A&E for heart cramps?

Hi. I have weird cramps in my heart. Like tightening twinges etc. Been going on for about an hour on and off and some are more painful than others. Should I be worried or no?

Definitely call 111. I had started with similar pain on a Saturday but not wanting to bother a&e or ooh gp I waited til the Tuesday when I could see the GP who admonished me for waiting so long and sent me off to a&e with a letter saying I potentially had a pulmonary embolism! I was all well and good but the shock and despair on the gp's face.. I would definitely call 111 at the very least if not go straight to a&e

A and e

shakeituntilyoumakeit · 23/12/2019 20:07

Go to a and e it will be a matter of minutes for you to be triaged and then you’re in the right place x

Seeingadistance · 23/12/2019 20:08

A&E. That’s what 111 will tell you to do.

Keepmewarm · 23/12/2019 20:09

Go to a and e. Hopefully it’s nothing but you won’t know until you are seen.

There's a list of symptoms that you should go straight to A&E with.
With some problems if you wait and see you can end up with a serious or untreatable condition, whereas if you'd gone in sooner you could have got help.
Going in with a symptom that appeared serious but turns out to be something else is not time wasting.

When to go to A&E

  • loss of consciousness
  • acute confused state and fits that are not stopping
  • chest pain
  • breathing difficulties
  • severe bleeding that cannot be stopped
  • severe allergic reactions
  • severe burns or scalds
  • stroke
  • major trauma such as a road traffic accident

Sounds like pericardiotis (sp?). But no one can safely diagnose you via web page. Need a physical examination.

Wishforsnow · 23/12/2019 20:34

Go to A&E that would be the advice for any man with chest pain. 111 will say A&E or potentially they will send an ambulance

Winterwoollies · 24/12/2019 00:29

Please go to A&E. Chest pain is never a waste of their time. Truly, no one will make you feel that way. I’m speaking as someone who very nearly lost a (Young) loved one to a cardiac arrest after they ignored chest pains. Please go. It’ll so likely be nothing sinister but you’ll be cared for and seen quickly. Good luck x

If 111 tell you they will send an ambulance to check you out at home they are lying and are contributing to the crippling of our emergency service.. Either be a grown up and realise whether you feel very unwell/something is grossly wrong and you need emergency help-then if so consider whether you can get a lift to hospital quickly or whether you cannot and need an ambulance to get you there. NHS choices website give good advice about symptoms and appropriate action if it's something you're not sure whether to bother a gp or pharmacist about.

If you have chest pains with no obvious cause (I,e. I've had a football kicked at my chest and never since it's a bit sore) then 111/999/paramedic on scene can only recommend you goto a&e to have a blood test which can rule out it's your heart causing it, no matter how unlikely that is. I work as a paramedic and its extremely routine to goto young/low risk 111 patients with chest pain ?cause. We cannot do the blood test that would rule out your heart so generally all that happens is you delay your arrival in hospital by 1-2 hours by waiting for the ambulance to take you.

Sorry if I'm ranting. It's a very frustrating job on ambulance service as we are so busy attending to the worried well the service is crippled. Genuinely if I realised that I was likely having a heart attack or my child was septic I would not call for an ambulance i would call uber as I would arrive at a&e and be triage before the ambulance crew had started their paperwork.
