Family invited themselves to Christmas Eve buffet at our house at 11am as we have more room. (Still only a semi). Explained I was working the Monday and would need to get shopping 1st thing so 12.30 better. Family drop their buffet food off at 11.00 anyway and then go off for walk leaving me and DH to cook food. Expected them back at 12.30 but 1.00 comes and goes. They finally pitch up about 1.30 claiming walk took longer and no real apologies. Turns out walk took longer as they stopped off for a coffee!!! Additional detail is that it took an hour and a half to cook their buffet food. We have Gluten free /vegan diets so couldnt eat their stuff, some of which required complex 'construction'. Once they did sit down they did feck all and were waited on hand and foot whilst their bonkers dog constantly kept jumping up on the table, ruining the table cloth I was hoping to use Christmas day.
I'm not interested in hearing that Christmas is all about giving as I was knackered, recovering from flu and had spent hours tidying the house. They flat out lied about stopping for coffee and let us cook everything. Are they complete at utter CF's or is it my imagination????!!!

Why on earth do you go along with any of this? Genuine question. Especially while recovering from flu. It's like mindless obedience. What was going through your head? How does the thinking go?

BBOA · 26/12/2019 22:03

Sorry didn't explain. Had arranged lunch for 12.30... Food was ready for 12.30. They were late as went for a coffee... But they didn't fess up to that being why they were so late back. Blamed being late on lost family member which was a complete lie 🤥😂

I voted YABU becaise when they went out you should have just left their stuff for them to deal with when they got back, and you should not have 'waited' on them

People only walk over you when you let them

Sweetpea55 · 26/12/2019 22:08

I would have all this deconstructed buffet food for them to sort out when they arrived. And thrown the dog Outside. Couldn't it's owner have wipef it's paws or were you too scared to ask them

FGSJoanWhatsWrongWithYou · 26/12/2019 22:08

The coffee lie was just the icing on the cake. What the frick was going on with them going out for a walk without you in the first place? Why doesn't that bother you?

Sweetpea55 · 26/12/2019 22:09

What Queenofthefae said but she typed it much better than me

zasknbg · 26/12/2019 22:09

Just say NO next year

selmabear · 26/12/2019 22:16

I don't understand how they could have invited themselves. They made the suggestion to use your home as a venue and then you agreed to it. You invited and welcomed them into your home OP. Next time they suggest this put your foot down and say 'no thanks'

paranoidmum2 · 26/12/2019 22:17

Take it in turns, not fair to have to host every time just because yo have a slightly roomier semi! We take turns whether someone has a terrace or detached.

Dizzygirl00 · 26/12/2019 22:19

YABU for shouting at the dog 🤷🏼‍♀️

roisinagusniamh · 26/12/2019 23:18

What a bunch of clowns.
Selfish and then telling silly lies.
Why bother with people like that?

EL8888 · 26/12/2019 23:25

You got done and they are CF’s. I would decline to do anything for or with them for the foreseeable

Wolfiefan · 26/12/2019 23:29

Let them assemble their own food.
(Cold and half eaten as they arrived late.)
Tell them to control the dog or remove it from your house.
Too late now.

Thanks for the responses and recommendations. I have a complex family (far too long to go into here) but I've taken it on board and it definitely won't happen again, I can assure you!
