To think smoked salmon 3 days past BB date will be ok?

...as above - my reasoning being that it's been cured (by being smoked) has been in refrigerator with packaging intact.

DH thinks I'm bonkers and that even with it having been cured/preserved that the best before date should be respected as gospel... gahh!!

I'd definitely eat it! That's the whole point, it's cured/preserved Smile

MakeItRain · 29/12/2019 10:53

"Best before" isn't the same as "use by". It should be fine.

WTCT · 29/12/2019 10:55

It will be fine - it’s a best before date!

Dogwalks2 · 29/12/2019 10:56

It will be absolutely fine.

Binterested · 29/12/2019 10:56

I never understand this. Isn’t it smoked in order to preserve it ? Should last a lot longer than fresh surely ?

BigBairyHollocks · 29/12/2019 10:59

It’ll be fine.

Keepmewarm · 29/12/2019 10:59

Eat it

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 29/12/2019 10:59

Absolutely fine

ScreamingValalalalahLalalalah · 29/12/2019 11:02

I should think it will be OK.

If you have a young and healthy cat, you could tear off a small piece and cat test it - a cat with a functioning sense of smell won't eat off fish or meat.

PleasantVille · 29/12/2019 11:06

Assuming your eyes and nose aren't failing of course you can eat it. People like your DH are responsible for the waste of tons of perfectly edible food.

selmabear · 29/12/2019 11:08

Sounds like my DP. Absolutely paranoid about the dates on food. You'll be fine OP, enjoy your salmon and ignore your DP.

FinallyHere · 29/12/2019 11:26

Absolutely, I rely on my nose and eyes before eating , well, anything. I use the dates on food to make sure the oldest is eaten first but otherwise ...

Would your DH eat something if it were in date but smelt off? Thought not, so he is using smell too.

MereDintofPandiculation · 29/12/2019 11:57

"best before" is just about flavour/texture. Not about safety. If it's been in the fridge with the packet open, it might get crispy round the edges. Otherwise I'd have no hesitation.

If it's past "use by" that's different. I'd then compare "use by" with the date of sale. Something which had a "use by" 6 months after you purchased it and is now 3 days out of date - I would take the risk - though I wouldn't feed it to anyone else or advise anyone else to eat it. "Use by" the day after purchase (eg fresh cream cake), and now 3 days past - more likely to be a problem.

Bluntness100 · 29/12/2019 11:59

Is it definitely best before and not use by?

cushioncovers · 29/12/2019 12:03

Is it best before? Or use by?

Butterymuffin · 29/12/2019 12:05

It's smoked. It'll last for ages. Eat it!

confusedandemployed · 29/12/2019 12:06

Had some on Boxing Day with date of 23rd. I'm still alive and it tasted fine.

Whathappenedtothelego · 29/12/2019 12:08

I ignore dates unless it is seafood, go by senses of sight, smell and taste.
I have been eating smoked trout, best before 25th today and yesterday- it's absolutely fine, and delicious!

BlueSuffragette · 29/12/2019 12:10

BB dates are only there to fool you into throwing it away and buying some more. It will be fine.

Southwest12 · 29/12/2019 12:11

I've got a packet in the fridge that was best before 30 December last year... I'm still contemplating opening it and eating it, as long as it smells fine it'll be okay. I don't do use by/best before dates.
