To buy a new buggy for travelling?

Going on holiday soon and have a one year old. Currently using a Maclaren buggy but it's quite bulky - not sure whether to buy a small one which we can take in the plane with us, but being at Christmas-time I have a tight budget! Please could anyone recommend a buggy which would fold small enough to take as hand luggage on a flight? Thanks

most Airlines include a luggage allowance for under 2s of two items (car seat/pushchair/travel cot etc) and you can take the pushchair to the gate and they’ll put it in the hold. We have a joie nitro but it’s umbrella fold and not super light (although lighter than our everyday pushchair), mothercare have some super lightweight ones at the moment with significant reductions, although they are still quite expensive

Do you really want to know if your are BU or just want a buggy recommendation. YANBU. I bought a buggy for traveling, a peg perego Pliko mini, but I did not use it on a plane and do not know if it is small enough.

A bit of both, flyingfish - aibu in the sense that is it an unnecessary purchase when I already have a fold-up buggy, was just wondering if I'd be better buying a smaller, cheaper one for the purpose of travelling! Would make life easier in terms of the flight and fitting everything in the hire-car (got travel cot and other luggage to consider) 🤔
Thanks for your replies! I'll have a look.

An umbrella stroller takes up the least room really. You'd be best to buy a cheap second hand stroller. They can get badly damaged by luggage handlers (I've seen a few broken following flights).

If you actually HAVE to take it as hand luggage, GB pocket stroller, babyzen yo-yo and mamas and papas acro are the only ones I believe that fit the weight AND dimension requirements

Thanks so much pumpandthunp - mamas and papas have a sale on and the acro is reduced so I think I'll go for that one. Thanks again 😊

No help but threads like this always remind me of that poor OP who posted about a holiday buggy and then answered her own thread 3 years later without realising she was the original OP.GrinGrinGrin

They really don't Hmm there bulky cumbersome and long! Never understood the umbrella stroller hype on MN when most people IRL consider them outdated and troublesome.
OP you could probably pick up a cheapy travel one on Facebook or eBay like a Joie Pact or a GB Pockit i think a few new ones have been brought out this year too if you'd rather buy one new. Best posting this on the pushchair board for someone to recommend some

The best place to look is in your local charity shops. The ones that do lots of children's things will have some really cheap umbrella buggies. There is no point buying new for a holiday on an aeroplane.

We have a babylo scat. Think it fits plane carry on luggage but even if it doesn’t it folds into a tiny size which is great for the boot and can be easily lifted with one hand.

Baby zen yoyo is the perfect travel buggy as it definitely meets hand luggage measurements for planes. It was the first to do so although there may be others now. It is also very light and folds up easily. However it isn't cheap at all so not a budget buy. We have had a lot of use out of ours though.

MindyStClaire · 24/12/2019 08:52

We have a babyjogger city tour that folds to cabin baggage size (never actually flown with it, we use it for nursery).

However, to get it so small and light, it loses things like an adjustable handlebar. So the bar is very low and very narrow, and 6'2" DH finds it very uncomfortable to push for more than a few minutes. Plus the basket is very small, seat not that comfy for DD etc.

So even if you got one that worked for the travel bit, you may not find it that practical to use when you're away.

I got a new pushchair for going on holiday and it's now my pride and joy. I originally wanted a cheap secondhand one that folds easy but ended up getting a new ex display off eBay at a good price. Definitely consider where you're travelling - we were going places in Italy that are not really stroller friendly so w picked one that was easy to manoeuvre with wider wheels and it was the best decision.

Just be aware they can get thrown around on the plane so I would get a buggy travel bag to protect it.

I ummed and ahhed about getting a yo-yo. Ended up getting one after an airline broke a cheaper, umbrella style buggy. I have no regrets, it's a great buggy and I use it most of the time (in preference to our other buggy). Easy to manoeuvre and fold away, comfortable, and super practicable design.

Foldinthecheese · 24/12/2019 09:46

I bought the Acro recently to free up some space in the boot. I’m really happy with it, although I haven’t taken it on a plane yet. Just be aware that the basket is very small, so have other storage options available.

inforapennyinforapug · 24/12/2019 09:54

I’ve got a Joie pact and it is amazing! Folds to the size of a suitcase in one swift one-handed movement and fits in the overhead locker no problem.

mollypuss1 · 24/12/2019 09:56

I used a Mothercare XSS stroller and would put it in the overhead on flights, it folds tiny and comes with a carry bag. Not sure if you can still get them now though. If you want cheap and cheerful then you can pick up a Flykids travel buggy for about £80 and it fits in the overhead aswell.
