Unable to move because of morning sickness

TypicalMeBreakMyTypicalRules · 25/12/2019 10:10

I have massive food aversion, barely eating anything, can't take my folic acid and the only way I can stop myself from being sick is by lying in bed. The GP has prescribed me metoclopramide but I'm so worried about risks to the baby. Anybody had any experience with this medication or a different one?

Can't change the topic off aibu !

I’ve been there, you poor thing! I actually couldn’t keep the meds down, but I’m sure they are absolutely fine. Bad morning sickness is really rough, so take all the help you can get.

I found there were a few things I could manage - ice lollies and sucking sweets!

X

DonPablo · 25/12/2019 10:20

If its been prescribed, I'd say you ought to try it.

The thing that helped me was having some very plain biscuits next to my bed and before I even moved, just having a slight nibble on on was the key. Getting hungry made it all worse.

Floriday · 25/12/2019 10:26

I was given cyclizine this time last year and it did nothing to help. Doctor then prescribed metoclopromide but after reading about the possible side effects and researching it I decided against taking it. Persevered with the cyclizine and after 4 days it started to have an effect, I don’t know if it took that long for the effects to work as standard or my sickness was improving anyway.

Everydayimhuffling · 25/12/2019 10:28

Try the meds. They are thoroughly tested and safe. They made me really drowsy, but did help through the worst of it. Agree with trying to eat, though I'm throwing up everything myself at the moment including vitamins. Poor DP is stuck doing everything with the big baby because I can't get up at the moment.

Teateaandmoretea · 25/12/2019 10:36

Take the meds I was exactly how you describe in 2nd pregnancy and they made the difference between being able to eat or not. I doubt low blood sugar/ ending up dehydrated is optimal for either you or the baby either.

All this anxiety around everything in pregnancy/ making women feel guilty for anything they do as it may cause harm is just so unhealthy. Your baby won't be affected by this any more than if you drink tea, take paracetamol, have a bath, drink Coke etc etc whatever other things people stress about. Just lay of the booze, fags, hard drugs and the medicine a doctor tells you not to take is my advice Wink

Jay2020 · 25/12/2019 10:45

Pregnancy sickness solidarity. I've been on meds since 6 weeks, still on some now at 21 weeks. Do what you need to do, take meds/figure out a diet that stops you getting dehydrated. I know this sucks, especially over Christmas Flowers

insancerre · 25/12/2019 10:56

I had hg with both of mine and had to take meds both times
Ds is now 30, dd is 23
both fit and healthy from birth
Take the meds, they will help

TypicalMeBreakMyTypicalRules · 25/12/2019 11:02

Thank you for sharing your experiences, esp on Christmas Day. Waiting call back from GP to see if I can try a different medication first.

MamaBearThius · 25/12/2019 11:06

You have nothing but sympathy from me. I've had HG since 4 weeks (now 16). I was taking Cyclizine and Ordansetron max dose which gave me my life back. I've cut down now to just Cyclizine and sometimes only 1 a day of those. Had 4 scans now and the baby is super healthy so far. Feel better soon and Merry Christmas

monkeycat · 25/12/2019 11:08

I had HG during both pregnancies and tried several meds. Ondasatron was the only one that worked for me. Had to have it as an injection initially then managed it orally. Both DCs totally unaffected. Any anti emetic will make you tired as a side effect - they are essentailly sedatives , but it is better than the nausea and vomiting. Best wishes - this too shall pass.

ginandgingers92 · 25/12/2019 11:08

I know it's not ideal, as it's Christmas Day, but call your midwife triage unit at the hospital, sounds like you need a urine test for ketones. They may put you on a drip to help get you back to a good place.
I tried to power through with mine and didn't take any meds, then at 16 weeks was rushed to hospital as I was essentially starving, on a drip for days and finally got some sickness meds, it helped immensely.
Sorry you're feeling like this, it's truly awful 🌷

TheMustressMhor · 25/12/2019 11:09

That's a real shame OP, and you must be feeling grim.

Another vote for taking the metoclopramide. And if it doesn't work, ask for something ese, or a cocktail of things.

Good luck.

