I'm 18 and going to university to study Adult nursing so would get 5k a year in a bursary.
How do I spend this wisely?
I'm staying at home so I was thinking to spend it on a car however I've passed my theory and need to take a number of driving lessons and also I checked my insurance and it was 2.5k a year and I need to buy a car on top of that.
Would it better to just get a annual bus pass and do something else with my money?

will probably just take the bus as idk about permits in the uni . BUT HOW WOULD YOU ADVISE TO SPEND 5K ANYWAYS?

Hollyhead · 25/12/2019 20:48

Will you have to pay your parents rent etc?

livinlife · 25/12/2019 20:49

@Hollyhead no i dont think so .

Don't spend it. Hospitals are connected by good public transport. You will need a bus pass, books and food. Put some into premium bonds.
At the end of the year see if you have anything left over.

vivacian · 25/12/2019 20:51

Won't you need to pay for books, food, board..?

livinlife · 25/12/2019 20:53

@Thelnebriati yh it is in the city centre however we also have community placements . But yh my family friend did it and she said she took the train because she cant drive after her shift becuase she was too tired

OP posts:
livinlife · 25/12/2019 20:54

@vivacian i was told not to buy books from others who had done midwifery and said everything can be found in the library , im living at home so wouldnt need money for food

OP posts:
vivacian · 25/12/2019 20:58

So you're 18 and you're not contributing anything to the household? Food, non-groceries, bills, board? What about buying clothes, presents, meals out, toiletries?

Thelnebriati · 25/12/2019 20:58

You will need to eat while you are studying, the canteen tends to be very expensive so most people take a packed lunch.
You will still need things like clothes and toiletries, even if your parents put you up for free.

livinlife · 25/12/2019 21:01

@vivacian @thelnebrati im still in sixth form and have no source of income and therefore cannot pay for anything and my parents would never take money off me anyways unless i got a job after i graduate . Theyre just like that its in their culture.

Hospitals are connected by good public transport.

Only some placements will be in hospitals.
My DD is a student nurse, and although lives near a city some placements have been in very rual communities with poor transport links.

vivacian · 25/12/2019 21:07

Ok, this is difficult for me to relate to.

livinlife · 25/12/2019 21:09

@speakout ah yes they are some community placements . Does she have a car?

OP posts:
Di11y · 25/12/2019 21:10

save it for a house deposit or a car when you've graduated and buy lots of gifts etc for your parents

confusednorthner · 25/12/2019 21:11

Surely you will still have living expenses? Clothes, toiletries, going out etc. If your parents don't want to take board then that's up to them but I'd think you'd need to cover even that and transport.

wineandsunshine · 25/12/2019 21:12

I would say save and use for public transport. Buy books etc second hand - enjoy op!

livinlife · 25/12/2019 21:13

@Di11y aww thankyou thats a nice idea .

OP posts:
livinlife · 25/12/2019 21:13

@wineandsunshine with the car and all expernses i would still have £500 to spend on clothes

OP posts:
livinlife · 25/12/2019 21:14

@wineandsunshine Thankyou

livinlife no car yet, will be sitting test in the next month or two.
She lives at home, but quite reliant on lifts.

speakout · 25/12/2019 21:15

Buy books etc second hand

Is that still a thing?

My DD is in second year of nursing degree- hasn't bought a single book.
All resources are online.

travellover · 25/12/2019 21:17

I wouldn't get a car yet, transport links to uni and hospitals are good there's no need! Unless you desperately want one. I'd just put it away tbh honestly you'll love yourself in the future if you save it for a house deposit, put it into an ISA Smile

livinlife · 25/12/2019 21:18

@speakout aah okay thankyou . & yh i wasn't thinking of buying books either as people always say fiirst year students buy books for no reason.

OP posts:
OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 25/12/2019 21:22

Save and see how you go. I agree most books from library and most uni libraries have extensive ebooks too. In any case for nursing much of your research for assignments will be from journals available online through the library.

You will of course have normal living expenses. even if not paying rent you'll have clothes, nights out etc. Normal student stuff.

I actually think a car is a wise investment. Yes most hospitals are well served by public transport but not always at the times you need for shifts. Also, there is no guarantee that you will be allocated your local hospital for placement so you may find yourself travelling long distances. When I trained I definitely could not have accessed placement without a car and nor could I have got to work without a car when I graduated and got a job.

speakout · 25/12/2019 21:22

transport links to uni and hospitals are good

Many placements are not in hospitals. Students have to do a range of placements, many are community based.
My DD has had several placements which are 30 miles from the University in small villages.
