volunteering, helping, risking their own bloody lives! Defending neighbours, strangers, towns and communities!!!
One dickhead makes a comment on Facebook - and that's it - a conversation about fireworks becomes the usual slagging.... honestly fucking depressing... on top of fucking depressing 😞

PenelopeFlintstone · 01/01/2020 09:58

Racism is everywhere. Not just Australia and not just the UK.

PenelopeFlintstone · 01/01/2020 09:59

Sorry, that was to Liverpool not Front.

PenelopeFlintstone · 01/01/2020 10:06

Or was it you that commented on her post, Liverpool?

Winesalot · 01/01/2020 10:16

Jacques

Confusion reigns then. Grin I realise that I am apologising because I said something that could have been misconstrued as being snarky about the fact the thread had started denigrating Australians. When my intention was to express frustration at someone who 'plopped and ran' about something that really is not a simple discussion.

Talk about socialisation to apologise!!! Now, there is a thread that probably has been done before...

PenelopeFlintstone · 01/01/2020 10:21

Confusion reigns then! It does!

PenelopeFlintstone · 01/01/2020 10:22

Or was it you that commented on her post, Liverpool?
Okay, I get it. Just ignore.
