To find hair salon wash basins so uncomfortable?!

Like most people I love to have my hair done every 6 weeks or so. The only problem is I find the wash basin so uncomfortable that the back and sides of my neck are sore for about 5 days afterwards! Particularly when I'm having colour and highlights as I'm leaning backwards for so long having it all rinsed off and then washed! I'm just over 5ft tall and I have to stretch so much that my feet are hardly touching the floor! Would a foot rest help? Do other's have this problem or is it just me?! My hairdresser said she hasn't come across this before which I find hard to believe!

I have to have a dry trim because I find those sinks agony, I do have neck problems, but I can’t believe your hairdresser has never had anyone mention it before.

TeaAndStrumpets · 27/12/2019 15:18

My hairdresser has an extra little rubber cushion which she can put on the edge of the basin. It makes a big difference.

Auldspinster · 27/12/2019 15:24

I have a wet cut and the hairdresser just dampens my hair with the water spray.

@Cornettoninja

Thank you for the advice. I'm a bit embarrassed at this stage to go to the hairdressers as 1. I can't do the sink bit, and 2. I have chopped my hair to bits myself, but it's well hidden when I put it up. Oh well, will give the spray bottle a go!

TakeAChanseyOnMe · 27/12/2019 15:39

If they don’t have specific cushions, ask for a couple of towels to sit on.

Explain to your hairdresser that you’re not comfortable - they shouldn’t start washing your hair until you’re comfy.

This is the reason I dont/can't go to hair salons. It hurts my neck and back of head so much, no matter where I go. I can't wait for it to be over. After reading scary stories bout the sinks causing strokes etc I'll never go again. I get my hubby to cut my hair

SirVixofVixHall · 27/12/2019 15:48

I always tell them I am going to stand up and tip my head forwards, as I am prone to neck pain.

Samcro · 27/12/2019 15:50

i now always get a dry cut. my neck would be sore for days.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 27/12/2019 15:59

The backwash at the salon I use is adjustable which makes life easier. They also have cushioned edging to rest on so there’s no hard edge digging into the neck. They also serve a decent coffee, or glass of wine if you prefer. Well worth the money.

CooCooCoo · 27/12/2019 16:03

ive though about asking to stand and lean forwards but I don't know how that would work with rinsing off colour?

Aw god don’t do it! We used to have someone do this in our salon and it was a nightmare, was too difficult to not to soak the woman and so difficult to get product out her hair.

SirVixofVixHall · 27/12/2019 16:06

I have never had any problems, I lean forward over the sink, and hold a wrapped towel over my face. I haven’t had water spray everywhere, or been soaked, and I don’t have a three day headache afterwards.

Butterfly98 · 27/12/2019 16:07

Crikey @IncyWincyGrownUp a glass of wine served! Your salon sounds very upmarket. I'd have to forgo the driving then and get a taxi home as live about 5 miles away from mine!

I wash mine at home. Not all hairdressers like it but I have found one who does.

The basins are uncomfortable at best and dangerous at worse and I won't be risking backache or a stoke.

Kelvingrove · 27/12/2019 16:14

My hairdresser is happy to wash my hair with me leaning forward over the basin. That have always been very nice about it. Sometimes if there is a new trainee they are a bit nervous in case they splash my face but it has never been a problem.

Before I asked for a forward wash I found it really painful for days afterwards so it is worth asking / insisting!

Voila212 · 27/12/2019 16:16

I never heard about the stroke but I hate those sinks. I end up in terrible pain in my neck and head. In fact I find the whole blow drying an ordeal, I now only go in for a dry trim every 2 months.

nononever · 27/12/2019 16:21

I think they are better if you can lie down - both the hair salons I go to have chairs that they can tip up so that you are horizontal (one also has a back massager on the chair)

My salon has too plus the basin is adjustable. But I agree not all salons are the same, I have suffered in the past.

SarahNade · 27/12/2019 16:24

Oh yes, they are horribly painful. But I don't know many people that would want to visit a salon every 6 weeks, let alone afford it. Most people I know dye their hair at home. Cheaper, easier (if you're able to shampoo your own hair, you're able to dye it), and usually the results are better than the over-priced salons. The only time my head ever goes near a salon basin is if I get a perm.
