Dh & I have joint accounts with Santander.
I've got no reason to think he's up to anything but a Past abusive relationship sometimes makes me anxious.

Last night I went to tescos for Christmas shopping. I left at 11.30 and I wasn't back until about 1am.

Just now I had lost my phone downstairs in our house. I could see Dhs and shouted up to him if it was ok if I could use it to ring myself to find mine. He said yes so I unlocked it and it had been on his txts screen. The top few caught my eye immediately before I shut the screen down as I'm the more financially savvy one of the two of us. From what I could see there were messages from while I was out last night.
One from Lloyd's "thank you for registering for online banking" and one from skrill with an activation code which I've googled and that's a money transfer site.
He hasn't mentioned anything to me and I was with him last night and all day today. He's planning to leave me isn't he?

If he was planning to leave you, I can’t see how Skrill fits in with that?

thepeopleversuswork · 23/12/2019 21:58

That's a pretty big jump to make. There are a myriad other reasons why he could be doing this. Skrill is a money transfer site, right? are there other reasons he could be transferring money?

Milsplus3 · 23/12/2019 22:01

Online banking is fairly common now? Maybe he’s just signing up as it’s easier to keep an eye on finances without logging into the website or going to a cash point. Recommended by a friend?
Work related?
He knew you were using his phone so just outright ask him what it’s for don’t let it hang over you and ruin your Christmas.

nutcrackered · 23/12/2019 22:01

No other reasons for him to be using skrill although I'm not really sure what people use it for.

We're very open about money as we're quite tight at the moment.

@Milsplus3 I understand that. But why would he be registering for online banking with Lloyd's when we only bank with Santander?
It looks as if he's opened a secret bank account in the middle of the night while I was out

Does he have a sole account with Lloyd's or just your joint account with Santander? Stroll could be transferring money to colleagues for random reasons surely so that might be a red herring...

QueenofPain · 23/12/2019 22:04

Milsplus

Their joint accounts are with Santander. OP is concerned because she saw online banking details for Lloyds.

QueenofPain · 23/12/2019 22:06

Does he have form for gambling OP? That’s what I’ve always known it used for.

Could he have opened the Lloyds account to store money he’s made from gambling online and he’s using Skrill to transfer from abroad into it?

nutcrackered · 23/12/2019 22:06

For reference we only bank with Santander. He closed down his sole accounts last year and we put everything in one pot. I was there when he did it. I did the same too.
He knows I would have no issue with him opening another so the timing of him doing it and not mentioning it is very strange.

Ask him straight out to his face. You will be able to gauge whether he is lying and if he is thinking of an excuse on the spot

windycuntryside · 23/12/2019 22:10

Ask

SpockPaperScissorsLizardRock · 23/12/2019 22:16

A lot of banks and money transfer sites offer free money for signing up. I've joined a few just for the cash with no intention of using them. It's easy money.

WaggleWiggle · 23/12/2019 22:20

Tell him Lloyd’s called your landline as part of a security check and you are baffled / worried it’s a scam. Give him a chance to explain if it’s innocent. Incidentally, could it possibly have been a phishing / spam message that he genuinely has nothing to do with?

BustedDreams · 23/12/2019 22:23

I’m not intending to be goady but why not just ask him? If you’re so honest/open about financial matters it shouldn’t be a problem 🤷‍♀️

nutcrackered · 23/12/2019 22:23

I've asked him (which I felt mean doing because I didn't want him to feel questioned if he wasn't doing anything wrong). I believe his reasoning it seems coincidental

OP posts:
coconutty101 · 23/12/2019 22:31

What was his reasoning?

nutcrackered · 23/12/2019 22:35

@coconutty101 his reasoning was that the game he plays on his PlayStation he had found out you can buy and sell players on your team, so he downloaded skrill to do that.
He says he checked if his Lloyd's acc was still open which one of them was and did it through that so there was no risk to ours if it was dodgy.

I'm confident by the way he answered the questions that he was telling the truth. He's not usually that calm when he's lying.

OneFootintheRave · 23/12/2019 22:53

I would still ask him straight out about gambling. Skrill indeed is a popular payment method for online gambling.
