To ask what you feel about the complaints about Gavin and Stacey Christmas episode

Ness and Bryn were seen singing Fairytale of New York in the pub, which of course includes the word faggott (and also slut but nobody seems upset about that!). So there’s been complaints. I realise it’s a horrible word but in the context of the show it wasn’t intended in an offensive way and those characters aren’t known for being particularly politically correct. If the song is being played on the radio surely it will inevitably appear on tv unless it’s banned but then who decides what is allowed to be heard and what words we can and can’t deal with? Censorship always makes me a little uncomfortable but maybe some words need to be wiped out.

@tillytoodles1 Agreed. In the same way "queer" was never meant as an insult to gay people. Or "gay" as an insult, for that matter.
Sad bastards. None of my gay family or friends give a shit.

I haven't seen the Christmas special but have read a little about the controversy. If you're going to complain about the use of a homophobic slur then you should also be complaining about the sexist one. Otherwise you're just a hypocrite really. Shows the priorities of the woke, but at least it seems that there are only seven of them.

HarrietThePi · 29/12/2019 19:55

Sorry my mistake. 11 complaints...so 11 of them.

DingDongSchadenfreudeOnHigh · 29/12/2019 19:55

My mum's family were Irish and my mum often used to call me a little faggot when I was naughty. The word has only become a "bad" word since it became a derogatory word for a gay man.

Exactly!

I know of 4 types of faggot:

  1. the above, but generally used about a miserable grumpy old man or woman

  2. a bundle of sticks

  3. a sort of meatball made of minced entrails wrapped on pig's intestinal membranes

  4. a type of embroidery stitch

Oh - just remembered 5th - Ein Fagott is German for a bassoon

Only in the US (as far as I am aware) was "faggot" ever used as a derogatory term for a male homosexual.

Some people just look for stuff to get incensed about.

BackOnceAgainWithATinselHalo · 29/12/2019 19:56

They had Gav react to the word! Storm in a teacup.

QueenOfIce · 29/12/2019 19:57

Some people just live to be offended. 🙄 lets hope in 2020 they get a life and tackle real issues.

MsChnandlerBong · 29/12/2019 19:58

Was there similar fuss when Dawn called Pete a pre-op 🤣 Can't imagine that flying in our woke blue haired world of today!

MerryChristmasEveryone1974 · 29/12/2019 20:00

I find it more unreasonable that nobody is picking up on the whole thing about the photo of Stacey and Nessa and there being 17 years age difference. Is nobody thinking that Nessa could be Stacey's birth mum? I don't know how that'd work with Gwen, but I really think it's what they were hinting at!
I really hope there are more episodes to come!!

Arnoldthecat · 29/12/2019 20:00

Who cares about a few whingers? Digressing slightly,,,I know G and S have a bit of a cult following but its one of those progs i have never ever watched though i was vaguely aware of it. However after all the fuss and promotion of it i decided to give it a go on catch up. I thought it was really good and now im back tracking to start from the beginning !

NameChangeNugget · 29/12/2019 20:01

The 11 people who complained, clearly need to get a life

GreyHare · 29/12/2019 20:02

Didn't watch it but my Nan who was from the midlands used to call us Cheeky little faggots, naughty little faggots and so on, it was a term of endearment to her and us.

AJPTaylor · 29/12/2019 20:02

I think that as this song has been sung over and over since 1987, it takes a whole new level of woke to find it objectionable 32 years later. The whole context of the song is trading insults, one of which is each is faggot.
I suspect it may be one of my daughters or friends who complained after they tried and failed to tell me how by not objecting I myself am homophobic

Chosennonetosurvive · 29/12/2019 20:12

Don't be a twat stace complainers (all 11 of you)

JayAlfredPrufrock · 29/12/2019 20:15

I was so pleased that the sanitised version wasn’t used.

fedup21 · 29/12/2019 20:15

Wonder if anyone complained when Pam called Nessa a truck driving dyke in 1st series

Wasn’t that Dawn? Grin

newlifenewme2020 · 29/12/2019 20:19

Pam is a great character but my god if you knew someone like her in real life she would drive you mad

CrissmussMockers · 29/12/2019 20:21

The definitve history of the song:

www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0074f8x/the-story-of-fairytale-of-new-york

It was Ronan Keating's manager who first took exception to 'faggot,' and so was midwife to the bowdler: "You Scumbag, You Maggot, You're cheap and you're haggared."

Herbalteahippie · 29/12/2019 20:30

YANBU. The definition of faggot changed about 10 years ago to ‘someone annoying’ eg. Motorcycle riders that rev their engines. There is a whole episode of South Park that explains it.
It’s a dead word which doesn’t have homophobic undertones anymore.

Valanice1989 · 29/12/2019 20:44

I think journalists complain to Ofcom so they can then write articles about the complaints.

CakeandCustard28 · 29/12/2019 20:44

I was more upset that they left it on a cliffhanger of Nessa proposing to Smithy and we might never find out the answer. 😱
The 11 people need to get a life, who even has the time to report a TV show.

midnightmisssuki · 29/12/2019 20:45

didn't bother me - i love that song!

Cryingoverspilttea · 29/12/2019 20:48

@Littlecaf faggott just means cheeky fucker in the context of the song. It always has and always will. My Mum still calls people faggotts in exactly that same context. Because that's what the word means here! It has fuck all to do with anyone gay.

TillyFloss10 · 29/12/2019 20:48

I think it has been blown up by the papers. There were only a handful of complaints and all the stories contain the same couple of tweets.
The papers have reported it so over the top to reinforce their readers attitude that millenials/gay people/whoever is compliaing are snowflakes. So they can feel about themselves because now they have proof to back up their views.

It takes a hell of a lot more than that to offend people

fedup21 · 29/12/2019 20:50

If you want to complain about anything, complain about the person who wrote the song’s words!!

Gavin and Stacey (well, Nessa and Bryn) just sang the song as it was written!

Bloke23 · 29/12/2019 20:53

Just have to get used to people complaining, its the generation of the snowflake
