Help with urine smell

Not really AIBU, but I don’t know where else to post it. My FIL is having problems with urinary continence. He came to stay for Xmas and despite my DH stripping the bed first thing every morning, and is putting down washable rugs around the room, we still can’t get rid of the smell. It stinks, we’ve taken bedding to the cleaners, washed all the rugs etc, bleached the en-suite top to bottom and it still smells. My DH is up there now with a rug doctor doing the carpet, but I’ve been around the room, nose to the carpet and I don’t think it’s coming from the carpet. Please tell me some tips to get rid of a general smell of urine (I.e not from a stain or one specific patch).

Could it be in the actual duvet itself?

Muminabun · 27/12/2019 22:03

Could it be the mattress op ? You may have to get your nose around the room a bit more to work out where it is coming from. Does your fil wear pads they do special men’s ones now.

ScatteredMama82 · 27/12/2019 22:03

@missmouse the duvet is at the launderette, we took it today. The bed is stripped bare and we had a mattress protector on it.

Mix white wine vinegar with water (I do a 50/50 mix) and pop into a spray bottle. Spray all carpets, bedding and furnishings.

You can leave a bowl of white wine vinegar in the corner of the room to absorb smell.

Boil a pan of (you guessed it) white wine vinegar. It neutralises smell throughout the house.

Baking soda / powder is brilliant too. Sparkliest it on the carpets and mattress. Rub in with a dust brush and leave as long as you can, before hoovering.

Amazon do vinegar by the litre and baking soda by the kg. I swear by it when the cat decides to stealth pee somewhere 😳

HanginWithMyGnomies · 27/12/2019 22:07

Sprinkle.. not sparkliest!

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 27/12/2019 22:09

Has some dried on the bed frame?

MiniGuinness · 27/12/2019 22:10

Is FIL still with you?

missmouse101 · 27/12/2019 22:11

Goodness op, I do feel sorry for you!

Spacebowlisback · 27/12/2019 22:12

Can you wait until he’s asleep and wash your FIL?

Spacebowlisback · 27/12/2019 22:14

Sorry! I didn’t actually mean to post that in the end. And my guess would be wall splatter. I take it he’s gone home?

BertieBotts · 27/12/2019 22:15

Sorry this sounds really awful, but they sell sprays in the pet aisle to clean up messes from animals who have toileted in the house. It says something euphemistic on the bottle but it's a biological type cleaner. It has enzymes in it or something.

XmasRibbons · 27/12/2019 22:15

Guessing it is embedded into the mattress, I'd second the vinegar/baking soda advice. And make you you give the room a good air out.

You don't want to just mask the smell you want everything clean ofcourse so avoid any essential oils/smellies.

inwood · 27/12/2019 22:15

If it gets in the floor boards it's almost impossible to get out. Some pet wee spray might be worth a go.

Bubblysqueak · 27/12/2019 22:16

Pets at home do a cleaner that gets rid of the smell of dog wee, would it work on human wee I wonder?

XmasRibbons · 27/12/2019 22:16

Sure*

Hearthside · 27/12/2019 22:19

It will be dried urine somewhere Op .Sounds random but have you got a wardrobe check that has fil taken wet clothing off and put it somewhere .If you can smell it in the room then you have a area of urine that has dried somewhere if not the carpet look behind and under things.Urine will seep anywhere .

ims0rrydarlin · 27/12/2019 22:24

Window cleaner (any brand in the spray bottles) help with the smell and stains. I’ve used it when my nephew had problems. Gets rid of the smell and any stains.

ims0rrydarlin · 27/12/2019 22:24

Even with dried urine the window cleaner has helped.

HisBetterHalf · 27/12/2019 22:31

You mentioned the rug doctor and they are great for removing stains etc but I find they do leave a smell when the carpet is drying. Do you think he could have hidden any urine stained/soaked things anywhere out of embaressment?

BanginChoons · 27/12/2019 22:38

You need this stuff. You can buy it on Amazon.

Those pet sprays sometimes come with a blacklight - you can use that to detect wee that might have got somewhere unexpected.

TooManyPaws · 27/12/2019 22:44

I use white vinegar for any animal accidents; I buy 4 x 5 litres for around £12 on Amazon. Bleach wont help as it's a similar based smell to urine. I use white vinegar in the washing too. Wipe absolutely everything down with vinegar and do the old Shake 'n' Vac with bicarbonate. Use washing soda and lemon juice to clean the en suite rather than bleach.

HerkyBaby · 28/12/2019 14:00

Cat litter will absorb the smell wonderfully.

Cornettoninja · 28/12/2019 14:21

I think a black light is a great suggestion, much better to be able to see where you need to target.

Bicarbonate of soda sprinkled round the room, left overnight and vacuumed up might help but it might miss where the smell is coming from.
