To want to declutter the whole house (including loft and garage)

Just that really. Always feel a bit stressed after Christmas at the amount of 'stuff'. Especially food. It makes me feel greedy.

I wanted to get cracking today, but will start tomorrow on the food cupboards and general glut of Christmas food and treats.

Igotthisjustabout · 30/12/2019 17:57

@Geepee71 I have just started on the food cupboards.
My husband wants to keep the Christmas day gravy (very bizarre) which will be thrown. We've just got back from the in-laws with a boot full of more stuff. I need to sort it out.

I normally take decs down on new years eve, go into the new year with a fresh (ish) house. This year DH wants to keep the decs up as we are having people over. Its driving me a bit mad. I really want to declutter!!

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 30/12/2019 18:05

I've tackled one of the bedrooms to make room for the new tat toys. Told DD if it doesn't fit in a box she will have to choose what to keep.

Tomorrow, whispers 'the cupboard on the landing ..l have to shut the door quick to stop the crap falling out

Igotthisjustabout · 30/12/2019 18:06

@ahhRats we took our decs down on new years day last year. They aren't bothering me so much as the toys. And all the art supplies Xmas Shock

You could do the minimalists thing.. Get rid of 1 thing on the 1st, 2 on the 2nd, 3 on the 3rd etc.

If you manage to keep it going for the whole of January you'll have got almost 500 'things' out of your house.

Igotthisjustabout · 30/12/2019 18:09

@LadyTiredWinterBottom2 haha, I like your style. Unfortunately, we'd need a box the size of a double bedroom to sort the toys!
I've asked DH to take DD out tomorrow so I can do charity shop and tip runs.
Gone are the days when I spent new years eve shopping for a new outfit and getting ready to go out! Xmas Grin

@SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing I like this idea. I'd probably drive around with it in the boot of my car until Easter, but a good idea!

I'm going to try it, at least for the first couple of weeks. Even if that just means wandering around the house with a bin bag looking for all the broken tat that's lying around

I'm in the process of this! Atm I am picking one thing a day to do and it is making it manageable because I'm not thinking of how much I still have to go! Yesterday I did good cupboards and freezer today I did DDs toys etc.

Myusername101 · 30/12/2019 18:14

Food cupboards not good cupboards Grin

Igotthisjustabout · 30/12/2019 18:14

I'm starting tonight. Fortunately have a hallway that can hold enough clutter ready to transport tomorrow. Have already done the towel cupboard. It's feeling good already.

I love it once it’s done but hate that horrific midpoint where there’s just stuff everywhere and it’s too late to turn back!

missyB1 · 30/12/2019 18:16

I’m with you! Took down the tree and decks yesterday, and chucked a few away that had seen better days. Cleared the fridge today. Planning the first of many trips to the charity shops on Thursday.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 30/12/2019 18:17

Watching! I need serious help in decluttering, I’m not very good at it.

dingdang · 30/12/2019 18:18

I've spent all weekend and today sorting cleaning and chucking stuff out/donate to charity - it's great now it's mostly done but a bit disheartening whilst in the process. Get some great tunes on and it makes it better!!

Geepee71 · 30/12/2019 18:19

I just need to get started, I'm ok once I make a start, she said from comfort of sofa!

dingdang · 30/12/2019 18:20

Still have the shed, under the stairs cupboard and my bedroom to do but sorted out the entire kitchen, dining room and two sideboards and a bureau which were packed with stuff.. feels very cathartic 😀

Igotthisjustabout · 30/12/2019 18:21

We have a very good air ambulance charity shop nearby (a previous Aldi store so really big) so I can take the nice stuff there. Tip for anything else. I don't like waste so hoping most gets reused / recycled.

Turn all winter clothes inside out. In June if any clothes are still like it. Charity shop. Do the same in June for summer clothes and charity any in December.

MrsMozartMkII · 30/12/2019 18:24

I've started! So much to do, so have tasked self with little steps - 15 minutes a day and even if no more for whatever reason then at least it's a bit done.

incogKNEEto · 30/12/2019 18:24

I'm with you too! I always get the urge to purge at this time of year!

So far I have tidied and de cluttered the utility room, although still have pantry to do.

Then DH and I went into the loft to find something (& found it!) and to put away the extra chairs...and I managed to start sorting out a few of the boxes we moved here in 2019...all done, and we removed all the empty boxes we have stored 'just in case' for the past 10 years Grin.

We have a huge pile of cardboard for recycling, a large bag for the charity shop and a massive throw away/tip trip pile (still in the loft at present but all in one heap!).

This year will be the year I declutter our whole house...

Igotthisjustabout · 30/12/2019 18:27

@Namethecat I like this idea. To be honest my clothes are quite minimal and sorted. It's just other stuff. We seemed to ha e acquired a lot of sweet and food containers over Christmas.

Moraxella · 30/12/2019 18:28

Me too, but I feel it should be done before 01/01/2020 or it’s bad luck.
