To not go camping?

We live in Australia. Every summer after Christmas, DH and our friends like to go camping. I don't.

I've done it a few times now....camping here is very rough...at least the way they do it is.

They prefer a pretty remote spot...it IS beautiful, breathtakingly so...wild, deserted beaches etc...no shop for miles. You have no mobile signal there.

I hate it. I like the views and the wildlife obviously but not the lack of good coffee, internet and beds.

I'm 47....I have a bad back after every trip. By day two I'm often going a bit mad from the nature-ness of it all.

DD1 hates it also...she's 15...DD2 is 11 and still enjoys it.

DH has said he doesn't mind at all if DD1 and I don't come this year. He's happy for us to stay home and bond....DD2 doesn't care...as long as her best friend goes too which she is, she'll have her Dad....

AIBU though? Is it miserable and wimpy of me?

I'm English and haven't ever got used to the roughness of the camping experience here. No loos...no shops...no PEOPLE!

There is no way I would've gone in the first place. YANBU.

UtuNorantiPralatongsThirdEye · 23/12/2019 00:22

YANBU, why do something you hate?

youngestisapsycho · 23/12/2019 00:24

I wouldn’t do it. Your husband doesn’t seem bothered so just stay at home.

nakedelfscientistOfThigh · 23/12/2019 00:24

Stay at home darling. Do not fret. Chill and bond.

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 23/12/2019 00:26

I voted yabu but I meant that you would be unreasonable to go

Pardonwhat · 23/12/2019 00:27

No way in hell would anyone ever get me camping so for that reason alone I’d say YANBU.

littleducks · 23/12/2019 00:28

Wow Christmas camping sounds great. But you clearly don't like it have given it a chance and your dd isnt keen so skip it this year.

CuntyMcBollocks · 23/12/2019 00:28

It doesn't make you miserable or wimpy if you don't enjoy it. I can imagine that camping in Australia is very different than camping in England, and I love camping. Stay at home if you want to.

I'm not sure what being English has to do with it. I am too but love exploring and the lack of loos, shops, or people doesn't bother me at all.

I'm not too keen on the flies though!

aroundtheworldyet · 23/12/2019 00:32

I mean it’s a bit of a ridiculous question really isn’t. Your whole family is happy with the new arrangement. No One cares.
Why do you think the that your need to ask us.

PhoneLock · 23/12/2019 00:33

I am to

FruityWidow · 23/12/2019 00:37

Yanbu. I'd love it but you clearly don't, so don't go.

PhoneLock · 23/12/2019 00:38

Can't you take a coffee percolator with you?

You could try and up the comfort level by using a camper trailer rather than pure camping. That way you would get a decent bed, kitchen and a shower.

managedmis · 23/12/2019 00:40

Are there spiders and snakes etc? I camped in Australia and you couldn't even swim because of the crocs, sharks and jelly fish 🤔

MyKingdomForBrie · 23/12/2019 00:42

Doesn't matter in the least what you do and do not like, or why. You're upsetting no one and in fact you'll make dd1 very happy, so simply do not go. Don't be ashamed of your own preferences!

DramaAlpaca · 23/12/2019 00:44

Good grief no, I couldn't bear that. I can't stand the thought of camping. No showers! Just no. Stay behind and enjoy your home comforts. I would.

NotYourHun · 23/12/2019 00:45

Sounds amazing but if it’s not for you, it’s not for you! No point in going and hating it and being miserable.

NannySusan · 23/12/2019 00:51

I wild camped in Australia, staying in "campsites" in national parks that looked exactly like the rest of the place as there were no facilities 😂
Beautiful and undisturbed and there were some places you could swim.
I wouldn't do it again, I'm too old to dig a hole before I go to the toilet anymore.
Stay home and bond with DD1. Maybe go to a gig together or something? In air conditioning obviously 😉

PhoneLock · 23/12/2019 00:56

Upsetting no-one?

What about her husband and DD2?

eaglejulesk · 23/12/2019 00:58

I like the sound of it, but as you don't and the rest of the family is happy for you to do what you want then don't go. No point in making yourself unhappy, you and DD1 can have a lovely time at home. It's not as if you haven't given it a go.

MyKingdomForBrie · 23/12/2019 01:02

@PhoneLock read the OP love

Josephinebettany · 23/12/2019 01:04

@PhoneLock yes upsetting moone. Her husband and dd2 have already said they don't mind

Josephinebettany · 23/12/2019 01:04

Noone

PhoneLock · 23/12/2019 01:06

@PhoneLock read the OP love

Ah! I was so blinded by my love of remote camping that I didn't see that.

BackforGood · 23/12/2019 01:08

The only thing unreasonable here is the fact you have gone for so long.

DH likes camping. I don't. He took the dc - one at a time at first, and then in various combinations. We're both happy. I don't have to go. He gets to go. dc get to go. Everyone was happy.
I have 3 now adult dc all of whom enjoy camping. I still don't go. Tis lovely.
