In youth hostel hell

What is this fresh hell? Go to a youth hostel they said, DC will love it.
Currently lay on a bunk bed, in a room with only two bunk beds and a cupboard. Cost as much as a 3-4* star hotel for this dump.
I miss having a kettle in the room, the kitchen is in a different building so I’ve gone to bed thirsty.
It’s so noisy, people are messing about and shouting and screaming, playing some sort of game that warrants lots of cheering every 30 seconds or so, not sure if they are outside or downstairs with the doors/windows open or what but it’s very loud.
AIBU to just get up and go home? 1 DC is asleep, the other doesn’t seem to be.

How old are the DC and what on earth possessed you to go to a youth hostel in the first place?!

Stevienickssleeves · 28/12/2019 23:12

Sounds rough, can you go home?

22Giraffes · 28/12/2019 23:14

If you are able to go home then yes I would. It sounds miserable and the money is sadly lost now whether you stay or go. Good luck!

Doyoumind · 28/12/2019 23:14

Did you understand what you were signing up for? Sometimes they suit me as they're cheaper than hotels and you can save money by preparing your own food. They are still hostels at the end of the day and not hotels though.

ArkAtEee · 28/12/2019 23:15

YADNBU. Last time I stayed in a youth hostel, I was woken in the middle of the night not once but twice by someone convinced I was in their bed. Reader, I was not in their bed, the person at reception had made a mistake. Never again Angry

HotPenguin · 28/12/2019 23:16

Complain to reception about the noise. As for the kettle, you must have known that when you booked! I love a youth hostel.

eryn6556 · 28/12/2019 23:16

I wouldn't describe that as 'youth hostel hell', that's just a youth hostel. Go home if you're able to

Purpleartichoke · 28/12/2019 23:16

I have never understood why anyone would subject themselves to a hostel if they had any other options, even if that means never traveling.

AtSea1979 · 28/12/2019 23:18

It’s a 2 hour drive home. I keep thinking hopefully they’ll shut up soon, I guess it is quite early for some.

How on earth is it the same price as a 3/4 star hotel?

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 28/12/2019 23:24

Whaaaaat

Stay in a hostel they said

Shove it up your arse sideways l'm not 17 is what your response should have been

Hellokittymania · 28/12/2019 23:25

I have spent many, many nights at youth hostels… I’m a night owl, so usually the noise isn’t so much a problem unless there is a lock out and we have to leave in the morning… But it’s the “other activities“ that happen in there that’s really get to me… Just think of the backpackers hostels in Southeast Asia…

MollysMummy2010 · 28/12/2019 23:26

Checked into one once in Dublin years ago. Lasted about two minutes before I turned round and booked into a hotel. Not for me and I don't think I would take my daughter to one.

AtSea1979 · 28/12/2019 23:27

Yep I def should have said that. I did when they suggested camping. This doesn’t seem like much improvement.

Yep same price. We stay in lots of hotels. This was £80 per night, i’ve stayed in a few hotels for that.

Why are you in a Youth hostel? Confused

DramaAlpaca · 28/12/2019 23:28

What on earth were you thinking? I'd get up & drive home.

The first and last time I stayed in a youth hostel was in 1984. In a dorm Never again.

AtSea1979 · 28/12/2019 23:29

We have a private family room, me and DS and DD

CilantroChili · 28/12/2019 23:30

Ermmm how old are you and your children? Nothing on this great green earth beyond fire or flood would get me into a Youth Hostel.
It does what it says on the tin!

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 28/12/2019 23:31

I've never stayed in one, but my husband needed to be in Castlebay (Isle of Barra) overnight and only the hostel had a bed we could afford (only £20 a night I think). He said it was great- plenty of hot water and comfortable rooms. He's a very sociable person though, I'm much less so and would probably have liked it much less.
In your position I would check to see if the second child is actually asleep and if not I'd gather them up and take them home.

managedmis · 28/12/2019 23:32

£80??! Where, central London?

It's not that one in whitby is it

TW2013 · 28/12/2019 23:33

How old are the dc? If they are teens I might be inclined to see it out so they get a taste of whether youth hostels are for them or not. Help them think through the benefits and downsides. I quite enjoyed it in my early 20s. Don't think I could now. If they are younger I would be off when they are all awake. Presumably you have the room to yourselves.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 28/12/2019 23:34

Originally, the youth hostel movement catered for groups of young adults who enjoyed hiking and other outdoor pursuits. You could not arrive by car. Meals were communal and each hosteller was given chores. There was lights out early and piano, song and folk dancing of an evening. Now they are cheapish places for party-goers and those hoping to get drunk and laid.

Toddlerteaplease · 28/12/2019 23:34

Nothing wrong with Youth Hostels. My sister has worked in several and her partner is the manger of one. It's not a luxury hotel. It's clean basic accommodation.

DecemberSnow · 28/12/2019 23:34

Why are you in a youth hostel?

Jozen · 28/12/2019 23:35

What on earth possessed you to book a youth hostel with kids in tow? And same price as a 3/4*????
What you describe sounds pretty standard of a hostel in my experience of hostels in Australia and New Zealand.
Now I'm older, I like a bit of quiet, comfort and a kettle in my room, there's no way I'd book one now, alone and definitely not with kids. I'd prefer a budget hotel or roadside motel which is what we do now when travelling.
