AIBU to think that some recordings are so perfect and iconic that they should not ever be covered by anyone else?

In this case, 'River' by Joni Mitchell.

By Brian Ferry (ffs)

Babybel90 · 30/12/2019 21:32

I much prefer Dolly Parton’s I will always love you to Whitney Houston’s, Whitney just belts it out, Dolly gives it feeling and authenticity.

I heard a cover of War Is Over the other day and it sounded just like the original except it was again being belted out, I mean why? Just why?

The same as when they remake a perfectly good film, what are you actually bringing to it, why not remake a shit film and try to improve it?

MattBerrysHair · 30/12/2019 21:32

Nobody seems to be able to do a great cover song anymore. In the 60's it was really common for groups to do a cover of a recently released song ie, Respect by Otis Redding being covered by Aretha Franklin. 'Artists' these days are so autotuned and overproduced that it kills the soul of any song covered.

Notthemessiah · 30/12/2019 21:35

Is it ok if it's the same artist that covers it? Because the acoustic version of Take on me which a-ha did recently is fantastic.

ChateauMyself · 30/12/2019 21:37

Every day’s a school day on here.

How the devil have I missed Mr Richard Cheese?

Many grateful thanks to the PP who mentioned him.

Itsigginingtolookalotlikexmas · 30/12/2019 21:38

What's that old song A-Ha covered? Crying in the rain? I really like that

CooCooCoo · 30/12/2019 21:41

No, Tony Hadley essentially covered himself once (maybe a few million times) doing Gold by Spandau Ballet and I dunno why he bothers doing all these re-arrangements (probably as not to be sued or something) Grin

Graphista · 30/12/2019 22:03

I’m torn, there are undoubtedly awful, cringe inducing covers out there but there are also some absolutely amazing ones better than the original.

Personally I hate when anyone TRIES to cover George Michael songs - it’s never been anything but a disaster so far! Looking at you Robbie Williams!

But...

George Michael - well pretty much anything! But especially ‘First time ever I saw your face’ and ‘As’

Joe cocker ‘a little help from my friends’

Placebo’s cover of ‘running up that hill’

Johnny cash ‘hurt’

Jeff Buckley ‘hallelujah’

Soft cell ‘tainted love’

Marilyn Manson “sweet dreams (are made of this)’

The animals ‘house of the rising sun’

Ike and Tina Turner ‘proud Mary’ (although I do still LOVE the ccr original too)

Jose Gonzales ‘heartbeats’ (people may be going “never heard of this one” at this point but Bones fans I guarantee you know it! Also cyndi Lauper does a stunning version of “at last” which is not to criticise Etta James’s fantastic version but cyndi’s is amazing)

Otis redding ‘try a little tenderness’

Aretha Franklin ‘respect’

Marvin Gaye ‘I heard it through the grapevine’

See? LOADS of great cover versions over the years

“Robbie Williams has killed merry Christmas everybody by slade. He took a great song then beat it to death with smug” he’s a barely adequate singer who needs to accept the limits of his “talent” he murdered ‘freedom ‘90’ and so clearly in his interpretation and even comments he made in interviews didn’t “get” the song at all

For years now I've had a theory that there should be listed songs, like there are listed buildings. No one is allowed to mess about with them without permission (I'm vague on this detail - who decides? A panel of experts for every musical genre, so you have the Death Metal panel and the Motown panel, etc?) - so for example you can't re-record London's Calling by The Clash unless the Punk Panel OKs it. And they probably won't OK it because they'll be hard as nails and it will make planning permission applications for your Grade 2 listed cottage look like a walk in the park I fucking LOVE this idea! Can I sit on the 80’s pure pop panel? Much underrated genre

“I have liked ‘original’ songs before only to find out they are cover versions!” I did this a lot as a teen before my musical knowledge was more rounded, I’d be singing away a la the current version and mum or dad would join in a la original and I’d be like “how do you know the words to this CLEARLY modern song?!”

When dad hushed me and played his vinyl original of Dionne Warwick singing “I say a little prayer” after I stupidly and arrogantly banged on about this great new bomb the bass
song I was rightly humbled... then when it finished he blew my mind by telling me the singer was Whitney Houston’s cousin!

As a ‘vocalist’ myself (strictly amateur famous in my own lunchtime) I understand the ego behind doing your own version of a song - doesn’t necessarily mean it should be inflicted on others!

