To expect someone to be able to help my 2yo 'eczema' skin- pic

Firstly this thread isn't in place of medical advice. We see the GP's weekly atm and 8 weeks, 6 GP's none have helped. I'm on the waiting list for a specialist appointment.

Until then I'm hoping someone may be able to help.

I was told this was eczema when it was dry patches but around 8-10 weeks ago the spots started, the odd 2 or 3 on each arm has now turned to this. Spots everywhere.

It's heartbreaking I don't know what to do any more to help my baby.

So far I've tried numerous creams over counter and prescribed (inc hydrocortisone).
More baths/ less baths
New washing liquid/ anti bac washer stuff
Different clothing materials
Dressing warmer/ cooler
Anti histamines
Diet changes
Heating on/ heating off
Clothes air dried/ tumble dried
Avoiding homes with animals
Avoiding public places

Nothing made a difference and I'm at a loss and feeling so bad for my child.

Any suggestions or advice appreciated as it could be something I could fix now.

Before this happened there was never an issue with allergies or skin- nothing.

Also if youre sticking cream on her every three hours please stop! Give it a few days and see if the spots go. For all you know it could be causing them 🙈

ProfessionalBoss · 29/12/2019 23:55

Boots the pharmacy do a soap called "Carbon Theory", it's a charcoal soap.

My uncle had extremely extensive eczema as a child, since he was a newborn and the ONLY thing which made a difference was charcoal soap, which was apparently a really well known product for eczema and heat/nappy rashes etc back on the 60's.

It might be worth a try, and I know that Carbon Theory soap has some testamonial photos on Google for the difference it makes to acne, I haven't checked for eczema...

beingchampion · 29/12/2019 23:56

I'd probably try a different detergent too. Oddly enough Tesco Bio tablets are really good for me and my DS who also suffers. Never use softeners or any of the scented stuff for laundry. Could you wash her stuff separately (including towels and bedding) only in water & white vinegar for a month or two to see if that helps too.

DangerMouse17 · 29/12/2019 23:58

I really dont think this is eczema. Try a warm dettol bath, no heavy creams on top. A tiny bit of coconut oil a bit later on if needed.

Detol bath is the only thing that helps my eczema "itch" and helps with bacteria from all the oozing. I do it once a week when it's really bad.

Thistle23 · 29/12/2019 23:58

I had to change soap powder recently as it was causing major flare ups with my eczema . I now use Asdas own non bio gel , the difference in my skin is ridiculous .

I've also found sugar is a major irritant for me .

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 30/12/2019 00:01

Honestly I think you need to stop and really pair down what you are doing, back to basics. That's a lot of different things to have tried in an 8 week period. You need at least a week to let any cream or change start to work.

I would :

  • use a very gentle non bio on clothes washes, something specific for baby skin
  • Luke warm baths with no soap or shampoo.
  • cut out dairy completely
  • use an emollient 3 times a day

Give that 2 weeks, keep a food diary and see if there are any changes.

I’m not an expert on eczema at all so don’t know what it can’t and can’t look
look like, but I didn’t think it looked ‘sporty’

However I have particularly reactive skin and am allergic to lots of things and especially heat and sunlight. This looks very much like when I get a heat or sunlight rash. Antihistamines are the only thing that ever really helps and aloe Vera gel a little. Flowers

Mrsgoggingsthe3rd · 30/12/2019 00:04

If you’re looking for a good washing liquid I love Ecover Zero

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 30/12/2019 00:05

Surcare for washing clothes,no conditioner as a pp suggested.

FainaSnowChild · 30/12/2019 00:06

It was removing all soap and shampoo that helped my sons' eczema. I used aqueous cream instead. Worked within days.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 30/12/2019 00:08

Oh yes,no shampoo or soaps either.

ClaireGD · 30/12/2019 00:09

I recently posted similar pictures to this of my daughter and her eczema. Had a similar rash that has now eventually cleared up after 4 weeks. I stopped using all bath products and moisturised with coconut oil - this literally did nothing. Then I started using cowshed baby milky body lotion and the rash instantly improved and has now cleared!

SofiaAmes · 30/12/2019 00:11

That does NOT look like eczema!!! Please take your dd back to the gp to have a look at the spots. Could it be Hand, Foot and Mouth?
My dd had terrible eczema and skin allergies (hives) to everything. They look completely different, but often overlapped in occurrence. Antihistamines helped and Aveeno, but the final cure for the eczema was leaving the UK and moving back to California to my home where the water is filtered and we have lots of sunshine. Hives were eventually grown out of in her early teens.

