My dh spoke to his son yesterday to ask what he had for christmas,(sent son a text christmas day as that's what son asked), loads of gifts as usual but mentioned he'd gotten It and Dr sleep in book form. I know he's seen It part 1 which is rated as a 15 but the book is considerably more graphic and contains in depth violence and sex as well as usual bad language(I've read it so I do know). Aibu to think that a 12 year old shouldn't be reading it unless a parent has read it first, films are easier as they could be watched and the parent then decide. The film is only based on the book and doesn't contain half of whats in it.
Yes- I am being unreasonable and a 12 year old should read it and make up their own mind.
No- I'm not being unreasonable and a parent should do more research first before letting a child read such books.

I fail to see how parents being murdered and people being tortured is suitable for 6 year old...

the general theme of Harry Potter might be interesting, and clearly it is, but the content is not really appropriate for someone so young.

I read IT about that age and it scarred me less than proper Grimm tales I read about that time too😂 I seriously don't even recall the sex scenes from IT.

LolaLollypop · 30/12/2019 14:02

IT has sex scenes? I can't remember them. was probably hiding behind the sofa at that point Confused

Most classic fairytales are way more gruesome, main characters often being orphans.

AllergicToAMop · 30/12/2019 14:04

Not the movie. Sorry. The book. I genuinely didn't even remember there was sex in it. I guess my innocent (and i really was Blush ) brain just didn't process it.

MissMoogle · 30/12/2019 14:05

I watched the original IT aged 10. Read the books around the same age. Was absolutely devouring Virginia Andrew's by the time I was 12. Jilly cooper followed aged 14 (given to me to read on holiday by my auntie) after having watched riders on TV.

Saying that, I also was reading the famous 5, secret 7, point horror, Judy blume and sweet valley high and the babysitters club books at the same time. The "age appropriate" books were often read in an hour or two, as I was an advanced reader for my age, having skipped a reading year at primary school (the ramifications of that could be a whole other thread - even back then kids didnt like the swotty quiet reading nerds).

IT: the boys all have sex with Beverly to bring them closer together before the face off with the clown.

Can't for the life of me see why both on screen adaptations missed that bit out Grin

FairytaleofButlins · 30/12/2019 14:07

the book

it's hardly graphic though, it goes well over the head of someone too young.

I don't think many people read the original versions, it's all about the Disney edited ones nowadays!

That's the point I made up thread . Eveil step mothers plan to kill in several fairy tails. They are full of witches out to harm and siblings who hate them and treat them like shit. No wonder the rapey prince seems like the better option..

I can think of two films right now . One is a 12 has 2 sex scenes and gun fire and a drowning and a drunk.bent cop. Ones a 15. They swear once and a shark dies.

How does that even work.

WatchingTheMoon · 30/12/2019 14:10

I read a couple of Stephen King books at 13 or so and I was terrified for months.

Having said that, I was a very easily scared child, so it definitely depends.

Yup. I think people should go back to basicsGrin Many teachable moments there. That's what fairy tales were originally for. Scare and teach caution in a safe environment.

FairytaleofButlins · 30/12/2019 14:11

rapey prince? In which one would that be, can't think of a single one with a rapey prince...

oh do you mean a single kiss? Grin

SarahTancredi · 30/12/2019 14:13

Kisses on women who are unconscious and whom they have never met before.

Yeah not dodgy at all

gamerchick · 30/12/2019 14:15

Yeah but wasn't the original where she woke up giving birth?

AllergicToAMop · 30/12/2019 14:15

But they know kiss is the only way to wake her.

AllergicToAMop · 30/12/2019 14:16

Yeah but wasn't the original where she woke up giving birth?

After birth when one of the twins sucked her thumb

FishCanFly · 30/12/2019 14:19

Grin in my day they were proper original - medieval and macabre. Sanitised Harry Potter has nothing on them

SarahTancredi · 30/12/2019 14:21

How?

Theres enough medical knowledge on how to revive unconscious princesses but not enough for an ambulance?

Didnt it just dislodge the apple. A pat on the back would have done that too.

Unless you have a thing for half chewed rotten apples?

FairytaleofButlins · 30/12/2019 14:22

you might have preferred a slap in the face to wake her up, but a kiss for a couple meant to be in love sounds better in the sorry!

I don't think anyone ever took that as an incentive to go and rape or sexually assault women in the street Grin

The kissing the frog was a bit dodgy though..

AllergicToAMop · 30/12/2019 14:27

Maaaaaaaaaaagiccccc

SarahTancredi · 30/12/2019 14:29

So much in love he never helped her not be poisoned in the first place just miraculously came across her on his travels with his x ray vision through hedges ?

SarahTancredi · 30/12/2019 14:32

So necrophiloa
Beastiality
Unconsentimg women ( and frogs)
Useless men
Evil murderous parents
Free roaming children

And Harry Potter is unsuitable ?Grin

AllergicToAMop · 30/12/2019 14:35

Don't forget cannibalism

AllergicToAMop · 30/12/2019 14:36

And mutilation! Cinderella's sisters for instance.
