AIBU?

To ask how to clean silver cutlery with contents of my house?

Can’t get to the shops for cleaner, the internet will have me doing all sorts of science experiments.
How do I clean the black stuff off my solid silver cutlery or is it safe to use if I wash it??

This way! Basically hot water, bicarb and foil. Works brilliantly.

Ketchup?

Yes to the bicarbonate method mentioned above.

Both the hot water, foil and bicarb or rubbing ketchup on it work.

Toothpaste works well too. Might be a bit more time consuming though.

Bicarb is good but if it's really bad soaking in vinegar or boiling with rhubarb 1st will make it easier

Might be too abrasive, especially on silver plate which is presumably what the cutlery is.

Pop it all in a vat of full fat coke.

Lemon juice works on brass. Unsure about silver.

Persil powder or similar, will clean it in seconds, just rub some on and rinse, its instant

Quick Google says lemon juice is fine. Mix 1 part lemon juice with 2 parts water and leave to soak.

However not cleaning at all would be fine, it's only tarnish so it's morr appearance than anything.

Bicarb, foil and boiling water, as above. But do not drop the solution on wooden worktops, as it stains them something shocking! 🙈

I tried ketchup and toothpaste but the tarnishing returns much faster than with Silvo - loves not getting black hands though! I’ll try The bicarbonate of soda method next, but suspect that won’t stay untarnished as long either.

The bicarb and silver foil method is brilliant. It is very satisfying to see the silver become bright and shiny.

Any kind of soda works - I use soda crystals that you get for the drain. V satisfying.

Oo, I do clean the baking trays with biological washing powder, works beautifully! Not sure if I have bicarbonate in, fingers crossed.

It's magical. You know it is working when it gives off that sulphur like smell.
