To remind you that mince pies are poisonous for dogs?

Just thinking back to this time last year when ddog stole Santa's mince pies and spent Christmas day on a drop at the emergency vet. Xmas Hmm

Unlike chocolate, there's no way of knowing whether your dog can eat raisins safely. Some dogs can eat a whole plate of mince pies (or whatever) and be fine, others could die after 3 or 4 raisins. This is probably old news for most people, but dh wasn't aware last year, and when I started a thread venting about bloody thief ddog, a few posters commented that they hadn't realised.

Merry xmas!

The only thing is that lilies are poisonous to cats, the leaves, stems, stamens and pollen

This is a bad time of year for cats too. If you have a cat please regift your amaryllis and poinsettia- also toxic to cats.

pigs I'm not sure it'd ever be possible to teach a dog that harmful foods aren't permitted Grin After many such incidents, our dog has only managed to arrive at the understanding that one doesn't steal certain foods when humans are looking.

Jesus No, I wasn't being completely serious. Pretty impossible, I imagine, to teach a dog that a food was bad for it; if only! It would save a lot of people a lot of money at the vets if you could.

It's was more a case of why would anyone provide something for a dog that is so much akin to something that is bad for them. We don't want our dogs to eat chocolate, obviously, so why provide them with a chocolate substitute, that I assume tastes like chocolate.

There are a lot of better things to give dogs as treats.

My dog love carrot as a treat or fresh chicken, it would just never occur to me to give her something that tasted like chocolate.

WHATTTTT!!! I did not know this.

I shared a piece ofchristmas cake with my 2 days the other day Xmas Sad

They are fine though but thank you as I will know this for next year.

HoppingPavlova · 26/12/2019 09:08

Yes, I've never understood why dogs need stuff that looks like chocolate..........Surely it's better to let them think that anything resembling something that could seriously harm them is not for them.

I really don’t think dogs have that higher order thinking you are assuming they do or they wouldn’t eat a lot of stuff they do. Casting my mind back 50 years now but all the dogs absolutely loved those fake dog chocs, very excited whenever you got them out (and gave the dog 1 while eating 10 yourself). Not surprisingly, a carrot never elicited the same excitement.

@HoppingPavlova If you read my pp you''ll see that I wasn't actually being serious when I said that.

My dog love carrots, for her they seem to be very exciting.

One of my mother's dogs was passionate about beetroot which she had cooked in vinegar. He would sit begging for the rinds.

I knew about raisins and chocolates but had no idea about macadamia nuts until this week.
Not that I can afford to feed my pets expensive nuts.
But that's one I hadn't heard until dp couldn't remember which nuts she'd read were poisonous and I scoffed at the idea of nuts being bad at all. So we looked it up.

Likethebattle · 26/12/2019 14:35

I never knew chocolate was toxic until the last ten years or so. My dog was regularly given human chocolate with no issue. In fact she was chocolate daft. My mum came down one year to three destroyed Christmas presents. The dog had sniffed out the wrapped boxes of chocolate and eaten them all, she was fine and we had no idea she had probably harmed herself.

HollysBush · 26/12/2019 14:43

Macadamia nuts are bad for dogs now?? You learn something everyday.

pigsDOfly · 26/12/2019 15:09

Also things like avocados, anything from the onion family, grapes of course, can't remember anything else off the top of my head.

If you google it you can find a list of things that can harm pets.
