Of the side effects.

Sorry, posting for traffic. Who has taken doxycycline before and NOT had bad side effects? I’ve just popped two for a sinus infection and have now read hundreds of accounts of awful side effects online. Have felt so ill for a week and was hoping to feel better for Christmas Day - now worried I’m going to feel worse 😳

I have these on my repeat prescription as I get so many chest infections, I have felt fine, but you do have to drink a glass of water when you take them. No side effects.

LemonySippet · 24/12/2019 15:45

I took a course of doxycycline once and thought I was going to die, I couldn't move from a horizontal position as the nausea was horrific. My DH on the other hand has a course about every other week every time he coughs in the general vicinity of a doctor as he's immunocompromised. He is on anti-sickness as well but has not experienced any side effects from them and has probably had 10+ courses now.

Lolalovesmarmite · 24/12/2019 15:54

I took it as an anti malarial for quite a prolonged period. I had to stay out of the sun but apart from that I had no issues at all. As a helpful side effect it also got rid of the enormous spots I used to get on my face every few weeks.

ArranUpsideDown · 24/12/2019 16:15

By and large people rarely post reviews about taking medication that was uneventful and side-effect free.

I hope that they work for you in a timely manner and that you don't experience any difficulties.

Afternooninthepark · 24/12/2019 16:34

I took those a couple of years ago after I got a chest infection from the flu. I normally hate taking meds as I have IBS and my guts react badly to things like antibiotics but I was fine. Hope you feel better for the big day.

Junie70 · 24/12/2019 16:34

I'm always fine on them as long as I drink loads.

Don't take an hour before bed either, I had terrible oesophagitis after doing that and was in agony for 4 days! It burned all the way down and I literally couldn't eat or drink, it was so bad.

AFistfulofDolores1 · 24/12/2019 16:39

I've taken it quite a few times - as a malaria prophylaxis. No side-effects whatsoever.

AFistfulofDolores1 · 24/12/2019 16:40

Yes, @Lolalovesmarmite - it cleared up my skin too!

NCasIknowMNetters · 24/12/2019 17:02

I took it for a non-existent sinus infection (long story, I also got 'diagnosed' with asthma which I don't have, but not the allergy that I do) and didn't have half the side effects I'd have had from penicillin-based meds, or erythromycin.

Side effects are very individual, but take the whole dose, or speak to your GP before stopping them if you do have any severe side effects. The side effects of not taking a whole course (your infection continuing AND the bacteria getting immune to it) is worth a call and a few minor, short-lasting side effects.

kateandme · 24/12/2019 17:19

remember they are ridding shit from your body.and so they clear out some of the good gut bacteria which is why it can make you sicky and poo somthing awful.
and also people wont post online when they work will they, pople like on here will only post when something is wrong or affecting them wrongly or making them ill.

Zoidbergonthehalfshell · 24/12/2019 17:32

Oh, this is timely - I've just started a course of these this afternoon for a chest infection! I read the bumf and took the first one with a big glass of water. That was about 90 minutes ago - no problems as of yet! And I'd like to get rid of this cough and wheeze once and for all, so unless they do something awful to me I'll keep plugging on.

The information about not laying down is useful - thanks!

Randomactofkindness · 24/12/2019 18:36

Pharmacist here - you should be fine Xmas Smile

FartnissEverbeans · 24/12/2019 18:40

I took them as an anti malarial for about a month with absolutely no side effects. Same with my husband. I didn’t even think to google it beforehand!

Randomname85 · 24/12/2019 18:48

Thanks Mumsnet! Have a wonderful Crimble. No adverse side effects as yet and I actually feel miles better (placebo I imagine as too early to work!) - in general I have a bit of an iron stomach so rarely get side effects for anything but read awful horror stories about panic attacks, burning stomachs and difficulty breathing so I panicked Confused

Old thread but how much should I take and for how long? Can’t get to a dentist and have 100s of these from child’s acne years ago. Very far back upper tooth infection- on the gum throbbing

You shouldn't, its generally not a good idea to take meds that aren't prescribed to you. On a side note as you say years ago im assuming that they'd be expired anyway
Etinox · 07/08/2021 08:28

Thank you @Disorganiseddad! An hour after posting as it was getting more painful I called 111. A couple of calls to be triaged and assessed and I started a 7 day course of amoxicillin by early evening. Slept soundly on the other side so 🤞 I’m on the mend.

NHS is amazing!
