To be absolutely terrified to go on a skiing holiday tomorrow

I am just overweight. Do zero exercise. I'm fairly young enough to be able to chug through being all of the above but dh has booked the ski holiday now and I was apparently required to up the numbers of the ski school beginners group otherwise he'd have had to pay for private lessons so am now part of the group apparently.

At first I thought ok I can do this. But now that it's happening I'm terrified. Lessons start Monday. I went out and got all the gear I think I need today. I don't know why I'm so scared. Maybe I never try new things and am pretty happily set in my ways! Can anyone reassure me? Or maybe tell me I have a justified reason for being scared.
Don't want to tell dh and ruin the holiday. My dc will also be coming and I'm glad they'll get the experience I suppose.

Awww I was desperate to go skiing and forced my OH into booking with friends. I'm a confident person but on the third day of ski school I had this epiphany and thought this isn't for me. I declined to go back- enjoyed lie ins the rest of the holiday and pottering around the resort and the spa.

If you don't enjoy it don't force yourself

GymSloth · 30/12/2019 14:23

Yay! Brilliant update Grin

Didiplanthis · 30/12/2019 14:29

I used to ski alot. My last ski holiday was 11 years ago when I realized the day of departure I was pregnant and had hyperemesis... I managed to ski twice for 30 mins in 10 days, I felt so crap and fragile I binned my decent boots and bought ex rental beginner boots as they softer and comfy for those 2 skis. I spent most of the holiday sitting on the bathroom floor vomiting but can still remember enjoying curling up on the luxury under floor heating between vomits, reading my book by the fire and gentle walks in the village between bouts of puking in glorious crisp air and beautiful scenery. I also did a bit of very easy cross country skiing which is more comfortable and is much easier to take at your own pace your can go as fast or gently as you like. So if I could get some nice memories from that one try not to fear it too much , although I think you are there now - hope it's ok!

Brilliant update!

banivani · 30/12/2019 14:45

My husband is a good skier but for various reasons we never went skiiing as a family until a few years ago. There are day trips where we live. So I've skiied a grand total of six days all in all I think, combining various trips. The thing that's the absolute hardest in the beginning is getting to the lifts, because that thing the skiers so effortlessly do where they just push with one foot and glide on the other? Be prepared for this! Bloody hell. Still can't do it. But it's fun going down. I stay on a kiddie hill and slowly slowly inch my way down. The only danger I'm in is from lunatic children with no control zooming past and barely missing me, but me myself, I'm in control. Grin

We're just back from Christmas in CH. Great snow and warm enough to eat lunch outside. First time skiing in 8 years and thankfully it came back, if with sore shins and tight calfs! Eyewateringly expensive though - £6 for a plate of chips, £4 for a hot drink. Eating out was well over £100 for four, even just mains and drink.

snowpatroller · 30/12/2019 16:37

@ LIZS it is sooooo expensive here in Switzerland I have been here before and my dh worked here and was offered a job here. I wish we hadn't turned it down now!

The instructors are VERY gentle with beginners for the first few lessons. You'll be on the gentle slopes so won't go fast. If you feel out of control, just fall over (towards uphill) - far better than crashing head first into a tree or pole. They get you to go further and steeper as each day passes, so just stop going when you feel it's beyond you. I was morbidly obese when my OH wanted to start skiing - I was worried, but it was all fine, it's not that bad - you usually go up by lift and ski down, so not really very tiring on the nursery/green slopes. I tended to last 3 or 4 days then had the last day or two doing my own thing (on the runs we'd been on earlier in the week) when I thought the group was getting too far beyond me (i.e. steeper slopes, off-piste etc).

ChiaraRimini · 30/12/2019 17:25

OP that's brilliant! So pleased for you. I am not sporty but loved skiing.
I found that a mulled wine or brandy at lunchtime helped me no end, as I was just a little bit more relaxed in the afternoons lol.

snowpatroller · 30/12/2019 18:01

Tbh surprisingly it was the faster skiing that I loved the most. I just seemed to take to it. Was turning stopping etc straight away. Didn't fall over once and just loved it.
I have never taken to a sport ever before. Will how obviously be recommending to everyone Grin

Just give it a go..if you try and it's not for you, there's always the bar...

banivani · 30/12/2019 18:07

You’re a stronger woman than me OP, I’m still trundling slowly down ... I fell over twice when using a transportation lift on flat ground. My husband just looked at me and said how??? and then pulled me up Grin

TeslaGirls · 30/12/2019 18:18

Smow I actually laughed when I saw your update - as a fellow non-confident non-sporty person, I'm so pleased for you Grin Well done!

TeslaGirls · 30/12/2019 18:18

Sorry, Snow

LaurieMarlow · 30/12/2019 18:22

Great update OP.

Skiing depends so much on technique. Physicality alone doesn’t cut it. Sounds like you’re doing great, fair play.

Hefzi · 30/12/2019 18:34

Well done, OP! I had had half a dozen lessons on a dry ski slope before I first went skiing, and still ended up being too bad for the total beginners' group Grin. Two days of private lessons and I returned to the group, but I still spent hours of every day face down in snow with my legs pointing in different directions Grin I was notorious in the resort for having fallen off every single ski lift I ever got on (except the gondola itself) every time, by the end of the week BUT it was worth it for the good bits, which were amazing! (ie the bits where I was upright and pointing the right way)

I did eventually get to the black runs before a snapped ACL meant I gave up - but I was never a natural Grin. Clearly, you are - so have a fabulous time! (And like a PP, I always found that my shins were agony all week long...)

LIZS · 30/12/2019 18:36

Well done you! Tbh I have found it easier weighing more as you get more momentum, at least that is one benefit.

snowpatroller · 30/12/2019 18:39

@LIZS I'm so so sure this is actually what helped me. I didn't want to tell my slim dh that actually my weight was helping me stay in place. He did look better in the photos mind... and salopettes on me well, for that part I won't indulge you in how fabulous I looked. Think elephant in trousers