Anyone else remember that strange phenomenon in the 70’s and 80’s before streaming when we had to BUY music where there were “various artist” tapes with the top hits of that year...but they were really cheap because they were being performed by not famous singers? Top of the pops brought out a series of cassettes like this - dreadful things! They were cheap stocking fillers my siblings and I got

I must admit I did use them for the knock off Walkman I had though because I didn’t care if it got wrecked when it was “jogged” when I was using it for actual walking - I’m sure other 80’s mners will know my pain re having a knock off rather than an actual Walkman that couldn’t cope with actual movement

“I love the original recording of Hurt, but Johnny Cash takes it, and pours a lifetime of regret into it like I don't think anyone else could.” Totally agree. And it’s use in person of interest in the aftermath of a main characters death when the main character is unleashing a lifetimes worth of ‘hurt’ - rage, regret, sorrow, love, loneliness, despair... it’s utterly heartbreaking

“When you put yourself into that music” definitely - it’s far more moving when you can genuinely believe that the singer relates to the lyrics

Ugh yes don’t get me started on fast car! I played dd the original after I overheard the cover on her radio - and thankfully she also agreed the original was far better and she was playing it to her friends. As the daughter and granddaughter of alcoholics that song feels deeply personal to me (I know it isn’t) and I won’t entertain the cover being played around me.

And yes to the “not quite a direct copy” cover versions being utterly pointless

Ashamed to admit i loved Paul young back in the day but he did almost all cover versions and not great ones either - love of the common people is I think the first one my parents rolled their eyes and made me listen to the original!

@Theroigne jealous guys a horrible song when you look at the history can’t bear to hear it

@coocooocoo there are LOADS of legal knots when it comes to spandau songs I think they’ve all sued each other like at least 5 times!

When you look at stuff like that and all the bands that have broken up due to “creative differences” etc I think I chose very well in being a fan of wham! And George Michael as they genuinely always liked and respected each other treated each other well and never to my knowledge seriously fell out (they had bickers about certain musical arrangements but nothing major).

That seems so rare in the music world.

HildaRumpole · 30/12/2019 22:19

Regina Spektor cover of No Surprises (Radiohead) is an excellent cover, I heard the song in a new way. Not totally against covers! Am totally against Ellie Golding - what was the travesty of a cover she did of How Long Will I Love you?!! The original is a tune!

Clawdy · 30/12/2019 22:21

Worst ever cover for me was Madonna's version of American Pie.

Butterymuffin · 30/12/2019 22:30

@Itsigginingtolookalotlikexmas A-ha's Crying in the Rain is immense.

Crunchymum · 30/12/2019 22:43

Agree with most on here for worst cover.

However, Creedence Clearwater Revival is the best cover ever (of Heard It Through The Grapevine). I cannot abide the song, other than this version - which I love!!!

MissClareRemembers · 30/12/2019 22:44

Now, This Mortal Coil’s cover of Jeff Buckley’s Song To The Siren is phenomenal. It takes an already great song and transcends it to a whole other level.

I do wish people would leave Songbird alone.

dementedma · 30/12/2019 22:47

KD Lang's Hallelujah is the best ever version

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 30/12/2019 22:51

I agree on songs made slower and breathier, but I tend to enjoy songs that are beefed up - Always on My Mind by PSB for instance. Fish did a great covers album where he covered Something In The Air and Jeepster, and I really like his version of Faith Healer.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 30/12/2019 22:52

Ooh and Scott Bradlee's Post Modern Jukebox did an awesome cover of Creep.

Badbilly · 30/12/2019 23:18

Ooh and Scott Bradlee's Post Modern Jukebox did an awesome cover of Creep.

I also like their cover of “All about the bass”, in fact most of their covers are good, and it adds a whole new dimension when they present the songs in a completely different genre.

AngeloMysterioso · 30/12/2019 23:19

I think we can all agree that All Saints version of Under The Bridge is one of the worst covers ever.

imabusybee · 30/12/2019 23:34

I take your All Saints Under the Bridge cover, and I raise you Kelly Osborne PAPA don't preach Confused

ThighThighOfthigh · 30/12/2019 23:42

Oh please! Hilary Duff doing My Generation has to take the biscuit.

Crinkle77 · 30/12/2019 23:47

The recent cover of Tracy Chapman's Fast Car. No idea who did it but it was hideous.

isabellerossignol · 30/12/2019 23:51

Remember the Girls Aloud and, hmm, some other girl group, covering Walk This Way?

I died a little inside at that because I couldn't make up my mind if everyone involved in it was spectacularly naive about the lyrics or if in actual fact it was the idea of some hideous middle aged man who was sitting with his hands down his pants at the thought of forcing attractive young women to sing this song. From what I've heard of the music industry, I sadly think it might be the latter.

OwlBeThere · 30/12/2019 23:52

The beauty of music is that what you think is a travesty someone else will have a deep connection to.
So whilst I totally agree that Joni should not be touched, I think YABU because there are some covers that I love far more than the original.

CooCooCoo · 30/12/2019 23:54

Remember the Girls Aloud and, hmm, some other girl group, covering Walk This Way?

Didn’t they do Stay (East 17) as well? Eeek

Whatafustercluck · 30/12/2019 23:58

I'm of the school of thought that believes if you're going to do a cover of an iconic song, at least interpret it differently and have the guts to take it on and change it. Disturbed's The Sound of Silence is immense and tells the story in a totally different (in my view better) way than the original. Such a powerful version, gives me goosebumps.

On the other hand I will never forgive the Corrs for what they did to REM's Everybody Hurts.
