Hello everybody,
This spring we're moving from Bromley in Kent to central North Norfolk - within a 10 mile radius of Holt, which we love.
However, we really would appreciate some knowledgeable help from you lovely people up there.
Myself 57, just retired and my lovely better half ( no children ) are looking for a three / four bedroomed house in a village close-ish to Holt. Most importantly we wish to live in a genuinely nice, friendly village which hopefully you could recommend and places you wouldn't!
Holt is sadly out of range for our budget but I 'm sure you could suggest other great places ?
Thank you in advance!

Regards, Martin

Sadly the majority of the villages near to Holt have been placed in the same bracket financially. If you look further west, towards Fakenham you may find something to your liking, we're much further way, our house would have been 50K at least dearer had we been 20 miles further North.
Colkirk is a pretty village, just south-east of Fakenham, handy for Holt on the A148.
Sorry if it isn't what you want to hear, Holt is lovely to visit but can be a nightmare.
Good luck.

CarrotBarrot · 26/12/2019 20:29

Are you targeting Holt for any other reasons than liking it?
Reepham is lovely and that much nearer to Norwich too (north Norfolk is great if you don't actually want to go anywhere else).

Didiusfalco · 26/12/2019 20:31

What is your budget?

theweebleshavelanded · 26/12/2019 20:32

castle acre area? gayton? dersingham is nice (not near holt though!). swaffam to fakenham villages?

theweebleshavelanded · 26/12/2019 20:32

why holt in particular?

NigesFakeWalkingStick · 26/12/2019 20:38

What is your budget OP?

lljkk · 26/12/2019 20:40

3 bed terrace in Holt for £130k. So I assume your budget is well below that. What is the budget? Are you looking for a detached bungalow.

I think of Melton Constable & Briston as deepest darkest UKIPville, so can't recommend them.

egunner · 26/12/2019 22:14

Hi everyone,
Our budget is £550,000.
We love Holt because of the genuineness of the town and the people.
The old town attracts us as it almost takes you back to a time when people had respect for their neighbours - unlike so many Londoners where they have lost sight of that.

People in London are probably lore for sly and I’ve lived in both. But they’ll have a steady supply of white people and the daily mail for you Martin. HTH

lljkk · 27/12/2019 05:52

£550k in Holt is a fortune. Confused
Why wouldn't this meet your needs?

OLDquestion · 27/12/2019 07:00

unlike so many Londoners where they have lost sight of that.

Really? How are Londoners disrespectful of their neighbours? I am in zone 2 and see no disrespect around me??

MustardScreams · 27/12/2019 07:13

£550k is Holt is fine! Unless you want something outrageously big.

Holt isn’t idyllic though, it’s like any other town and has its problems. There’s still crime (albeit the more countryside versions rather than stabbings).

I’d also look at Aylsham and Reepham. Both have a similar vibe but you’ll get more for your money.

notsohippychick · 27/12/2019 07:32

Cley next the sea is gorgeous! About 10 minute drive to Holt but probably very expensive. If you are looking for idyllic Cley is pretty much it!

notsohippychick · 27/12/2019 07:35

Have a look at the villages on the main road to Norwich. (Think it’s called Holt Road!). I live in Norwich so not sure about the village vibes but have a visit and see which ones give you a good feel.

Tellmetruth4 · 27/12/2019 08:16

What’s with the strange and jarring anti-London dig? You’re moving from Kent to Norfolk, why are relationships between people in another city of concern and how can you possibly generalise to that extent? Weird.

notsohippychick · 27/12/2019 08:25

North Norfolk has become a haven for second homes, and it’s thought second homes for those in London. Therefore prices have rocketed and I think local people who wish to by around the vicinity are being pushed out. Possibly why places like this are anti Londoners! I don’t speak for myself btw, it’s just the vibe I get!

Tellmetruth4 · 27/12/2019 08:33

The OP isn’t from North Norfolk though, they’re from Kent.

FeigningHorror · 27/12/2019 08:35

Do you want to move to Norfolk or to the 1950s?

elprup · 27/12/2019 08:37

unlike so many Londoners where they have lost sight of that.

I live in London and this isn’t true at all in my experience.

BlouseAndSkirt · 27/12/2019 09:02

Holt is rammed with Boden wearing holiday visitors in the summer and a bit bleak in Feb.

Cley has the main road through it and is a traffic snarl up in the summer and the only village shop will bankrupt you if you use it for your regular shop (fabulous as it is)

Think carefully OP. Heading into retirement you might appreciate somewhere with a village shop , GP surgery, a services like that are often few and far between. And in Holt you are a hour’s drive from the hospital.

Villages can be friendly but in the other hand local people often don’t see people belonging until they have lived their for 30 years....

I love N Norfolk. I was brought up there.

BlouseAndSkirt · 27/12/2019 09:09

P.S and now find London a very community orientated place where the sense of community is really inclusive.

But it is true about crime. My family are relaxed about unlocked doors etc.

But rural and coastal disadvantage is
a real thing and will get worse after Brexit and visitors often don’t notice it until you live amongst it.

Remember you will be miles from a cinema / theatre....The care infrastructure is crumbling.

keepingbees · 27/12/2019 09:23

I love Norfolk but be aware it can be quite insular especially the villages.
There's a lot of people moving there from London and they're not generally well received by the locals for various reasons, so be aware before you think it will be some traditional utopia.
Also look at facilities if you're planning on growing old there, things like your nearest hospital will be Norwich which is a fair trek.

AuntImmortelle · 27/12/2019 12:15

You are moving from London, OP, not Kent - as you well know Bromley has been a London Borough since 1st April 1965 and is no longer in Kent. Just to clear that up!

theweebleshavelanded · 27/12/2019 20:09

mmm as a "local" norfolker, be aware OP londoners are not as welcomed as you may think (apart from your money). as another poster pointed out we re being pushed out to cromer, fakenham as we cant afford to live in the naice parts anymore!!!!!!!

some areas old hunstanton/ burnham market/ wells is known by us as chelsea on sea.......

we`re soooo quaint with our accents . (we have drugs etc same as anywhere else lol)