PixieDustt · 30/12/2019 00:15

My partner has really really bad eczema. He's been on all the creams you could think of and nothing has worked except when he tried some of DS's childs farm moisturiser as I heard it worked well on it. His itchiness stopped and the redness went away within 12 hours.

Bouledeneige · 30/12/2019 00:16

Lifelong eczema sufferer here and both my DC have it. Honestly it doesn't look like eczema to me - looks more allergic or related to a virus. In our family we are typically affected around the joints, back of shoulders, elbows and knees, hands, face, earlobes.

But if it is be prepared for a longer haul. We never use soap or bio-washing liquid, only wear cotton against the skin, avoid lanolin, and are careful with shampoos. Bathe in warm not scalding water use hydrocortisone to blitz it, emollients in the bath.

Couldn't do with Aveeno.

Useful22 · 30/12/2019 00:24

My first had it just appear like that, spotty. We used dermasik garments under clothes and cetraban once a day. My second had it worse and we tried same routine and it made him worse. For him it was aveeno twice a day and hydrocortisone ince a day. But it took a long time to clear. My point is skin conditions are different, it is trial and error.

Remove all soaps from baths, use non bio, and only cotton clothes.

Useful22 · 30/12/2019 00:27

Also I agree with boul, odd to start kn back if eczema. Much like my first, I don't think it was eczema.so would def rate the dermasilk if you can as it's expensive and cetraban from gp.

Mummy20192 · 30/12/2019 00:28

My dds eczema got so bad it would puss abs bleed for weeks... we have cut out sugar from her diet and that has helped... try to only give natural sweetener like honey, agave etc.. good luck

Wellintentionedreader · 30/12/2019 00:55

I had shocking eczema from six months when mum fed me my first egg . I was allergic to the bases and other ingredients in treatments and sensitive or allergic to many foods , non foods and fluffy animals .
Eventually , decades later and suffering extreme poverty and very little skin , I moved to a hovel in a forest (no pollution) with untreated water , ate a 'few foods diet' with NO additives and discovered Surcare detergent , Betnovate RD cream , Fucibet cream and Eucerin 5% cream with urea .
I never use plug in air fresheners nor antibacterial surface sprays- just very hot water and soap .
My skin is lovely now and I am tolerant of pretty much everything that caused a problem before .

BonnyConnie · 30/12/2019 01:01

Have you tried anti fungal creams? Would also consider cutting out milk as it often triggers skin problems.

GreenTulips · 30/12/2019 01:09

Have you tried the Aloevera plant? Break a leaf and apply.Any left out it in the fridge and reapply. I did 3 x a day and sons eczema never came back

DD is more sensitive and we changed to Aloevera soap and sun cream, you can also get shampoo and conditioner

Try the local health shops for it.

I’m not a rep. That company spoils a good product. It’s cheap and works wonders.

IdiotInDisguise · 30/12/2019 01:14

DS’ dermatologist once said that eczema is condition the children have and the parents suffer. Now I have developed eczema myself I can reassure you that it looks awful, but it is not painful just incredibly itchy and that it feels great to have a good scratch even if you regret it immediately;

My eczema is stress generated but I think the following still applies when it comes to the spots:

When the skin is inflamed it becomes very fragile, a light scratching or rub against a towel or your clothes when you are lying down and you get those spots.

I second the avena baths and the Eucerin 10% urea, Aveeno. The trick is to break the cycle, once the red raised spots are reduced with the HC you can maintain it by continuing just with the creams.

Hot baths make it worse as well as been hot in bed. Milk can be a cause, but please do not remove it before introducing a lot of alternative sources of calcium like broccoli and kale. (Mind you, once we removed the milk DS was craving broccoli like mad so we had it every day).

Rocket1982 · 30/12/2019 01:17

Someone else mentioned Child's farm moisturiser. My son had big patches of what seemed to be eczema all over his body (my husband had it too) and we tried various things for months. After a few days of Child's farm it all went, I couldn't believe it. Now we put some on whenever he gets patches of dry skin (arms and cheeks in winter mainly).

GreenTulips · 30/12/2019 01:21

I think lush do a dream cream that works as well

Sweetpeach3 · 30/12/2019 01:23

Both my baby's and myself and my dad suffer from eczema
Tried everything but I found children's farm products to be amazing.
Even my dad uses the moistures now an I use the shampoo. Body wash. Bubble bath and moisturiser. Honestly it's the only thing that actually worked for us plus is smells amazing compared to the doctors stuff lol

My little girls eczema came out in circles and I thought it was ring worm or something but was simple eczema. Suppose it looks different on everyone but please try the children's farm. Worked wonders for me xx
