Was I wrong?

This is pretty insignificant in the grand scheme of things but now I’m second guessing myself.

Dd got lots of clothes for Christmas from friends and relatives, and a couple of things would have been better in the next size up. So as I had gift receipts I took them back to the shop, found the same items in a bigger size and as they were now in the sale I picked up a couple of other things. When I got to the till I explained I was returning some items for a bigger size and the assistant just scanned the additional items and asked for the money for them.

When I pointed out the items I was returning had been purchased at full price but the replacements were in the sale she got a bit huffy and made a big deal of scanning the receipts and refunding the original items to individual gift cards and then putting the whole transaction through again, it took what felt like forever although was probably about 15 minutes, while a huge queue formed behind me.

Now I’m wondering if I was wrong, should I just have done a straight swap even though the items were now reduced?

You should have just done a straight swap. The items you were exchanging were bought at full price. I am surprised they did it for you.

slipperywhensparticus · 28/12/2019 20:52

Normally its just a straight swap

Babybel90 · 28/12/2019 20:52

But if they hadn’t had what I’d wanted I would’ve got the items refunded to a gift card then gone and chosen something another day, so I don’t think I was being cheeky.

Bluntness100 · 28/12/2019 20:54

Nah, you were fine. You could have just asked for the refund onto a gift card and then used it later. You did the right thing and no way it should have been a straight swap.

KnifeAngel · 28/12/2019 20:54

You were being cheeky.

Gremlin78 · 28/12/2019 20:57

Nope, think most people would have done what you did - If things were going into the sale, then why shouldn't you benefit? I find it annoying to buy something at full price and then see it on sale a week later thought I've never taken it back to buy the same thing again - though that's not what you have done. I wouldn't worry about it!

WireBrushAndDettolMaam · 28/12/2019 20:58

Yeah you said the wrong thing.

Of course she got huffy because you told her you were exchanging them so she treated it as an exchange (straight swap old for new) and then charged for the new items.

What you should’ve done was asked to return the originals and get credit on a gift card then pay for the replacements with the gift card.

You gave her extra work unnecessarily.

eveshopper · 28/12/2019 20:58

So you were exchanging gifts for a bigger size in order to make a profit?

Babybel90 · 28/12/2019 20:59

No, not in order to make a profit, it just happened that these items were now in the sale.

KMoKMo · 28/12/2019 21:00

I wouldn’t have been happy with a straight swap either.
What store is this? Why did they need to faff about with gift cards?

Fantababy · 28/12/2019 21:01

No, you were right. If you hadn't had gift receipts they'd only have given you the sale value so why shouldn't it work both ways? If it was wrong she'd not have been able to do it.

Babybel90 · 28/12/2019 21:02

It was JoJo, because they were bought by 3 different people they were on 3 gift receipts so apparently they had to go on three different gift cards, which were then used to pay for the additional items then chucked in the bin.

I find it annoying to buy something at full price and then see it on sale a week later

You've possibly misunderstood the basis of sales Grin

KarmaStar · 28/12/2019 22:06

I recently bought something in a one day sale, the price went up the next day to twice the price. If I returned it i would not have expected double the money to be refunded to me.
I would expect what I paid for it.
The shops are there to make a profit.
Imo you were being grabby.yabu.

LittleLongDog · 28/12/2019 22:10

I would have done the same thing.

bonzo77 · 28/12/2019 22:10

Jo Jo have rotten customer service in the stores. I was called a liar for returning something faulty despite having a receipt. Accused me of buying the item ages ago, rather than 2 weeks prior and had somehow got hold of a more recent receipt. Ended up calling head office.

TheSandman · 28/12/2019 22:13

Yes.

Bringmewineandcake · 28/12/2019 22:16

No you were fine. If you'd have been buying the same sizes just to benefit from the reduced price then that would have been cheeky.
What you did was perfectly acceptable.

nancy75 · 28/12/2019 22:23

Not cheeky at all - why would you take the items as full price when they are being sold as sale price to everyone else?
I worked in retail for a very long time, what you did was totally fine, if they want to make it more difficult by faffing about with gift cards then that’s their look out.

Drum2018 · 28/12/2019 22:26

I would have done the same as you.

feeona123 · 28/12/2019 22:28

Totally fine! I would’ve done the same!

Drum2018 · 28/12/2019 22:30

@KarmaStar op got the value of the purchases back as they were on the day they were purchased - just the same as you would have if you returned your item. If the clothes originally cost £50 on the day they were bought, then she had the right to get £50 worth of clothes back when she returned them - which she did. She was just lucky that there was a sale. Nothing grabby about what she did at all.

FruityWidow · 28/12/2019 22:30

Why did you not give the cards back to the friends and family who originally bought the clothes at full price?

christmasathome · 28/12/2019 22:31

Personally i think what you did was cheeky, I can see why you think it was ok but you were exchanging for the same item and that should have been an exchange with no money changing hands. If everyone dud this with gifts bought for Christmas shops would go out of business.

2020BetterBeBetter · 28/12/2019 22:32

I think you should have said in the first place that you wanted to return the items and provided the receipts. Then you wouldn’t have caused wasted time by putting through an exchange on the till only to be voided to put through again.
