Cleaning with bleach - normal?

Another MIL one, sorry.

We're at the PIL's for a few days and MIL insists on cleaning the kitchen with bleach. Not only that, she washes all the dishes in bleach water.

I've just made a sandwich and even that now smells of bleach because of the plate. I'm really sensitive to the smell as I hate it, so I get that I may be being unreasonable.

Yes, I use bleach for cleaning the loo, but not kitchen surfaces or crockery! AIBU?? Does anyone else do this?

Washing dishes and worktops in bleach is really dangerous. It needs to be washed off in a kitchen.

BaronessBomburst · 28/12/2019 11:59

DM always bleached the worktops, but not the crockery.
Actually, that's not strictly true, she did occasionally use Milton.
I don't think it's normal though.

Thehop · 28/12/2019 12:01

It’s fine to do a bleach rinse with but it needs rinsing off.

gamerchick · 28/12/2019 12:01

Bleach doesn't clean, so no. Don't stay there again or take some paper plates. She has issues with germs from the sounds of it.

UncomfortableSilence · 28/12/2019 12:02

YANBU I only use bleach to clean if on the rare occasion someone in the house has D&V, I will put a squirt down the toilet too after cleaning.

Never heard of doing the washing up in bleach water and I am fastidious with cleaning.

Omg
I don't even use bleach for the loos because I'm worried it's so dangerous/toxic
So that literally blows my mind

Ahhhhhhhhh

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 28/12/2019 12:21

I wouldn’t be able to stay in that house! The smell of bleach gives me a headache!

I do have a small bottle of Milton in the house just in case of something like norovirus (which we’ve never actually had in the house) but I don’t use bleach for cleaning generally, it’s highly toxic and unnecessary in a domestic setting (IMO).

Sparklingbrook · 28/12/2019 12:23

Bleurgh. I would hate that. The smell of bleach makes me heave, I never buy it.

BloodyCats · 28/12/2019 12:26

No definitely not normal. I squirt it down the loo every couple of weeks but that’s it.

BaolFan · 28/12/2019 12:29

No, that's bloody bonkers.

I don't use bleach at all because we are on a septic tank. Similar to a PP I have a small bottle of Milton which is kept for emergencies. But I mix the solution up in a bowl and use that - throwing out the remainder into a designated place in the garden because it can't go down the drain.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 28/12/2019 12:32

I've got bleach in the house but only ever use it when needed - Milton sterilising stuff is always great when you've got sickness in the house but aside from that it's not necessary.

I'd guess that eating from plates like that could pose a health risk as bleach can be dangerous stuff.

Muckyboots1 · 28/12/2019 12:32

I've actually just bleached my kitchen and soaked my cutlery in bleach and warm water. It's only because we've had weeks of constant coughs, d&v and every other bug under the sun. We're pretty good at washing hands, so I decided to do a deep clean after taking the decs down in an effort to kill any lurking bugs. Wouldn't do it as a general rule though

Muckyboots1 · 28/12/2019 12:33

And I've rinsed everything well afterwards!

Oldraver · 28/12/2019 12:37

No one (in an average home) needs bleached plates at all

Fishcakey · 28/12/2019 12:41

Bleached plates is just weird. Before I had a dish washer I used to bleach mugs and teaspoons to get the stains off but then I would wash them up again. I do bleach the sink, draining board etc though

I feel ill just reading this Envy
