Poorly child advice...

NannaNoodleman · 23/12/2019 14:44

Shamelessly posting for traffic...

... and I know about internet strangers and medical advice.

DS (4 years) has been a bit off colour since Wednesday. Generally run down, a bit lethargic, a bit tearful, slight temperature, no appetite, has complained intermittently of stomach pain but no areas are painful when touched.

Yesterday and today he's become increasingly irritable and crying and tired. He was sick once last night and once this morning.

He has a GP appointment at 5:30.

He's been crying on & off for over an hour. He says he's not in pain but he's really acting strange.

What are my options? What would you do?

Go to the gp at 5.30. You wouldn't be seen any earlier at a and e anyway, and hopefully they can reassure you.

WorraLiberty · 23/12/2019 14:49

Wait the 2 and a half hours and see the GP

Celebelly · 23/12/2019 14:50

I'd just wait to see the GP. If he's been sick then he could just be feeling nauseous or run-down and tired and that's making him cry. You've already got an appointment with the doctor so unless he goes dramatically downhill in some way, I'd just stick with that. Your only other options are A&E, which I don't think is necessary, or 111, which is unlikely to give you anything that seeing the GP won't anyway.

BikeRunSki · 23/12/2019 14:51

Hang on until 5.30. Get him to sip water to stop him becoming dehydrated.

DonPablo · 23/12/2019 14:51

Try a warm hot water bottle. Will anything distract him? Pillow and duvet on the sofa and a movie on?

Plenty of fluids and cuddles till you see the Dr.

Hooe he's better soon.

Eekdatingisntfun · 23/12/2019 14:52

Oh bless him 😢 I’d probably wait for the gp appointment and go from there. It’s likely something as simple as a stomach bug..,I know that even now I spend most of my time crying/upset when I’m not feeling well. I hope he feels better for Christmas xxxx

TheFairyCaravan · 23/12/2019 14:52

If he was mine I'd give him some Calpol, put something nice on the telly for him then take him to the doctor at 5.30.

justdoityourself · 23/12/2019 15:01

My DS used to brew a tummy bug for a couple of days before starting with the D&V, he would have a mild fever and tummy ache. Sounds similar. Just make sure he drinks little and often and see what the GP says. Hope he's better soon!

Kaykay066 · 23/12/2019 15:09

I’m a nurse and have 4 kids
If he was mine
I’d give sugary juice 5ml/5min checking they’re passing urine/not dehydrated if vomiting/diarrhoea
Give meds for pain does it take the pain away/can they be distracted enough to settle in between doses
If I was worried at all I’d seek help - he sounds unwell but no one without seeing a child can diagnose or give advice really and it’s not great to do so.
I’ve seen many a child on paper they sound unwell but when I’ve laid eyes on them they look horrendous so nothing replaces physically seeing a child and getting a full history/background and observations by someone qualified to do so. I hope you are seen soon and your son is on the mend really soon especially before Santa comes

itgetshardereveryday · 23/12/2019 15:09

Could be a tummy bug or maybe appendix?
I'd wait to see the GP in a couple of hours anyway.
Give him some Calpol, a drink of water and a cuddle on the couch.

My 3yo has a stinking cold which he's passed onto me and both of us have slightly dodgy tummies too Sad Just in time for Christmas.

WineThanks solidarity

Fucksake... suspected appendicitis!

OP posts:
Icanflyhigh · 23/12/2019 21:22

Oh no OP, hope he's ok - what a worry for you, but I still doubt you'd have been seem any earlier at A&E.

Have a hug, try not to worry x

NannaNoodleman · 23/12/2019 21:39

No, we were probably seen quicker waiting for the GP than if we'd rushed off to A&E.

HuntingtonHaven18 · 23/12/2019 21:39

Bless you op

It is a horrible thing when children are ill. My son had appendicitis two months ago. Similar symptoms. He had laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery and was home the next day - was back to normal within two weeks. Hopefully your son will recover quickly too.

X

Hope he is okay. Flowers

Skidzer · 23/12/2019 21:42

Hope he's better soon. But unless you're a doctor, I wouldn't be trying to examine your child.....

TwoOddSocks · 23/12/2019 21:44

Fucksake... suspected appendicitis!

Oh no, that was going to be my worst case guess. Hope it's all OK OP, Let us know how it goes!

NannaNoodleman · 23/12/2019 22:08

Oh I truly hope he's out in 24 hours!! He's got antibiotics on an IV so I'd resigned to being in over Christmas.

OP posts:
likeafishneedsabike · 23/12/2019 22:13

Poor thing. I hope you all get well looked after Flowers

Skidzer · 23/12/2019 22:45

Have you met a surgeon yet?
