New year round robin style Facebook cringe

DianneWhatcock · 31/12/2019 11:38

When people do like a review of their year that is basically a massive essay on how successful their years been all the highlights and how happy they are

My newsfeed is full of them 😳 Aibu to cringe at each and every one?

I have even done them myself in the past and this morning had to be faced with my past smugness on memories. God how I wanted to punch my past self. I will never do one again 😳😳

I mean don’t get me wrong ...I’m genuinely happy if people are happy and doing well had a great year etc... I just personally don’t see the need to smugly broadcast it to fb in essay form 🤦‍♀️

OP posts:
RedPanda2 · 31/12/2019 11:52

Aw I like reading them, we should be allowed to be proud of our achievements.
I do find other SM things cringey though

Blossomgate · 31/12/2019 12:00

Even worse, going back - I once printed and sent out a letter, including lots of ''cut and paste' photos of my Christmas with my two young DC'S ( jumpers, ice skating, mince pies, Santa..you name it).

HAHA, I cringe too thinking about it now.
My only defence is that my DH had left for his other woman and I suppose I felt I had something to prove!

DianneWhatcock · 31/12/2019 12:02

Oh I agree we should be proud of our achievements.

I've done well myself this year but ...I dunno ...I just wouldn't post on sm about it (although I have in the past)

OP posts:
Icecreambaby · 31/12/2019 12:08

If you have done that yourself before, why judge others now? Can't we be just happy for other people's success especially I presume you know those people too?

Techway · 31/12/2019 12:08

I suppose I felt I had something to prove!

This is what I think when I see these, loath them.Your family and close friends will know about your achievements or struggles so a broadcast to others outside this circle seems to be for an ego boast.

Do they think anyone is that interested?? It is the modern day equalvant of inviting people around to view your holiday snaps

antlady · 31/12/2019 12:14

haha OP I'm with you & love that a poster recognises

suppose I felt I had something to prove!

as that what others read it as.

I don't use fb anymore but strangely have never seen

2019, gained 4 stone, hate my husband & have only had sex twice, kids are dicks who try & kill each other daily & the office gossip keeps stealing my biscuits. Let's hope 2020 won't be so shite!

Progress2019 · 31/12/2019 12:22

I haven’t seen any posts from friends like this. Only a half one, and this is far more special. It says they were going to do a round up of the year, but were blessed to be able to say there were far too many wonderful things to list.

letmeinthroughyourwindow · 31/12/2019 12:46

I still get texts from 4pm onwards saying 'just wishing you a happy new year before the phone lines get busy.' Have the phone lines - or satellites now I suppose - ever crashed due to being too busy? Just tell me you're going out and cba texting later.

Dipsydoodle · 31/12/2019 12:52

It certainly used to be calls often wouldn't go through and texts were delayed at NY just after the bells. But this was about 10-15 years ago, I think the infrastructure is better now!

I don't really mind the FB stuff. I quite like reading them as it's easy to miss stuff that's happened in people's lives over the year.

nokidshere · 31/12/2019 13:22

Why do people care so much about what people post on social media? If you don't like it don't read it. Aren't they your friends?

I 'like' all my friends posts. That doesn't mean I read them, because most are just trivial nonsense but I click like and move on anyway. If it makes them happy it doesn't bother me.

antlady · 31/12/2019 13:28

You can say that about these threads though.... And no my friends don't do this. My friends also don't take duck faced selfies, post photos from accidents or tag themselves as safe if an incident occurs in an area they once visited 10 yrs ago. Doesn't mean it doesn't annoy me when others do though. I don't read the Daily Mail, I still can criticise the sidebar of shame.

ALLMYSmellySocks · 31/12/2019 13:32

YANBU. You can be proud of yourself without a public broadcast, the people who love you will k ow already and other people don't care. It does come across very much as image crafting rather than a genuine desire to share joy.

VodselForDinner · 31/12/2019 13:32

A friend does these but in a kind of cryptic way. They make me laugh and cringe. It’s all-

That night we danced until 4am under the eye of the town clock; drinks with R while the angels gazed on; fish and chips on the glacial ice of the desert; punk skirts in a haze of amber.

ivykaty44 · 31/12/2019 13:33

Choose your Facebook friends wisely

Pipstelle · 31/12/2019 13:37

I'd rather read someone's recap than a political post. I like knowing what people I wouldn't otherwise see are up to. We were once close but I've moved countries so the catch up is tough etc. I don't see it as smug. It's sharing and harmless. But if you want less facebook fiends why not be honest and comment on each on letting them know how smug and cringeworthy you find it? It would serve to whittle your list right done and be a more honest interaction.

PooWillyBumBum · 31/12/2019 13:42

They make me cringe a bit but I scroll by. I’ve only ever seen it done by slightly insecure people/those with something to prove.

The mega successful, really happily married close friends don’t seem to feel the same urge.

Bluewall · 31/12/2019 13:43

Keep seeing people doing 10 year challenge photos and seeming surprised that they looked 10 years younger 🤔🤪

PinkPomeranian · 31/12/2019 13:47

I love a round robin! I don't see (m)any of my school, uni or work friends on a regular basis now that we're all spread out and I'm a SAHM, and when we do meet up we all have our children in tow and don't catch up on the day to day. A few of us went to a christening recently and a friend was telling us about his upcoming exams - none of us knew he was even studying again, let alone what he was doing and where! My parents' friends still post printed round robins and I really look forward to reading what everyone's been up to and seeing photos of my childhood pals all grown up. If you don't like the Facebook updates, scroll on!

ShadowWeaver · 31/12/2019 13:49

I've done one today. This year I've finally gotten out of an unhappy relationship of about 10 years and met someone new who is just fantastic. I wrote a post thanking the friends who've helped me through it this last year. Cringe all you want but I'm happy for the first time in years and want to shout it from the rooftops.

ClashCityRocker · 31/12/2019 13:53

I've just had a look at my 'one this day' posts. Apparently I only stopped doing this two years ago 😂 😂

They are mostly along the lines of 'well, that was a shit year! Bring on 2012/2013/2014....' so mostly non braggy, but rather depressing.... 🙄

Welltroddenpath · 31/12/2019 13:53

I can’t stand FB since Brexit. It’s full of MIL ( not because she’s my mil, but because she’s far right) political posts which are utterly offensive.

I can’t post and just ignore her as she is hot on people posting but not interacting with her posts.

I hate FB generally. Some close relatives ignore my pictures of the kids bu they gush “stunning, beautiful, could be a model” about other kids. I’m sure it’s just a passive aggressive playground for some ( or my kids are indeed trolls 👹👹) my friends are fine, but it reminds me why I don’t see some family IRL

I like seeing people doing well and genuinely happy. Daily selfies of my sil in her undies? No thanks

PanicAndRun · 31/12/2019 13:57

Well i posted this as my NY resolutions so I expect a very braggy and smug post at the end of 2020 that I achieved them all. Grin

New year round robin style Facebook cringe
PanicAndRun · 31/12/2019 13:58

The spelling of night bugs me though. Maybe I should add don't post things with spelling mistakes even if you like them to the list.

ghostmouse · 31/12/2019 14:02

Shadowweaver

I also did this last year. I kicked out the ex, I lost weight, started a new hobby and met someone new. For the first year of my life I felt happy and I sang it all over fb.
When my memories pop up from previous years I realise just how unhappy I.really was. I like reading people's round robins

ShadowWeaver · 31/12/2019 14:13

Ghost mouse, it's a great feeling isn't it? You also learn who your friends are. My best friend since school was hardly anywhere to be seen this last year, yet a new friend I made in Feb has been there for me through it all.
