We should all boycott Next shops Boxing Day ( well too late for today as I was fast asleep at 6 am)

I just heard a husband on the radio. His wife had to work Christmas eve ( no problem IMO with that) and also had to work today Boxing Day.. She had to be in work for 5.30 a.m. for the 6am Next Boxing Day sale. No public transport and Christmas Day overshadowed with the worry of getting up early enough to get ready and get to work for 5.30am. No choice about whether to work either. Spirit of Ebenezer Scrooge IMO. Very poor Next. 0/10 for caring about your staff!

Agree Boxing Day shopping should
Be banned and the Next sale is ridiculous.

JemSynergy · 26/12/2019 15:29

I never shop on Boxing day, in our house it we have another christmas dinner with family. For us it is another christmas day!

Jinglehellsbells · 26/12/2019 15:38

I think that is appalling that MN had staff on if that is true?
They were on deleting posts etc.

FlamingoAndJohn · 26/12/2019 15:40

I expect the MN staff were working from home.

recklessruby · 26/12/2019 15:40

Completely agree. Dd worked there over Christmas holidays when she was at college. Had to start at 6 am.
She was a teenager so guess who had to get up at 5 to drive her there?
Yes it did overshadow Christmas Day.
When I picked her up the place was madly busy.

hammeringinmyhead · 26/12/2019 15:50

But if you take a lot of online orders (and you will need customer support staff and IT support scheduled on) then you will need to have more staff on the 27th to despatch - possibly more staff than you actually have in total. It’s not that simple.

Again, no, you don't need anyone on Boxing Day. Our call centre is closed until tomorrow, but customers can take a chance and order without help. Our standard delivery is 5-7 days so plenty of time to pick and pack.

Granted, someone in IT will keep an eye on the site from home but in my 13 years it's never broken on Boxing Day.

hammeringinmyhead · 26/12/2019 15:50

Also, couriers don't collect orders on Boxing Day!

Jinglehellsbells · 26/12/2019 16:00

Again, no, you don't need anyone on Boxing Day.
Will vary from company to company I suppose, I was working yesterday for one of the larger online ones (not picking) . Its crazy really to think about but I suppose that's where we're heading/already are a 24/7 economy.

Lazypuppy · 26/12/2019 16:02

Everyone knows Next have their 6am boxing day sale, it can't have been a suprise she would have to work it?

NeedAnExpert · 26/12/2019 16:05

Bollocks would you want an enforced day at work getting up at 4am so you could chose a day leave later in the year. On minimum wage.

You’re right, it’s not a job I would want. But I was responding to a point that seemed to be for all workers, not just retail. 🤷🏻‍♀️

hammeringinmyhead · 26/12/2019 16:05

Yeah, I'm sure plenty of online retailers did have staff in but I'm just making the point that people shopping online isn't necessarily supporting staff working Boxing Day in the same way as buying in a shop.

KnobJockey · 26/12/2019 16:10

@TreeTopTim even if they've changed the methods now to use stock sent in (as I say, it was 10 years ago I worked there), it still is, I believe, next store stock, not stuff made specifucally- as you will know, the stuff made for clearance has a different code/label style, so clearly visible. But we used to get that complaint regularly in our store, when it really wasn't the case! But no-one would ever believe that.

BackInTime · 26/12/2019 16:16

There is nothing in Next that's worth getting up at for 6am on Boxing Day for. How many people actually need any more stuff? They usually drag out the dregs from the last few seasons so it's dodgy Christmas glitter tat mixed with random bikini bottoms. Life is too short for this.

HideYourBabiesAndYourBeadwork · 26/12/2019 16:19

I used to work in retail and have worked (far too) many Boxing Days. And it does suck but in this day and age, with retailers going into administration and a population that’s very diverse with many not celebrating Christmas and Boxing Day/celebrating it in the traditional British way any more it’s not really massively shocking that shops are usually open at least for a little while on Boxing Day.

But opening at 6am on Boxing Day (therefore putting a dampener on the actual day) makes them callous cunts. A 10/11am start would have been fine surely?

beautifulstranger101 · 26/12/2019 16:20

Just got back from shopping in town and took the kids bowling- it was great! So nice to get out of the house after being in all day yesterday.
So many people around too- lots of them looked very relieved to be out of the house too, especially with little kids.
We will do the same next year aswell. Clearly, the demand is there since town was packed with people!

Fishcakey · 26/12/2019 16:23

Gods sake! I worked in the off licence trade for years and thirty years ago I was at work until 10pm on Xmas Eve and back in on Boxing Day morning. Nobody felt sorry for me! What about the bar people and waiting staff and theatre staff?

MrsItsNoworNotatAll1 · 26/12/2019 16:24

HideYourBabiesAndYourBeadwork

That's the thing for me. They're not going stop opening on Boxing day but they could open later and close earlier. For the sake of their staff if nothing else.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 26/12/2019 16:24

Love the irony in the OP’s opening post, complaining about retail staff having to work and then automatically complaining about no public transport. Clearly bus drivers and train drivers are ok. Confused

HoHoHoik · 26/12/2019 16:25

Personally when I worked in retail / hospitality I liked the extra pay I got for workin Boxing Day and Sundays

As far as I'm aware Next don't pay extra for Boxing Day or at least they didn't used to, happy to be corrected on this though if they do now pay extra.

My nearest Next is approx £13 away by taxi. If I worked there and had to taxi to work due to there being no public transport on Boxing Day then it would cost me around £19.50 to get to work and £19.50 to get home again. Pretty much £40. At minimum wage I would need to work nearly five hours just to make back my transport costs. Based on an eight hour shift I'd make a whopping £24 in exchange for losing time with my family, having to limit my Christmas Day, getting up at 4am, and then dealing with entitled arseholes all day.

bigchris · 26/12/2019 16:27

Anyone who shops on Boxing Day is a selfish pig, imo

Do you ever think before you post ?

Some people have had shit Christmases, desperate to get out , partner and families currently pissed up watching football

But great to know that wandering round Debenhams and having a coffee in cafe Nero just to get out the house makes me a selfish pig

bigchris · 26/12/2019 16:29

Theyd tell you all that at interview / application stage at which point you wouldn't apply and leave the job for someone who can do it

If you apply for a job at next and don't know they do a boxing day sale at 6am every year you haven't researched

flirtygirl · 26/12/2019 16:30

This thread is interesting in showing that some people don't care that others have to work on boxing day but they came on to this thread to show their snobbery about next.

Like all shops they have some decent clothes and homewares, like all shops they do some actual good discounts and also bring out items that did not previously sell well. Like all shops they are a mixed bag of quality.
Even high end brands do the same.

So pp should stick to the subject of no it does not need to be open on boxing day and no it does not need to be open at 5.30am. However the other comments about Next are just pure snobbery.

bigchris · 26/12/2019 16:30

That was to @25HoHoHoik

DisorganisedOrganiser · 26/12/2019 16:31

I would also have loved to take the kids out today to do something. Bowling or cinema etc. But it is wrong go create a demand for places to open so I won’t. I wouldn’t go to an off licence either Fishcakey.

bigchris · 26/12/2019 16:31

Agree @flirtygirl