OrangeSlices998 · 25/12/2019 11:11

Sending love and solidarity. Metoclopramide is thought to be safe but can cause abnormal muscle movements so is advised as a second line therapy. First line therapy is cyclizine. If you haven’t tried anything else I would definitely go back and speak to the GP especially if you’re feeling worried about metoclopramide. Sending love, I hope you’re okay!

Randomdogbite · 25/12/2019 11:13

My twins are make entirely from ice lollies I was so sick and then got really into milky stuff, the opposite of what you would imagine then could only eat cold food. Is there anything you could possibly manage as mine was a million times worse when hungry.

Teateaandmoretea · 25/12/2019 11:31

I think the issue is everyone's different. I could only eat chipsticks and literally a whiff of anything remotely sugary made me 🤮.

Are you able to drink op? If you can't then that is really serious.

Nat6999 · 25/12/2019 11:53

Could you sip either Peppermint cordial in soda water, make it really cold, lots of ice through a straw or Peppermint tea? I was told that the more dehydrated you get, the more you will feel sick & the best way to get your body to absorb fluids is to have something with sugar in it, flat coke or lemonade will both work as well.

NightOwl27 · 25/12/2019 11:59

Sipping room temperature fennel tea was the only way I could get liquids down. Salted crisps or sweet rice cakes were also good when I didn't feel too queasy as they keep your stomach settled without being overpowering. Have you tried Phenargan? Makes you sleepy but not shown to be harmful in the first trimester.

There is also an app called Nevasic which plays strange plinkly music that is supposed to help against nausea. If all fails, stick in some earphones and lie down in a dark room. It does help to regain the sense of balance in your inner ears if you're feeling dizzy and queasy, and generally distracts you a bit from the suffering.

Lots of luck and hope you feel better soon in the New Year!

liviadrusilla · 25/12/2019 12:00

I took cyclizine and it was a lifesaver. Once it had kicked in and I could eat again I found it important to always have something in my tummy, if I didn’t eat I would feel sick again very quickly. Hoping you feel better soon, it’s so rotten feeling ill all the time!

TypicalMeBreakMyTypicalRules · 25/12/2019 12:00

I'm able to drink diluted Apple juice. I've got an appointment at the hospital this avo because they want to check me out as pp said and sort me out with medication which at this stage is not optional it seems.
Thanks for your msgs, really reassuring. Merry Christmas

Teateaandmoretea · 25/12/2019 12:44

Good news hope you feel better soon.

The best advice on what you should do comes from doctors, keep that in mind and any guilt get rid of. You are ill through no fault of your own and need to follow their advice.

Sorry you are having such a shit Christmas Day Thanks

concernedforthefuture · 25/12/2019 16:46

Been there (twice). First of all, don't worry about the baby. They are parasites and will take EVERYTHING from you. I lost 3st in my first pregnancy (I wasn't overweight to start with either) and gave birth to a healthy 7lb12oz baby. The antisickness drugs they give are safe too. And don't worry about the folic acid: this is most important before you even find out your pregnant.
Now to you. Don't be afraid to go back to your GP and ask to try other meds. If you worry you're getting dehydrated, then seek urgent medical attention. Try sucking ice cubes / ice lollies little and often to remain hydrated.

Sprinklemetinsel · 25/12/2019 16:53

I lived on milk. I loathe milk. For eight months it was about all I could keep down. But my baby was 10lb 5oz, so he was clearly perfectly comfortable!

Purpleartichoke · 25/12/2019 17:06

I’m inclined to say take the meds, but I ended up so bad I was vomiting blood And had to be hospitalized so I have a bit of bias.

TypicalMeBreakMyTypicalRules · 25/12/2019 17:19

I'm not dehydrated and was given a different medication to try. I'll go back if it doesn't. So fingers & toes crossed it helps. Thanks for sharing reassuring stories about healthy babies

ladyshapes82 · 25/12/2019 19:12

So sorry you’re feeling rough, OP. I was exactly the same last Christmas with my second baby. I tried cyclizine and metoclopramide but they made no difference. Ondansetron helped a bit, plus omeprazole to stop me vomiting acid every time I lay down. My little boy was born in July, 10lb 2oz and super-healthy. Please don’t worry about taking the drugs - you really do need them to be able to stay hydrated and eat anything at all. You have my every sympathy.
