I've just seen a post on a local parenting group on facebook suggesting that the average price people are paying for a prom dress is £500! Really?? Or is it just the braggers who have commented? AIBU to think that the majority of parents can't possibly be spending anywhere near this?? We're not in an affluent area!

I took my younger sis prom Dress shopping for a nose about and get ideas. Cheapest in the specialist shops were 500.
She's very tall, very developed and a little chunky and buying in a high St shop wouldn't work. . Same issues wit bridemaid dresses
So no doubt will need altering too?
She goes to a school that's not affluent at all lots of PP kids etc. But 95% wear the proper gowns?

On the other hand many yrs ago my cousin literally wore a black plain dress and converse. She always said she wouldn't follow the crowd and wear what she's comfortable in. And she did. She didn't enjoy the night any less

It was down to choice as my uncle and aunt are very well off and 500 dress would of been nothing to them.
Fair play to her.

Does anyone else remember when prom was called a semi-formal Grin

Bought for £120 and sold it after for £60
The first girls buying them spent loads and then as time for nearer there was almost an Anti spend lobby - so girls were spending as little as possible and looked lovely for around £30

DD found a beautiful dress in a sale for $50. I had told her my max was $200 which is the kind of money I think most of the others spent if they paid full price. Someone's dress cost $1,000, the other girls weren't envious they just thought "more money than sense".

Just to clarify there's no question of us spending £500 on a dress for one wear. I've seen loads of choice elsewhere for less than £100 that i know my daughter will look stunning in. And as mentioned above it's not strictly a prom x

We have a 'Boutique' Charity shop near us - you pay between £10 and £20 for one Grin

As someone said upthread - it is difficult to recoup more than about £25 by selling on - on E-bay or Gumtree or your local facebook selling site, so it's a buyer's market.

You'd have to be ridiculously loaded, or plain daft to spend £500 on a dress for one evening.

Most of the girls wore evening dresses at DDs last year, all very similar. Voile style skirt area with sequins on the top half. Halter necks were very popular as were cut out midriffs. It was basically the same dress but in various colours with slight differences in details. I Would not of been able to tell the expensive from the cheap. They all looked stunning and a lot of money seemed to be spent on hair and makeup.

I've used Silhouette London - great value available online but if you are in London there's a shop where you can try on. Realistic prices!

Check out www.eshakti.com. You can customize any dress, and they have styles from casual to formal.

We had our first highschool dance this year. We picked the dress she liked from a high end department store at $400... then went on ebay, found the exact gown for $40 already dry cleaned like new. She looked amazing and was absolutely fine with not wearing something new. We will buy her other gowns the same way. The girl next door spent $750 then $100 to alter hers. They won't even get half that back.
